I don't think he was a bad host. I think since nobody can remember last year's Oscars much less 1995's, David has everyone convinced he was a flop with self-deprecating humor.
I agree with everyone who has posted- I don't understand all the criticism of his Oscar hosting. He was really funny, and the audience seemed to think so as well.
That was great! Thanks for posting. Dave was awesome that night, I can't believe he was viewed as a flop. Although I think he was asked to host again and turned them down.
What the hell? This is the first time Ive ever watched this, this was apparntly one of the biggest award show bombs ever, a big blip in lettermans career and a complete embarassment - i dont see that, I thought it was v good! I actually laughed out loud once or twice, and the Arnie joke was hilarious.
This wasn't too bad... if he did one or 2 less Uma-Oprah lines, it would've been much better received. Or, he should have saved it for his 2nd or 3rd joke in - to have that be your lead joke was a killer.
First I would like to thank MrYomanmasa for sharing this video on Youtube. I never thought I would get a chance to see this recording. I missed it when it was originally aired, over15(!) years ago...and I've always regretted it.
Dave totally nailed it. He was deft and poised in his dellivery. After all was said in done, he had nothing to regret. An uptight, idiot, american audience was too comedically challenged for the mordant humor and scathing wit of this living legend.
This permanently damaged Letterman's ratings. Before this, Letterman had higher ratings than Leno. After this, Leno passed Letterman in the ratings for the next 15 years.
I love how uncomfortable and nervous Dave is because he is doing his act to a lot of people he doesn't respect and who who knows probably don't get his humor at all.
Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get... unless you're sitting beside Roger Ebert and you know you're not gonna get any!! Hilarious!!
@IXM360 sometimes htey just invite famous peopel for tv ratings, same reason hte twilight stars and zac efron got to go, they weren't nominees, they were publicity for the show and red carpet.
I could never understand why there was so much flack about Letterman's hosting job. I thought he was pretty funny and was confident and the audience seemed to enjoy him and they are usually very tough on the host. It was like watching one of Dave's monologues on his show which I'm pretty sure was what they wanted. And the Bite Me joke was good ;)
Letterman's ratings slide began with that year's Oscars. The tide turned right after Jay Leno asked Hugh Grant, "What the hell were you thinking?"; he kicked Dave's ass ever since.
I was luck enough to see a taping of the Late Show with David Letterman last year. And Dave is the greatest in a small theatre or tv studio. I think that most of this material was excellent he just developed it too quickly for such a big room so that it is sometimes difficult to pick up what he is saying immediately. Dave's still the best though
i think this was not such a bad hosting as has been reported time and again, and I don't understand why david letterman agrees that he was too bad when except only a few of his jokes, the rest of them were very good. and he was certainly better than this year's hosts.
Oh my God. This was painfully unfunny... Not as bad as this year's hosts, but still very bad. People, do NOT compare this shit to the very hilarious Mr. Ricky Gervais... He makes me proud ot be a Brit.
There are people who actually think Ellen DeGeneres was good at hosting the Oscars??? She was terrible! Hataway, Franco and Jackman relied exclusively on their charm, which wasn't enough unfortunately, Rock and Stewart were wonderfully irreverent, Whoopi Goldberg was larger than life, as was, in a completely different way, Billy Crystal, but my favourite remains Steve Martin, fantastic! I adore David Letterman, he has a very subtle sense of humour which is not for everybody...
This was the ONLY Academy Awards ceremony worth watching EVER. What's really interesting is how raw, honest East coast humor flies right over the head of the fucking phonies in Hollywood!
Dave's cool but this was NOT better than Ellen's. Better than Chris Rock's, Jackman's, Franco & Hathaway's and Jon Stewart's but no better than Ellen.
This is hilarious! Pretty much the same thing as the current Ricky Gervais Golden Globe trouble. It was just super funny! And again: these people are actors. It's not Mother Teresa, it's Schwarzenegger and Oprah.
Letterman was not Academy Awards material, he works his material slowly and focus on absurdist comedy. He was never much of a stand up comedian. He was much better at it in the mid 80s.
It wasn't bad at all. He slammed the celebs the way Ricky Gervais slammed the celebs at the Golden Globe. One of the lines he used was "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman and he said that was the line Arnold Schwartzenegger used to date Maria Schriver. Then he went on to slam Arnold and Sly Stallone to the point where you had to wonder if they would go up there and kick his ass.
ahh..it wasn't that bad.

Not the funniest monologue of all time, but there were a few good jokes. Certainly not terrible. The "Uma-Oprah" gag got old quick though.

"I shouldn't have even been there." -David Letterman. As debatable as his Oscar hosting was, it's sure given him a wealth of material since then.
