Israel exists--like it or not, it is a nation. A neighboring place is shooting rockets and mortar shells into their land to make it unliveable and the response was a war. Wherever you live, would you want your country doing less to protect its citizens? If the goal is to stop the attacks then the military action had to be extensive.
