I moved away in 71.. but have never ever ever stopped loving my home town. Detroit was and is still special... even though it gone down.. it will rise again.
I was all set to go down and witness this in person. But then I started thinking about all the dust mixed with 70+ years of mildew, rat droppings, asbestos and what have you. I wound up with the best seat in the house: In front of my tv. Considering the ill health of the 9/11 first responders(HEROES ALL), I think I made the right descision.
on october 24 of this year will mark ten years sinces Hudsons was taken down many said it was for the better so the city could reuse the land and build something new and what is there now? A parking lot d-town has taken down many of its land marks in the name of so called "progress" i feel that all the blank lots in city just shows a lack of forward thinking Hudson could have been saved so could have many other places like the Tuller hotel
What a nice city! Make this the promo video for Detroit! Come to Detroit everyone! Where multiculturalism works! Come and see the burnt out buildings and the tacky Heidelberg Project bullshit - and get shot while you're at it for being white! What a Great time for all!
I was thinking about going downtown to watch this in person but then thought about the dust cloud filled with nearly a hundred years of mold, mildew, asbestos and God knows what else and decided to stay home and watch it on tv.
The best part about this whole demolition like someone already said was there's still nothing there... Hudson's was brought down to promote future developement on the site as well as the Statler and there's still nothing.....
Hopefully Quicken announces their move downtown soon and fills in the empty lots on the west side of GCP and restores the UA buidling...
Either way Detroit is coming back slowely but surely and it's great to see....
And there's still a block sitting there vacant. Tell me, why couldn't they have put Compuware there? Campus martius could have been done without this happening, too.
I'm glad they knocked it down, Compuware and Campus Martis Park was a nice replacement. Detroit is slowly making a coming back. No sense in holding on to old decaying buildings if no one wants to invest in fixing them up. Now old Tiger Stadium needs the same fate.
They have no idea what they just destroyed. Its something that can never be replaced. To anyone knows even a slight bit of the JL Hudsons story will know what Im talking about. It was more then a building.

It certainly was more than just a building. I barely remember it as I was only a toddler when it closed but I realize its importance in history.

The crowd cheers, but the building kicks up a dust storm. Hudson's had the last laugh. LOL.
