  • The kea at the end was hunting a muttonbird chick, which is a type of sea bird.

  • i live in wanaka nz south island ,firstly that was its own chick it was letting out of the nest, and yes the are smart ,a farmer i know saw five keas heard a solo sheep on a cliff top and walk forward together as a group until the sheep freaked out and fell off the cliff then all the keas flew down and got stuck into it ,farmer was pissed off as she was too far away to stop the buggers, and yes they will wreak your shit hard ,but only the expensive gear as they know this will piss you off haha!!

  • Intelligent little guys. :3

  • Bwahahaha! The Keas are like... you underestimate me, now give me a better challenge!

  • cool................

  • Actually they are THE smartest bird. They like eating anything fatty or starchy - bread, hot chips and hash browns - all found regularly on ski fields - are common attractions. Their favourite drink is beer

  • @PhysicalsimForever id say level pegging with the Raven

  • Why does it have chess reflection on its eyes?

  • they like chewing rubber. This means they attack windscreen-wipers and car tyres which pisses everybody off

  • now this is something my mind cannt chew, just wow

  • Stuff those little bastards in cages and sell them for $20.00 each.

  • Yeah I named my username after these little guys. Why you might ask? Well that is simple.... they are badass.

  • so these parrots are actually predators? ithought parrots exclusively eat vegitables/nuts etc

  • What's really awesome is watching them tear into a live sheep.

  • LOL :)

  • we have a kea at work and everytime i clean the pond he stands infront of the door so i cant get out and thehn when i go get out he runs over and throws the hose out so i ahve to go back in and put it back in the pond lol

  • 2:05 what was that ?

  • @rosn73 Baby bird.

  • the one with the glass tube was trained

  • It's not instinct, it's their natural curiosity they are born with. It's just like humans learn: By playing around with things, we gradually figure out how they work.

  • smarter than some of my former classmates at high school

  • Most of Birds can construct there home and rule

But our retard can suck or fallen and the sit

one of most bad case is mao

    LoL

  • I think it's awesome because thats my name, Kea! ( I am serious, it is.)

  • i saw a kea in a zoo and couldnt belive how clever this bird is

  • @hannes15555555555 what zoo?

  • @shinglehillclimber88

it was the zoo willhelma in stuttgart, germany!

they have got 2 or 3 of them

  • @hannes15555555555 lol cool

  • looks pretty fkn smart to me

  • i like these birds. Just recognized their sound when i was visiting local zoo. Afterwards i was hoping to see some "real-life-kea" and found this one. Love this bird, what a smartass!! :) really impressive

  • Wow ah dorable bird!!!!! X

  • They are really intelligent! Amazing parrots but their beak looks really intimidating! I still preferred my Black Capped Conure, Kacy which look much less harmless :D

  • "is this instinct or intelligence" not "intelligent" as you have written out of context and only an un intelligent person could as that question.

    blatently intelligent. nice vid

    k

  • definitely intelligence!

  • Wow! Very intelligent.

    Where?

    Puzzles learned.

  • smarter then some of the people i know

  • in the few 10 years, the population of these birds falled 50% thx humans : says the Kea

  • Yay a newzeland bird. woop d doo.

  • @Jizzem66 Yay a jaded user on youtube. woop d doo.

  • definitely intelligent.

kea is one of the most smartest birds ever. almost the same intelligence of a monkey

  • @gordon4456ex

Crow-birds (Ravens, crows, magpies, etc) are at least equally as smart as chimpansees, actually. And these kea parrots seem to be as smart as, or smarter than, crow-birds.

  • @Anarkiados Corvids, is the word you're looking for I think :)

  • @gordon4456ex

    lol agreed

  • @gordon4456ex

    Dolphins, chimpanzee, whales and kea.

Followed by octopus, pigs, elephants, crows, parrots and rats.

    Followed by dogs.

  • @moodswyng followed by cats and then followed by dogs

  • @KlubDonnerstag really? are cats smarter?

  • @moodswyng Cats don't listen to commands and quite the contrary, they think they are the ruler of the house and sometimes they are.

But not only that makes them smarter than dogs or horses.

  • @gordon4456ex Actually, I think I would go as far as saying this is the 2nd most intelligent animal on the planet, not too far behind us (certainly not as far as chimps).

Think about it this way, we got to where we are by:

    a. being smart and innovative

    b. learning language, so we can pass on knowledge

    c. co-operating.

    d. hunting, and eating high calorie, fatty organs, like brain and bone marrow

This bird is smart enough to figure shit out right away (only humans can do that), it co-operates..

  • @gordon4456ex ... which means it doesn't show pride and egotistical behavior. It's also curious, has tremendous power for its size, and yet it still has the dexterity to use its beak and feet to grasp and manipulate. The only downside I see is that this parrot doesn't have such great vocal chords, like real parrots; it could have helped them create language, and really kick start this thing.

  • @gordon4456ex and smarter than some humans

  • @gordon4456ex that means more than some humans hehe

  • @gordon4456ex also one of the naughtiest!!

  • @METALIST1989 awesome, cause rats are awesome.

  • @METALIST1989 stupid humans... monkeys with clothes

  • @InsanimationStudios not all humans are niggers

  • @METALIST1989 Pideons are the only birds that are called "rats with wings". Oh, and when I said "stupid humans.... monkeys with clothes" I wasn't talking about the average intellegance to advanced group, only irritatingly dumb people, oh, and that's a very racist thing you said, Cracker.

  • Ironiccliche, think about it like this: There are about 60 species of native New Zealand birds that are now extinct. The kea is pretty much the only species smart enough to hate us (other than the Haast's Eagle, which used to awesomely pick up Maori children and fly away with them), and its totally deserved on our part.

  • Kusun Kafazi basen Insandan daha zekali;)

    Paylasim icin tesekkürler cok

    ilginc bir yapim.

  • ha ha looks pretty smart to me

  • WOW!!!!!

  • i have seen this when it was on tv

    very smart birds

  • mannnn, i wanna see more animal intelligence. have us some sentient companions on this planet.

    ^^

  • i got a parrot

  • Eurgh these birds are so annoying... sure very smart but so destructive.

  • smart.

  • at 1:45 if your reading this comment out there then your the one they pull out of the hole....................

    haha lol im just kidding

  • Amazing!!!!!

  • poor alex that's sad

  • Looked like a rabbit. Keas are pretty large. We saw one jumping on a library bus once and trying to eat the rubber around the steps.

  • what was the animal in the hole at 2:15 I really couldnt see clearly

  • damn I mean 2:10

  • they were chicks of another bird. Yes they're omnivorous

  • It was most likely a shearwater chick, which is a bird. The Hutton's Shearwater breeds in NZ high country which is where Keas inhabit also.

  • thanks I checked and it indeed looks similar.

  • Truly magnificent birds. I saw them up at the snow when I was skiing in NZ last week. They seem to hang around car parks and buildings at the ski fields, particularly when people leave food scraps around, whether that's on the ground or in a bin where they also also fish out any food.

  • They're also horribly strong!

  • evolved from dinosaurs

  • From what then?

  • aah.... I thought it was a scientific discussion, sorry for the misunderstanding. *backs away*

  • If you don't want to "get into that" don't post misleading information. stating that you don't believe in evolution is your buisness but if you say stuff like that some kid might actually believe it.

Just in case, you don't take into account casual mutation and variation, and natural selection.

  • you know you're the ignorant type of person who purposely tries to get on my nerves by saying "some kid might actually believe it". well guess what? YOU'RE WRONG! By the way, evolving from a fucking dinosaur to a small bird is NOT casual mutation... casual mutation is when a bird is born with a blue feather instead of a green one ect....

  • ""some kid might actually believe it". well guess what? YOU'RE WRONG!"

    ...thank God ;)

  • Intelligent little things..

It's not instinct because the problems are being solved and they are very different problems...it is completely problem solving intelligence..

  • Turkish? The language I mean..

  • We could use some of these guys in middle management.

  • They make a lot of toys for parrots like that. They're called foraging toys. It's definably intelligence since they have to figure out the puzzle.

  • holy shit was that a rabbit at 2:09 - 2:12

  • Baby seabird of some kind. I don't think New Zealand has rabbits.

  • yes

  • OMFG THIS BIRD IS GODLY!!! and btw, another super smart anomal is the indonesian mimic octopus, its on youtube watch it, these animals are smart as h$^&!

  • The Octopus isn't that inteligent, its very uniqe because of its skin and organs, but it only tries to Mimic, thats Instinct.

  • Wow they are so powerful, even stronger than Crows, I would love to go and see in person.

  • sadgreen, LMAO I don't think scare crows for Keas are going to work if the birds have such a natural propensity for curiosity and destructiveness.

  • It was sarcasm

  • sadgreen, they most likely have the band on the Kea's leg for the purpose of keeping track of it's locations. It gives scientists useful information if another person finds the banded animal too, because the person who found the animal can contact the bander (person who banded the bird) and say "hey I found a bird you banded. My location is....the bird's condition is..." You get the picture.

  • The Kea seems to have a band on its leg, meaning thats its either a pet (and has been trained to do the trick) or its being tracked by scientists (to remember which is which).

  • Comment removed

  • he has band cause they are close to extinct (bout 10 000 of them in world) so they have to be marked and its true they are so smart, they even beat dolphins and monkeys in tests

  • Wow, never new Keas are considered THAT intelligent. That should be a reason on its own why they should be a protected species.

Although intelligence can sometimes not always be beneficial

  • You're right about the fact that intelligence isn't always beneficial. Just take a look at us humans. I think we can be considered the most intelligent form of life on this planet and yet, there's people who hate other people because of the colour of their skin or other people, who have extreme religious beliefs and are killing other people in the name of their fanatic beliefs. We have rapists, child molestors, murderers, war mongers, etc. No, intelligence is not always beneficial.

  • From the standpoint of humans as a species none of these things has had any impact on our success. We're the dominant species on every continent. And it's only because of our intelligence that we can create morals and consider things like murder, rape, etc (things not at all uncommon among animals) as bad.

  • @evilpika7 Not realy, insects rule the world, it's impossible for us to hunt them to extinction, their simple bodies allow them to survive radiation amounts we can't, they can reproduce in the thousands in about a week, and they are small. so we are more advanced, but they were here before the dinosaurs, and are here to stay.

  • @InsanimationStudios I have to give you that. Insects are more successful by several definitions of "dominant species". Hell, mice, rats, and several other animals that we've spread to other continents could give us a run for our money.

  • Fail. Hating other people because of the colour of their skin has not intelligence involved. As the one who is killing people in name of his fanatic beliefs.

  • there endaegered so im gessing is being tracked there really smart to

  • Is this the only parrot that shows such destructive behaviour in the wild?? I thought only tame parrots could become destructive (when spoiled ofcourse).

Im refering to the birds destructive behaviour based on other videos posted on youtube

  • A parrot that eats sheep, sick!

Why would they ban Keas from getting shot at if they were eating peoples sheep? I mean now they need to put up scarekea or something? I mean what on earth is going on ?

Next thing you know, vampire Keas roaming the night, challenging the authority of vampire bats.

  • that wasnt a sheep it was a baby bird ive seen this ep on animal planet hosted by that david guy

  • Okay but I was talking about this parrot in general. There are some videos on youtube of this parrot eating sheep while they are alive.

  • Yes, keas have been seen eating sheep. According to research, Keas developed high curiousity as an adaptive mechanism for survival. That is, they try everything and anything that looks like it can be eaten. This is especially useful in an alpine area where there is snow a lot of the year and not a lot to eat. New Zealand does not have any large predators (except those introduced) so you often see dead sheep in a pile left to rot by a farmer. It is natural that a kea would try eat it.

  • Thanks for the extra insight, thesmifs.

  • Are they also called Snow Parrots?

  • me 2

  • these animals are interesting, quite smart birds, would like to see a competition between a kea and a crow, crows are pretty smart as well, they can even count, not as good as human can, but both animals keas and crows are impressive

  • i love kea

  • Omg much intelligent than me -.- very frustrating :((

  • keas are little evil strong birds

  • my name is kea too, awesome:D:D

  • Sadly, their smarter than some people I run across at work lol.

  • Am i remembering this right?....Years ago I saw a tv piece about some cattle in NZ who were being attacked by some unknown animal. The farmer or rancher had said that something at night was cutting the flesh on the cattles backs open and in the daytime he would find them all bloody. So they set up a night vision camera, taped it and found it was these kea birds that were doing it. The commentator said that they were actually drinking the blood to sustain themselves. Was that just bunk?

  • Yea it happens when one of the keas tastes the blood of sheep then they just keep doing it;. farmers used to shoot them til it became illegal.

  • i love those birds

  • That wasn't a penguin that was a sometype of water gull which i forgot the name of..but i have the dvd of birds where that scene came from.Keas are one of the 2 parrot species that are omnivorous.

  • Whats the other parrot species?

  • it looks like it pulled out a baby penguin. There are penguins that live in the south island, and their babies look like little brown furballs and they stay in burrows all day.

  • AMAZING

  • This is a very smart animal for sure !!!!!

  • awesome, pretty smart...this is my new favorite animal, lol...not just because its smart though

  • my name is kea.... weird

  • kia ora!

i luv kea's there's a pair at hamilton zoo that are just beautiful!

  • Probably both. The Kea's memory seems to be better attuned than tropical parrots who have access to their food all the time. Parrots in general are very smart animals.

By the way, what did the Kea pull out at the last scene? A dead baby ground owl? O.O

  • What a smart bird

  • these are really smart birds and i cant helop to relate that the other smartest bird on earth, the raven from northern canada is also from a similar cold climate, perharps the environment may have a strong effect on shaping intelligence.

  • The grey parrot is also one of the most intelligent, and is from tropical climes, and ravens exist in a lot of places, including Mexico, and here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'd question the climate correlation.

  • can keas be bought as pets?

  • No. They are a legally protected species. They are also very large and strong birds and they enjoy destroying things. They are kept in public aviaries and zoos however.

  • lol when i walked the milford track some poor person left their boots outside.. fool.. needless to say they were no longer wearable in the morning. love these things. theyr vain to. we were outside homer tunnel and we stopped to take a photo and as soon as we got the camera out one came up to us and opened its wings... it was strange.

  • Most people say that the african grey parrot is the smartest in the world, but there is a lot of evidence that these are at least as smart. Just not so talkative.

  • A british study a few years ago claimed that pound for pound, the Kea was the smartest animal on the planet... fwiw

  • I believe it.....smarter that my cat!!

  • At Arthur's Pass past the Acquaduct last Saturday during a storm I pulled up to take some photos and one of these birds came up to me and gave me an 18kt gold earring! Obviously stolen from someone else! It flew in when I pulled up with my car and dropped it at my feet and I have a photo to prove it. I am now wearing it. I am from Australia and had never seen these birds before until a friend in Christchurch told me all about them! Cheeky fellas.

  • it wanted payment in food for the treasure I'm sure

  • I wanted to feed him but there was a sign saying: DO NOT FEED THE KEA.....felt a bit sorry for him as it was raining quite heavily. But then again, a friend told me she has seen a gang of them at Arthur's Pass wait outside while one goes inside, distracts the shopkeeper and steals a bag of sweets to share....cunning and intelligent to boot! I am still wearing the earring and love telling the tale!

  • in many ways these birds and other birds are smater then higher primates.

  • We have these at our zoo now.

  • Just how smart is a kea? They are smart as other parrots.

  • CoyoteJack2, it was actually a muttonbird, not a penguin, I think.

  • These things are way too smart.

  • Smartest animal in the world for the win!

  • SMART bird

  • Wow, that is amazing! Gotta feel bad for the baby bird, though...

  • oh man these birds are cool but sooo desctructive! lol.. and way too confident :P gotta love em tho!

  • This is a great video thanks for posting I spend a lot of time with kea and they are wonderfull until they shred your tent/slings/boots/pack even then I still have fond spot for these half kilo gorrilas with a beak.

A shame it now appears the New Zealand governments department of conservation has accidentally poisoned close to the entire population of them in New Zealand only 5000 left.

  • Is it a mutton bird chick being pulled out?

  • pretty sure it was or another flavour of shearwater.

  • the bird it pulled out of the ground was a penguin, a baby one still with its down

  • benguins live under grounds ????

damn i thought they make nests on the beach

  • like fucking mole-penguins xD "whats that in the yard, OMG a penguin going 20 km/h under ground xD

  • Parrots like the kia in many ways are superiors in intellingence to higher primates

  • What did the kea pull out of the ground at the end? clearly some kind of baby bird, another of it's own species?

  • Kea The world's only mountain parrot

  • hahah so funny

  • Absolutely intelligent! Big birds are clever, no doubt.

  • Most, if not all animals utilize logic for without it many would no learn how to get food.

  • the thing is they have done these tests with many different animals including other birds. for most of them it took months to do this but these birds did it straight away

  • Does anyone know what language this is in?

  • TÜRKÇE (Turkish)

  • I love these birds. They are underestimated in they're intelligence. One sort of birds is more intelligent than monkeys, because the could recognize themselve in a mirror.

But these keas are crazy aswell. In the zoo of my hometown they often played dead to trick the visitors. But the staff of the zoo knows this trick already and has to calm the visitors *g*

  • Of course it's not instinct. Where in the wild would Kea parrots come across garbage cans with something ontop of them? No way that's instinct; that's street-smarts.

  • Yes, this is ideal

  • oh i saw the whole documentation, and its so unbelieveable! i love keas =) but i never would let my car outside the garage hehe
