  • Black smoke just means she's broken in and under a nice load.

  • @judgeman1103 Black smoke is unused diesel in the combustion cycle, often when far too much is injected or the engine timing is out. SMOKE=BROKE on a diesel, it shouldn't have ANY apart from a puff at the start.

If you inject too much diesel it just causes problems with the exhaust valves and makes them stick open. Try pouring a pint of water in to a small cup, it overflows...that is what happens with too much diesel in a cylinder.

Efficient working diesels do NOT smoke, even under load.

  • @urbex2007 smoke does not equal broke on a diesel. it smokes under the initial load from additional fueling untill the turbo spools up. it takes a second for the turbo to catch up "turbo lag"

  • @urbex2007 lol smoke is not broke, look up an alco, if they arnt smoking they arnt running

  • that realy needs a dpf

  • fuck you polar bears!!!

  • hard bite

  • TOO much smoke!

  • diesel is awesome =)

  • How big is the engine in there?

  • I think Al Gore just cried a little.

  • @eddimull oh boo hoo

  • there is 2 stacks thats y it looks like a loto smoke

  • The smoke on a large unit always looks dirtier than it really because of the diameter of the smoke plume is much larger.

When the engine goes from 0 to 100% load the turbocharger has to spin up to provide enough air to completely burn the fuel. Until this happens you get a lot of smoke.

  • Inquinador!!!

  • our load test contracts call for a routine slow warm up and load, and during the middle of the 4 hour test, there are shock loads of 0-full load, which produces way cool smoke =)

then cool down and closeout of the test at about 4 hours

  • schei.ß umweltverschmutzer....

  • Black smoke occurs either because of a large load or start up in this case low rpm= black smoke other then that are chocked up engine or injectors that are too large ! idiots do that mostly ,but carbon & CO2 isn't all that bad.

  • >.> thats what our data center's generator looks like when we turn the microwave on in the break room! ... J/k of course.

  • very nice report

  • nice

  • we have some at my highschool, not nearly as big though

the muffler is as big as the engine block itself

  • Binary load controll :D

  • EEk !

This generator don't look "Greeny" :(

  • Oh please! Using electricity doesn't look greeny to you... oh wait, you have hot water and are using your computer!

  • It's not the electricity the problem, but all this black smoke :(

  • You know not of which you speak, so please do not worry. You are not going to be the cause of the end of the world, just to let you know. Oh yeah, and the sky is not falling either.

  • Diesel and black smoke are cleaner than gas. Smoke is only particles, where as gas engines throw more co2 out.

  • It never occured to me that the smell of the exhaust could be a problem.

I don't really get your definition of "clean", but you're right: The TDIs don't blow out many particles, if they have a particle filter. Otherwise they do, although surely not as many as the engine above...

  • "clean" is the amount of co2 and other chemicals that are emitted from the engine. The smoke is only soot (burnt carbon) I know it doesn't look pretty, but the Diesels burn more of the fuel than Gas engines do (efficiency rating is higher). Besides that the particles are release mostly during heavy load revving, once the engine is at speed they go away (mostly)

  • Oh, and I should note, keep in mind these are backup gen's. They don't run 24x7, in fact, they are prolly only fired up once a month or so for testing. I'm sure they're only used for power outages.

  • @KINGPASSYXXX Who cares? That's the best part about diesel's, the smell, and the smoke!

  • that's stupid, the main part of diesel is that nice smell in the morning

  • @AgentHog i agree tis that smell of a big diesel engine in the morn but i still like that rich blend of fumes from a V6 petrol also in the morn sort of gets the adrenaline going haha

  • its called soot and it falls back to the ground but not gasoline

  • Nice, but too darn short. Let's see more - gauges too!

  • cool i love the diesels
