They exist to lie to people and confused them with rewritten verses of the bible thats from men Not God. Pay??? to devote your life to God? come on! smh crooks and liars
I love how Mr. Butcher is so romantically sciency!!! *swoon* "You have mercury in your veins, not blood and I would love to fall and rise with you..." :-)
Nunneries throughout history were frequently places for the daughters of the wealthy who for whatever reason would not or could not marry. They might take vows of poverty, but it was a relative and sometimes superficial poverty to the finery they would have otherwise worn. The money was often used to decorate the church instead. And it was usually not an uncomfortable life, the way the vows suggest. Depends on the order, of course.
Ladies like Mrs Brasendale, who want to steal others babies away freak me out.
I know it must be hard when you're so desperate for one and can't have one, but the way she keeps stroking the babies head and greedily staring at it is reli disconcerting.
Oh, Ruby... come on! This guy says he wants you to be exactly who you are, but imagine life with a man who is an atheist communist willing to go to Petrograd! to start a new life. Yikes! What a miserable existence she'll have there! And just let her try speaking her mind in a communist country!
Why is it a 'crock'? Because you don't know the tradition? Because it's not something you know anything about? Convents, monasteries, seminaries - these are not homeless shelters. Traditionally, the family helps with a 'dowry' when a woman enters a convent, just as the family helps out financially when a child marries. It's a similar tradition. I know priests and religious (some in my own family) who recieve financial help from us. Who are you to judge that?

I forgot that in order to be a nun you must pay a fee. Convent and College are pretty much the same category

is anyone disturbed by the fact that Ruby and the Austrian always kiss in the storage room with the pork?

lol yeah, I think they're so sweet together, but it is odd (albeit funny) that they keep kissing in the cold room surrounded by pork

It's the only private place they have to go if she's going to see him in his shop. Not very romantic, though!

What a crock - expecting Iris to pay her way into the order.
