I love it how the term is 'Escorting a hijacked aircraft' the fighters around them can't do shit. You know why they are there? If those terrorists were to turn towards a populated city, you know what would happen to the people in that airliner? They get shot down. For anyone who doesn't believe this, as cold hearted as it is... check it up for yourselves. Basically sacrificing a few lives to save many. Really wish I was wrong on this as it sounds heartless and cold :/ Hope it never happens again

I'd like to know what the point would be of 'escorting' a hijacked airplane with fighter jets/ I can understand why a hijacked plane would be shot down, but why have other planes simply fly next to it/

@MrBadwordalert likelihood of them having bombs is probably more minimal now than before, so the more likely danger would be the intent of using the plane itself as a missile, like they did on 11 september 2001. if the aircraft was refusing to comply w/ instructions, they definitely have orders to shoot it down.
