  • Her accent really threw me too on this ep! I watched X-Files when it first aired, and I saw her do other things too way back then including host a special about dangers of flying and she always used the American accent.

  • Gillian's laugh is so adorable! <3 <3 <3

  • She pretty.

  • He doesnt let her finish a single line :/

  • I believe she grew up in England, although she was born in chicago

  • I was never that much of a fan of 'The X Files', but I think she looks gorgeous here... and I had no idea she was British.

  • She lived in the UK for 11 years of her life as a kid to a 11 year old, then she moved to the US after 11 years old and adopted a US accent to fit it, so she speaks both depending on location.

  • Just her gaping at the little figurine - ah she is class!

  • Supposedly she talks in a British accent when in London and an American accent when in the States.

  • @jackassbitter

    Typical schizophrenic actor.

  • Bleh. For people who obviously know nothing about her: This is her REAL accent. Its her first accent she picked up when she started talking at age 2, when living in the UK. Her "American" accent is fake one she "puts on", to fit in when shes in America, or if her roll (ie. Agent Scully) calls for it. Some people need to read bios on people.

  • @RelishHead101 So she needs to be herself and speak like this on every show then. ;)

  • @RelishHead101

then why does it sound fake

and why is there a video of her on richard and judy show in her american accent ?

    watch?v=riLHpO8Vq20

  • Oh I did not see it before. She is wearing the oh so famous flip flops ^^

  • She actually grew up in Britain but when she moved to the US she adopted a midwestern accent because she didn't fit in..

  • What ... Is ... She ... Wearing ???

  • I guess she felt low key!? I'm not sure. . .

  • she doesnt even smile in the series coz her character is so deep and serious but she' is much funnier in real life then david duchovny

  • Oh Gilly. She is wonderful and the most beautiful woman alive. <3

  • she is indeed!

  • when did the x-files dolls come out?

  • I have the Barbie XFiles dools from Fight the future movie they are from 1998 I think ... limited edition !!! and I love them so much !!!!!!! It's Barbie as Scully and Ken as Mulder :) but there was a lot of different dolls :)

  • Because her family moved to London when she was three. And moved back to the U.S. when she was 11...

  • i love how down to earth she is.

  • American accent's Better than english

  • I'd beg to differ. American's sound dumb.

  • "I'd beg to differ"...this is EXACTLY why I love Brits.

  • hey now they were just saying their opinion you don't have to be mean.

  • Excuse me, explain to me how I was mean?

  • You said Americans sound dumb...well now that doesn't seem like a nice thing to say to me.

  • OK, well someone said the American accent is better than British and I disagreed. I shouldn't have said Americans sound dumb. I should have said you sound brash.

  • Oh well thanks. Aren't you just a doll. Which region is dumb, or are you lumping us all into one?

  • I apologise, I should not have said that. There are stupid Americans as are there stupid English people. We both have great accents, lets leave it at that :)

  • why is she speaking with a british accent, she's from chicago lol

  • Because now she lives in England, and playing there on movies and stuff..

  • What is "a british accent"? Isn´t "american"

an accent and "british english" the original language? ; )

  • of course, but its relative and considering she's most famous for the x files which was an American TV show, it raised the question. Don't be nationalistic, its a thing of the past.

  • Nationalistic? I´m from Sweden. And I was only

    joking... ; )

P.S. But I more often need subtitling when I

watch US TV-shows.... compared to British ones... (maybe not scottish ones.. ; ) )

  • americans dont understand that they speak a language from a far off country.

  • its funny u shud say that coz i was watching a film the other day and noticed an american character say that one of the english characters had an accent and implied that he (the american) wasnt speaking with one....very odd!

  • Yes you are correct seeing that British English is the language that other countries such as America speak. Americans speak English, ie: England.

  • She was born in Chicago, but her family lived in England for the first few years of her life and she picked up the accent then. She mentions it in the interview.

  • @bphutchins she was raised in england.

  • @bphutchins She lived in England 'til she was 13. She originally had a British accent and attempted to adopt an American one once she moved to the states coz she was bullied for her Brit accent. Now she involuntarily slips between the two depending on her environment and has said she wishes she could control it but can't.

I'm an Irish transplant living in America and I have to say, I feel her pain. It's like a switch flips and you can't do anything about it, your accent is a chameleon.

  • @Gailers5 Well, if its a Galway accent, it can't be too bad...

  • @noelio67 Sadly it's a Kildare one! Pretty bland. None of the cool lilt of the west :(

  • @noelio67 Excuse me asking but.... What do you mean by "Kildare" and "Galway" accents? Are those types of british accents or what? I'm American so don't understand and am not familiar with what those are.

  • @ScullysBaby Irish accents!....County Kildare is in the east of the country and Galway is on the western seaboard right on the Atlantic

  • Comment removed

  • @Gailers5 Gillian didn't just ATTEMPT to adopt an American accent, she did learn to speak with an American accent after moving back to US at age 11. The accent she originally used as Scully in XF was her real accent that she also used in real life. She only fell back into her British accent after moving back to the UK after Xfiles was over. She also had difficulty going back to her American accent in XF2 movie. Some words were not pronounced the way Americans do or how series Scully would've.

  • @bphutchins she grew up in england for like 10 years she speaks in both dialects. like john barrowman for torchwood.

  • @bphutchins actually, she naturally has a british accent, but she was mocked and felt out of place in the american midwest and soon adopted a midwest accent. to this day, her accent depends on her location — for instance, in an interview with Jay Leno she spoke in an American accent, but in this interview she speaks with an british accent.

  • @bphutchins she actually lived in England for 8 or 9 years as a kid .....

  • @bphutchins its her natural accent. she moved to england when she was 2 and so its the way she learned to talk. she adapted to an american accent when she moved back to the USA in high school and was bullied because of her brittish accent.

  • I'll anally probe her

  • Fucking hell, she's british? She just became hotter.

  • she is fab isnt she! She grew up in North London hence the occasional British accent.

  • i love it when she speaks with that accent, so cute!

  • she sounds alot more british in this than usual

  • She does, there is a clip of her on Letterman with an american accent....I think she's confused!

  • hey ,you don't have to be so rude. as i said, it removed by youtube,i can send it to you by email if you like.

  • you should totally send it to me please!!!

  • oh, can you send it to me too?

  • Nice fake accent. Weirdo.

  • She doesn't have a fake accent. She grew up in the UK so she has a trans-Atlantic accent, kind of like Kylie Minogue.

  • @therealslimlady1982 Kylie doesnt switch accents like Gillian seems to love to do. She doesn't get bullied anymore too. lol I don't see what the big deal is.

  • shes fit 4 a 39 year old

  • She's fit for a 20 year old. :)

  • well i wouldn't say no

  • where's part 2?

  • Youtube removed it...

  • why??

  • copy rights i guess...i can send it to your E-mail if you want to

  • At 3.20 she says 'Wot, wots the question?', she clearly isn't faking that reaction.

  • is she british

  • not exactly, she born in chicago. her parents are british.

  • Her parents aren't British. Gillian's dad went to film school in England.

  • really? i read somewhere that her parents are british. but she lived in England when she was very young.

  • I saw an interview on here a few years ago with Gillian and her mom and her mom didn't have an accent at all. Her parents moved there when she was about 2. And I know she has family in michigan and I read somewhere that she has family in illinois as well. I know michigan for sure. She was here in michigan last spring for her grandmother's birthday.

  • Ive never even thought that she was even associated with england until recently, I certainly have never noticed an English accent but I suppose it harder for someone who is from there to recognise!! It seems that she lived in England for 9 years then the US for ages and now she travels back and forth doing plays and films in both countries. According to Wikipedia anyway so who really knows the truth!!

  • Yup....she doesn't live in the US anymore, she actually lives in London now.

  • cute and funny!:)

  • I think Gillian is one of those rare artists who is a bit quirky (nuts) but that nuttiness leads to brillaint performances like the one in Bleakhouse. I was floored by that performance so if talking in different accents and taking on different personalities makes it work for her, I hope she keeps it up. Daniel Day Lewis stays in character for his entire movies and he's brilliant

  • Except it's really not fake at all. :)

  • Well you think wrong then, don't you? This ain't Mary Poppins.

  • But Irish people speak English.

  • I appreciate the point, but many Irish people can speak Irish (Gaelic) as well as English (North and South).

But I think Norton has adopted his accent for the media and makes his origins not easily recognisable. I think his accent was stronger in Father Ted.

  • i have this problem, too, where i will regain my childhood accent when i move to or from the place i grew up. it's pretty embarrassing, but genuine.

  • @proinsiaspad Yep I think so too. Sounds very put on.

  • She originally had an english accent.....she had to adopt her American one when she moved away from England in her teens. So she is just talking in her original accent here.

  • I love her as Scully her voice is so sexy

  • I find it hilarious how she has a perfectly perfected AMERICAN accent when doing interviews for American television. Yet she's full-blown British in Britain. Nobody's accent changes that drastically.

My neighbors moved to the US from Portugal 35 years ago and they still speak with a Portuguese accent...

    It's silly that she's pretending.

  • She may not be pretending ,some people really catch accents easily.

  • @pinkshrimp Or some people pretend they do to act proper.

  • Portuguese and American are two very different languages not at all alike, while British and American are more or less the same language but two different accents. English isn't my first language, so when I were taught English in school we would read both British and American texts while people learning Portuguese would never also read American texts!

Also it is proven that being in a specific area with a specific accent, people tend to catch it very quickly, mostly unconsciously.

  • It also depends on who you spend most of your time around. If your Portuguese neighbors spend a LOT of time only with their family and other Portuguese people, they're not going to switch accents so easily. It also depends on where they learned the language from - if they learned English in a Portuguese school with a Portuguese teacher (as opposed to an American school with an American teacher) its going to have a different accent.

  • @ChoctawCreek Yeah a lot of people tend to believe she's doing this because she moved back to England and omg, is suddenly a Brit. Hells no. I work in V.O. Do you know how hard it is to perfect an accent? The reason this accent is sounding so fake is because it bouncing around constantly, also her vowels are askew. She opens her mouth wider than she should if this was a real, balanced natural accent. Please.

  • @ialwaysbesingin so you think it is fake then ?

  • where is the rest of it?

  • its been removed by youtube..

  • That so doesn't sound like her.

  • She was born in the US, but she's been living in UK since The X-Files ended.

  • god i love her her laugth is so sexy

  • She's really British!!! That's her real accent!!!

  • She was actually born in the United States, but she lived in England at some point in her childhood. She switches between the two accents, depending where she is, and what role she is playing.

  • She totally souned American on the X-Files. It's shocking to see her talking with a British accent, because her voice was so deep as Scully!

  • @tolkien56 Why?

  • As to the whole accent thing, i've been currently living in wales for the pass five years and my accent has changed into a hybrid welsh, english accent. When i go back to england to visit i revert back to my hometown accent. So it can and does change depending on the location and what accents are around you.

  • I'm Welsh, lol. Just thought I'd share.

  • Those asking about the accent...did you actually WATCH the video? He asks her about the accent. So observant.

  • don't be so mean, maybe they don't understand because the accent is so hard to understand

  • And Scully needs some sweet 290x love

  • She lived in London for many years as a child and originally spoke with an English accent. She goes back to it naturally.

  • Hi. When did this interview take place, approx?

  • looks like just after XF wrapped, in 2002.

  • i stil jus dont get why shes swiching accents.. is it a recent thing or has she been swiching her hole life? info plz i luv this women :)

  • Well she pretty much explains it if you watch.

  • Why does she always look terrified when she first comes out?

  • I never knew she was English!

  • i did have a hard time understanding the host's slang pronounciation of words!he sorts of like stammering but not.

  • . . .

  • shes so beautiful. and i love her accent this way.

  • if you, like Gillian, live in England, obviously an english accent is picked up, if she moved to America before puberty she would have a permanant american accent, but she moved after puberty so she has english as her first accent. before puberty, accent changes, after puberty, accent stays. Obviously with her spending all her time in the US she fell into US accent but her first accent will always be british.

  • Accent doesn't stay after puberty...your accent adapts no matter what your age. I've been witnessing it over the past 5 years with an older lady who is originally from Ireland (she's probably 50-something?) that shops in the store I work in. She now has a 100% American accent, and when she first started shopping there she had a very thick Irish brogue.

  • then again, if she makes a rare US appearance these days, she suddenly switches her voice back. She has a chameleon personality.

  • She's very versatile & talented that she can adapt to her surroundings. It would be great if she could act a spy kind of role where she could utilise her various actions -she does a good German accent as well!!!

  • she went to school in england til she was 10 I think. And your way of speaking is very well developed by then, when she moved to the US she changed her voice as a kid to fit in obviously and her voice stuck that way. It's understandable that her voice who change back now. I mean, I'm in Texas and when I wasn't for a while I lost my accent, and when I came back, "Yee HAW!" ;)

  • love her cute little flipflops she's wearing all the time;-)

  • She was actually a teenager when she moved back to USA so it´s understandable that has that accent.

  • sorry made a typeo! i was talking about gillian anderson! but she mentions herself why she has an english accent. I made the comment b4 i watched the clip! Oops!

  • Is was born in england but moved to the states when she was 5, i think.(not sure of the age)

  • Sorry answerd my own q

  • Why is she talking with an English accent?

  • She's british originally but moved to America with her parents when she was younger.

  • wasn't she born in chicago then moved to london

  • this is awesome!!! thanks a lot!! you rock!!!

  • hehe you're welcome!

  • thanks a lot!!! i enjoyed them very much!!!
