Because school says so??? I was there yesterday and i wasn't there because the school said so. I also went through the trenches, did i have to? No. I went because it's an interest of mine and that the soldiers deserve to be remembered for what they have done especially the ones that were never found.
I was in the US military for 37 years. I learned about the Great War and toured those Hallow Fields where all Wars are measured. Menning Gate Taps moved me and gave me help in overcoming 2 years in Vietnam that made no sense.I am so glad we the Americans went to help in 1916 to bring Victory and dignity for our Europe brothers. The deaths of WW 1 overwhelm me . God Bless America.
Fortunately, there are fellow citizens of Ypres who show respect for the sacrifice of so many. Your Fire Brigade which has enacted The Last Post at the Menin Gate over 25,000 times since 1918 for instance. No-one ordered them to do it, least of all the British, and the token is VERY much appreciated over here.
The civilians were ordered out of Ypres by the British Army with the complete agreement of the Belgian Govt. and King. It was, after all, for their safety. How many do you think would have survived 4 years in a town of less then 1.5 m high under almost constant bombardment?
No-one is denying that Belgium didn't suffer. But the casualty lists speak for themselves:
Belgian Military 43,000
UK Military 885,00 (N.B. NOT inc. The Empire!)
20 Times the number!!! Indulge us a little. We even lost 40,000 more civilians than Belgium and the only Germans who set foot in the UK were prisoners!
what a wanker .you are a disgrace to your town. im sure you embarass most people from ypres if indeed you come from there.why dont you fuck off you piece of shit.
This comment is so sick !! Where did you read your "they they they story" ? About 53.000 civilians died in whole Belgium. 1.700000 (!)million soldiers in the Ypres area alone. If we didn't had the English, Australian, American, Irish men and boys who you are talking about, the war ended in 1914 and Belgium was Germany now ! Btw, most people of Ypres went to France and came back after the war.

Hmmm... It was the Americans clapping at the Ceremony as if it was some kind of show. It was like they had no clue what it was...
