I am even more disappointed that he agreed with O'Reilly that Muslims did not face a backlash in the US after 9/11. Mosque burnings? Attacks against individual Muslims? Widespread discrimination / racial profiling? Widespread media attacks (Mr. O'Reilly included) that demonized Islam? Hundreds of detentions without cause? . . . Sure, the US may do better than most countries, but that does not mean you can/should deny some very real problems.

But the questions then becomes whether millions of moderate, peaceful Muslims in the US, and hundreds of millions of others worldwide to blame for 9/11. Juan said some pretty dumb things. "Muslims in Muslim garb" don't hijack planes. EVERY terrorist wore western attire.

Juan also recently said blacks aren't the ones hijacking planes, suggesting that only Arabs do it. Wrong. Richard Reid was half black, as is Zacharias Moussaoui.

It's Shirley Sherrod all over again. If you actually listen over O'Reilly's ranting, William's controversial remark comes into context with the rest of his position. He's saying that despite his irrational fears American society can't act on such stereotypes and be true to its ideals.

Firing him has done more to empower conservative demagogues than anything else. NPR should have brought him into a calmer forum to discuss his views with better clarity instead of fire him without discussion.
