i used to ride motocross, these guys are nuts... i'm so sorry for what happened to this young man but to be honest i've watched many of his crash compilations and he was NOT a good rider despite winning some events. About FMX itself. I am more interested in the usual MX which is hugely dangerous, but FMX is crazy. It looks good and I respect it and it needs to be appreciated, when pushed to its limits, if it has any, hundreds of times more dangerous than the actual racing, MX.

Actually yeah it would work, if by "work" you mean stand a much better chance of not being dead or paralyzed.

The bike would crash on top of his body and he would break a lot of bones but his head and neck would be preserved and if he rolls it right, his spine should be okay too. Would you rather risk breaking bones or die / paralyzed?

People have jumped from that height on to concrete via rolling without any injuries. The differences on the POSITIVE is that this is dirt and the landing is (usually) a ramp. The negative side is that you don't get to break the fall with your legs and you have a very heavy bike crashing on top of you. So yes you'll get injured but you will stand a much better chance of recovery.

Knowing how to bail properly (if he didn't already, which I suspect he did) would not have helped when he died.

My point about the weight of the bike etc. was that if you put your arms out and tried to roll Parkour style you wouldn't have enough strength so your arms would buckle and you'd still land on your neck. Sorta like what happened in this video.

Well actually he did, but he was too committed to correcting himself. As sad as it was to watch, he could have rolled much like he did in this video and probably lived.

FYI, the speed is a good thing. It helps give momentum to the roll. The hands are just guides, the real idea is to tuck your head to the side and land on the side of your back. So yes arms would buckle but you can still get the weight on to your shoulder/back by tucking in.
