One of the great instrumentals of the 60s! And playing it on a vinyl through a vintage compact stereo is genius! I had an RCA much like that one, but bought it in 1966 or '67.
When I was 13 (13!) I used to play this over and over. My sister thot I was so odd that I loved this tune. I didn't know it was considered jazzy. I just knew I loved it. And NOLA was the flip side, that I remember.
Yikes! Make sure you remove the record and lock the tone arm down prior to folding the turntable into the unit. I know.... I had one of those.... LOL!
love this little tune.reminds me of when i took my dogs for walks out in the field.they are no longer with me but the song reminds me of how happy they were out in the open.

Ah, somewhere I have this and other albums by this fellow, many containing those far-out ladies cheerily accompanying, singing things like "ting ting ting" and so on...
Dave here. Amazing! Your stereo still performed so well, less bass it seems, after 45 years, in 2008! My '62 Garrard changer became useless after about 20 years. I'm surprised that those big speakers put out what I call a "boxey" sound, characteristic of many of the cheap phonographs produced for kids, or the typical tone-deaf American. (My first reel-to-reel tape recorder was a Voice of Music machine. A fitting name.)
For me,this melody is full of memories, when 40 years ago,my parents and I were travelling by car around in the black forest and the radio plays this song!I guess,it was an sunny sunday&everthing fits!!_So much thanks for posting!!!Thank You!
Wow. To what measures taken to post something on YouTube. Sincerely meant with the knobs and such. I love this piece. And a sincere Thank you. Nice unit.
Hard to believe that by 1974, RCA had left the audio consumer electronics division and concentrated on Video. Bad idea... they came back for a short while until GE bought them out in 1986 and dismantled what was once America's leading communications and consumer electronics leader.
A high quality stereo hi-fi (high fidelity sound). Not the top of the line though, the best one was automatic.....the arm knew what size record was there by the speed selected and would operate by itself when play was selected.
I was sitting at home thinking about my child hood and remembered this tune. looked up and man this brings back memories. The summer of 65 listening to the local am station riding in my Dad's 61 Chevy. Awesome!!!
I recall this on the radio as I was home on leave heading for Vietnam in 1965. Different than most of the other stuff on the radio at the time (way , way too much Beatle shit) but a good song.
THANKS a million for posting this delightful song...one of my best 1960's memories. Hearing it never fails to brighten my day & my mood....I can well understand why it was a 1965 million seller. Mr Jankowski was truly a rare & brilliant talent! :)
What an enormous hit in 1965! Even the R&R radio stations played it every hour or so, comparable to the eternal "A Summer Place". This music trancends time and taste. Thank you!!

very cool record player nice sound i missed those kind used to have zenith suitcase record player was really nice wish i hadent gotten rid of it. i remeber taking it to my friendsw house for partys back when 45s were popular.nice very cool
Highest chart position was # 11 on the Chum Chart and stayed for seven weeks! Not bad for what it was and the times. Memories are as close as closing your eyes.
You hit the nail on the head! This was probably the number one "elevator music" song of all times. I would hear it 10 times a day when it first came out. Even the AM rock stations played it! This was summer of 1965.
What's funny is I liked the Muzak when I was working. Of course I'd never admit it. I was into Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath and other hard rock music. It's not the same anymore since every store just puts a radio station over the speakers.
Doesn't it, though? I feel like I'm back in my mom's kitchen, looking for a popsicle in the refrigerator after a hard day of riding bikes and playing in the back yard. Thanks for the memories...
My family and I did "eine Schwarzwaldfahrt" last year. This tune would have been great for whistling down the trails. The record player was cool, too. I'm not sure if my nine-year-old son has ever seen one in the flesh, so to speak.
Wow, this made me weep a bit. I miss those happy years and my family so much. Really brings back great memories of sweeter, simpler days. Thank you for posting this. <3
The Summer of 1965...Family picnic, roasted corn on the cob, grilled brats, and coasting down in the wagon in Estabrook park....This song brings back happy memories!!!
I haven't heard this in years....decades!!!.....one of those songs heard on the car's AM radios while rolling down the road during a family's weekend drive to view New England's autumnal foliage. Thanks for posting this lovely little tune.
Very nice. Thanks for posting this. I was a kid when this came out, and had been taking piano lessons for 4 years. I still want to try to play it. Just wish it were on CD. Can't find it on CD. A true classic!
Unfortunately, it's a Herb Alpert/Tijuana Brass rendition. I love the Tijuana Brass, but I was looking for Jankowski's version. Lots of his songs are digitized, but not this one yet.
i found it after all these years. i'm so pleased!! reminds me of my childhood/nostalgia, sadness and yearning. thought i was the only one who might appreciate this type still. going to get out Mantavani in the am. Learnt some new dancing steps at class tonight. Maybe i can use them . waltz etc
Gawd I remember when this was the equivilent to a boom box! There were models that had an AM/FM tuner and later on a 6" TV. Actually, I don't miss the vinyl one bit. CD'sand MP3's are 100% better!
I remember this song being played in Chicago over and over on WLS, WCFL,WJJD and WAIT... All AM stations! Did not hear it in Stereo until about 1985 on a local FM oldies station. WFYR I believe.
Too bad kids today missed out on some great instrumental hits but most have also missed out on good ole home cooking too! Glad I was in the right generation!
This song was always a favorite of mine...considering I grew up in the goden age of Rock and Roll....this will always be one of the best instrumentals ever!!!!
I, too, was a kid when this came out. Whatever happened to the instrumental song becoming a popular hit? I'm definitely a rock n' roll generation person, but I miss the instrumental. This is a great song.
Fantastic arrangement -WoW ! ! ! ! I hear the Ladi Geisler bass guitar technique used in Bert Kaempferts orchestra. It's those plucked strings that make tis beat so special. Did Ladi play on this -anybody know? I'Ve been doing searches on all these bandleaders to learn how they created their unique sounds and appreciate the music even MORE than before ! ! ! ! !
I was 8 years old in 1965 and one of my very favorite things to do then was to watch records spin as they played. I still love to do that....thanks for the fun! Great song too!!!
I was 3 in 1965 and I always liked to watch records spin on my sisters Hi Fi. My therapist once told me that that is a symptom of autism in some children just sitting and watching things spin. But I was never diagnosed with autism in fact I did very well in school. Go figure
Thank you! When I was a teen ager, the local radio station played this every morning as I prepared for school. Listening to this music raised my spirits every morning. I love it! Thank you!
The turntable reminds me a bit of the portable Westinghouse "hi-fi" I got for Christmas one year around 1967 or '68 ... yours is a lot nicer than mine was, though.
Unknown. I know it was not on a TV show in the USA. I remember someone telling me it was a theme tune to some cooking show in england back in the 70's and 80's.
Reach for the stars was the game show, they used the Herb Alpert version...
From Wikipedia:
"In a move similar to The Match Game, Reach for the Stars looked to the popular music charts of the day for its theme, which was the Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass version of Horst Jankowski's A Walk in The Black Forest. The song had been released two years before on the Going Places album."
I've always loved this song and heard it on the radio recently; I was hoping someone had posted a version on YT. I agree with your vote that it is the best pop instrumental ever recorded. Thanks for posting it!
I will have the videos up within the next few days. I have completed repair to a 1967 RCA CTC-25 in which the CRT needed the repair. ive made a much better video of the process.
Fantastic. And I thought the Mercury release sounded good...!
I am curious to know what you think about the stylus contribution to the top end of the frequency spectrum. Is it desirable to let the stylus leak into (and contribute to) the overall sound or should this be covered while playing, so that the sound is as close to the recorded signal as possible? It seems that there may be less leakage from the RCA Victor stylus than usual, is this correct?
One of the great instrumentals of the 60s! And playing it on a vinyl through a vintage compact stereo is genius! I had an RCA much like that one, but bought it in 1966 or '67.

I like this song. Doug, I was wandering what happened to the CRT bonding repair videos?
jefferyb304 3 years ago
I will have the videos up within the next few days. I have completed repair to a 1967 RCA CTC-25 in which the CRT needed the repair. ive made a much better video of the process.

Fantastic. And I thought the Mercury release sounded good...!
I am curious to know what you think about the stylus contribution to the top end of the frequency spectrum. Is it desirable to let the stylus leak into (and contribute to) the overall sound or should this be covered while playing, so that the sound is as close to the recorded signal as possible? It seems that there may be less leakage from the RCA Victor stylus than usual, is this correct?
