Man have u done any research? or are u just another dumb white man. There is a bolt hold open lever on the right side of the gun close to the trigger. Open the bolt then load your mag. As far as filing down the mags that is a necessity. These guns are made like AK's. They are loose fitting and have loose tolerances. That's why they are so reliable in sand mud water hot cold. If u complain about a lil filing then yea stick to ur slow cycleing pump shotguns. Saigas are probably over ur compitance
you can re profile the bolt to allow for easy full mag insertion, But i agree its a pretty big flaw, not even mentioning how much the neutered the shot gun to be importable.Oh and arnt you worried abut 922r with that 20 round drum?
Thanks for the review. I couldn't get the 5-rounder that came with it installed (gonna shave it down), but I was able to get the SureFire 12-rounder installed with no problems. When I loaded ammo into the 12-mag I wasn't able to get it installed at all unless I held the bolt open manually. Is there a manual bolt hold I'm missing or did it never come with one?
You have to do a little modifying to some AK's and AK variants..its not big deal..quit bitching about it..you should just stick to your flint lock's then you dumbass southern inbred trash.
ill tell u a bad gun awful design the russian sks with the bolt closed you cant put a mag in and the izmash saiga shotguns have the same concept you gotta push the button when you got the bolt back to keep it open and then load ur mag much easier to load a mag hey in the 40's the m1 carbine was designed right lol so my opion its all about money and how many they can sell the gun to us gun companies b4 restrictions bans saigas from entering the usa this gun is a mean bastard
Thanks alot for the info ! I've always had 870 s and in my opinion they are a GREAT workhorse ,but my main reason for wanting to switch to a siaga was the "speed " of loading so this was good to find out .Thanks
Yeah, I wouldn't trust a stock saiga for home defense. They need to be tuned by someone who knows saigas. There are guys out there who can tune them. I think a well tuned saiga in willing hands can kill a lot of bad people faster than any Mossberg or Remington pump gun.
@raimundough i disagree right out of the box my saiga functioned flawlessly, I was shooting 12pellet 00 buck in 10rd promag magazines and had no feed problems or function problems.
@jdwohlers Hmmm... My buddys was like that too, loved the 00 buck till we went to walmart and bought the cheap winchester 100 rd bulk pack and experienced all sorts of failures and jams. Then I got to shoot a tuned & converted Saiga and it felt like a different weapon altogether. It cycled both heavy and light loads flawlessly. That's what convinced me. Glad your works
if you practice reloading reloads fine in a full mag if you have trouble with the full mag take 1 round out also you can have the bolt in the open position load mag rack the bolt foward problem fix
im looking to purchase this gun how much u get it for? the reason i like it is the 20 round drum is there any other high capacity shot guns u know of?
it's idiots like this that they designed the bolt catch for but he doesn't even know how to use that, and as for the bolt he doesn't even know how to use the gas adjustment... just wow...
spend some time with the gun and become more familiar with the small fixes for this gun once you work out all the bs it will be head and shoulders above your other shotguns
I haven't had any trouble with the factory magazine, but I am having trouble with the Taiwanese 5 round mags I just bought. Could you explain the steps you took to file your magazine down?
Well, I basically just took a file and files just a small amount off each side of the little square raised area on the magazine. Then I would try to see if it fit; if it didn't I would file a little more. Just don't take too much off at one time because you can't put it back on. Hope this helps.
About the mag.s the best ones for the saiga 12 are the surfire ones or factory. The poblem with other mags are that they leave to much of the shell sticking upwords in that case you will have troble. What program did you use to place that scope duplex on your screen? Nice vid.
I miss my Winchester 1300. These shotguns are cool but if you know how to tactically load a regular pump action then I think it makes this firearm merely a fun gun. I am not bashing the firearm but it seems to have it problems. I am about sick of all the plastic they put on clips, mags and stocks. I maintain machines for a living and about 90% of the time I have a breakage is when plastic and metal are combined. I always have to shave stuff off to fit. This makes me love my old Stevens single 20
zaldivarbigboy - thanks for watching. Yeah, I found about the bolt hold open lever here on youtube. The guys at the gun range didn't seem to know about it nor did anyone else I talked to. My magazines work fine now that I have figured out how to keep the bolt open and filed them down.
well my friend I did some really deep research before I bought the gun and you show me something new. I didnt know that off the bat even some of the factory mags didn't work. mine has worked flawlessly from day one even with the two 10 surefire mags but about the loading process you have to use the bolt hold open lever which to hold the bolt back which is on the right side of the triger guard is a small silver lever that pushes into the reciever and when done with the bolt back it holds it open.
you have to pult the bolt back and then engage the lever if you push on the lever and then rack the bolt back your bold will desengage the spring the puts tension on the lever and it will slip into your reciever locking our bolt back and cusing a mess. this is the only real problem I have with the saiga and its a simple fix but it can really put you out of the battle if it happens in a firefight. another thing if the bolt dosent lock up compleatly you have to push it foward with the bolt handle.
This problem only happens when you don't let the bolt ride foward with the full force of the recoil spring. in other words when you don't let it fly foward and baby it. so just let it fly.
Sorry your gun hasn't been working out for you, and I hope that the good advice that you've received in this comments section will help you put your it to better use.
Man this the absolute best review of this weapon that I have seen on the Saiga 12. I've been really considering purchasing this shotgun but i've had reservations based on what I've heard about the magazines and loading issues. I'm debating between the Mossberg 590 and the Saiga 12. Have you heard anything about the Saiga .410. Is it any easier to load.
noobtoaster - I agree 100%, I should be more familiar. But, when I bought the gun, I got the guys at the gun shop to go over it with me, as I do with all my guns. They knew nothing of the locking the bolt back. When I went to shoot it for the first time, several people saw me struggling with loading the magazines and offered assistance. They had no clue either. I first learned of this on Youtube after posting this video. Maybe the Youtuber's know more about guns than they guys at the shop.
After I posted this video, I keep hearing the gun is supposed to be loaded with the bolt open. That is the first I have heard of this???? The gun shop I go to even tried to fix it and they never mentioned the bolt had to be open. Now, I must be an idiot, but how do you get the bolt to stay open? I think I saw somewhere there is an extra part for it or something? Once I get this figured out, I will do a re-review for it. Thanks for commenting.
it is on the right hand side of the receiver next to the trigger guard.. You should become more familiar with a firearm before you do a review on it.. just my thoughts
Look around for more saiga-12 vids. Some discribe the part your looking for. I've also seen vids of people explaining that you have to file the "back end" down (as opposed to you fileing down the "front" end).
I agree. It should work right out of the box. I am going to try what noobtoaster suggested next time I go to the range. Do you have any idea how to get the bolt to lock back and stay back? I think this might be an extra part you have to buy for it. Thanks for commenting.
I was asking around on youtube, and it appears the magazine loading is mostly an issue of practice, and from the sounds of it, the individual gun. ASome saiga's are just built "off". According one clip manufacturer, this is about 20% of the saiga's that experience unusual clip problems, that can be solved via polishing, grinding and practice. No answer for you on the bolt. Try the saiga forum....if you can't find your answer there it doesn't exist.
my impression of the Saiga 12 is that it is an awesome gun with a lot of neutering going on. So you pay $450+ to get a gun with 3 legs so to speak, and then you pay another $200-$400 to get it "fixed" and filed so it will perform the way it was suppose to. Fixing things that are new bugs the hell out of me. I have heard about that clip loading problem from a lot of people. Why does the gun not work right out of the box? Yes the fixes are simple....so is buying a gun that works right.
unreliable? this is one of the most reliable firearms i have ever shot. ive shot over 2k rounds through mine. the only issues i have had were from user error (shooting high brass on the low brass setting will over gas the system, and vise versa) I keep mine on setting 1 unless im shooting cheap birdshot. As for loading a full mag, polish the bolt or load it with the bolt locked back here is the vid with it polished watch?v=Nfz92jaB95w and here is a vid with it locked back watch?v=RvyQAOpIfsM
