So with those "4wd" setups......Alot of them are actually 3 wheel drive, as one of the two front wheels are usually allowed to freewheel, when the diff. is unlocked, and acts as an open differential to increase turning ability....

As a tech, I see four wheel drive as 2 types...

Full-time and part-time... The part-time/automatic feature 4wd like on a trailblazer/envoy

Is constantly driving all four wheels but thru an actuator on the front diff, the front locks or unlocks to get awd/4wd..The transfercase has 2 speeds high and low, which is driver adjustable and electronically controlled thru pulse width modulation in a transfer case control module... This is not all, just a good example.

Actually, I was there, and that is the CEO of Starbucks (Coffee). That "dust" is actually coffee grounds. There was and uprising at the factory (this is the parking lot) and one of the workers (franky.. you know who you are) sabotaged his lambo by sticking gum under the hood and pinning down the throttle cable. lol easy.... 4 wheel drive is something the operator activates and can turn off or change its setting from high to low. if it doesnt have a low range its not a true 4x4 based on DEFINITION, all wheel drive engages automatically and limits what the operator can adjust on it.

Other awd cars use a viscous coupler(dsm,3000gt,bmw,toyota) which is basically 2wd until wheel slip occurs under ideal conditions....

A part time system will only engage "awd" under slippage of the main biased drive wheels under ideal conditions...

A full time 4wd system like on a ford exploder, I meant explorer awd.....It has three settings...4 wheel low, 4 wheel high, and awd(auto awd technically not awd)....At all times it delivers power to both diffs......But in auto 4wd or awd, the front diff locks or unlocks automatically hence the auto 4wd....That has A "full time" transfer case, Whereas a part time case will not constantly distribute power to drive axles , hence the part time..The confusing part is the front diff of awd vs 4wd....

Dirt doesnt make white smoke, ever. At first it looks a little brownish but I'm sure in Australia its pretty dry out in the summer and there are patches of dirt in their parking lots.
