  • To remind you, while the writers were on strike, both Colbert and Stewart wrote their own material. It was some of the best I've seen, and I came to love and appreciate them even more. They supported the writers AND stayed on the air.

  • wtf

  • whats the song called?

  • these shows didn't stop during the writer strike.

all the conan , john stewart episodes were made during the writer strike. i didn't miss an episode of either of the 3 in that time.

  • Note: This video was made during the writers strike of Nov 2007 to Feb 2008 when Colbert/Stewart were forced off the air.

  • ? Maybe I missed something but when did they ever go off air?^^; sorry I just started really watching both of these and I know they're on the air now so...

  • i love the picture of them from 0:59-1:04

  • Nice video you put together. By the way billwambold. You idiot. He enunciates report like his last name. Silent "T". It was funny all the times Colbert made fun of his writers, and yes the Stewart, Colbert, Obrien fight was genius.

  • colbert spelled with silent t is his characters version lol when its with the t its his actual person thats why when stephan was on o brians show he was like who are u colber or colbert u should watch the charlie rose interview google it

  • I thought they were still pretty funny when they were working without writers. Stephen Colbert made Huckabee, Conan Obrien made Colbert, Jon Stewart made Conan, and it turns out Conan delivered Stephen and Jon. Hilarious...

  • I am sorry

I guess I support the writers

But in their contract is CLREARY states that they do not get any money for internet profif

so now they want money for something that is not in their contract

  • well yes, that's why they went on strike. If they should be getting a profit from their stuff on the internet, they need a new contract that reflects that.

  • 2:50.... thats so sad

  • the Colbert/Stewart/O'brien fued was genious.....all done during the strike

  • the writer-less colbert was actually pretty good

  • @BlandVideo I highly agree. The Colbert Show was just as good without writers. And I think Colbert himself must have come up with almost all of that material. He's good at making the best of a bad situation

  • What's the clip from at 2:28?

  • It's from an old Daily show segment called "Connecticut School of Broadcasting"

  • thanks

  • The strike is over! Congratulations to the WGA on their new contract. Way to stand up to big media!

  • Colbert, you're a genius man, so happy to get a chunk of your multi-dimentional character. Thanks for Steward for bringing you to light.

  • the LA TIMES says 2/3/08...tentative contract reached...

...final contract could be presented to the Writers Guild of America board as early as Friday, ...The 3-month-old strike is expected to end once the board approves the contract.

YAY!!! Light at the end of the tunnel!

  • Hey! My icon! I SUES U 4 A BILLYUN DOLLAZ NOW.

    :P Great vid!

  • Thanks Snowden! As one of the Colbert Nation heroes from whom I may have borrowed (pilfered) images, I salute you and offer my gratitude for w/o heroes like you I'd have no content and no inspiration! :) p.s. I enjoy your work too.

  • For anyone who is saying that the strike should be broken stop being so heartless. The basis of equality and opportunity in the United States is workers rights. If business owners and corporate bigwigs can treat writers like crap they can treat any worker like crap.

I know it's hard to go without your favorite TV show, but it's for a good cause. You could be reading a book or going for a walk or hanging out with friends. You don't NEED to be watching TV. Support the Strike, be an American.

  • We support the writers and hope they will be back at work soon doing what they do best. We miss them and support one of the final union frontiers in America. Writing is an American craft that can't be outsourced.

  • The latest is that the moguls are back at the table and seriously want to make a deal. Insiders predict that the strike will be over by mid February. Here's hoping they are right.

  • Seriously, what the hell? All they want is more money, because they get none (in fact they lose money) every time someone downloads their show from iTunes, for instance. THEY made it, THEY get no money.

  • Thank goodness they're back! Writers or no writers, it's good to see them again. And this gives them both the opportunity to do their *own* stuff, rather than rely on a script to be funny. A bit of a test, if you will.

(Not that neither of them is funny, but it'll be interesting to see what they come up with all on their own.)

  • they should have 1 hour show and host it together.!!!

  • First great comment I've seen in a long time! =D

  • From what I understand, the google youtube suit is being used as an argument (regarding online value) by the WGA for the AMPTP to pay up but it is not a particular issue on their list of residual demands. I completely agree with the WGA's position (hence this vid) but fair use content on youtube doesn't shaft anybody. In fact with close to 28K views, I would like to think in my small way I tried to help spread the good word. Fingers crossed than it all ends soon.

  • actually, vigwig, it could end up being about youtube. You never know where new media revenue is going to come from, and there have been talks between youtube and the networks to allow copyrighted material here for remuneration. That's exactly why it's so important they get this hammered out and make sure that if and when youtube starts paying the studios to be able to host those shows, the writers dont get shafted.

  • anyone know what song this is?

  • It's credited at the end of the vid. Annie Lennox singing "Saddest song I got" from BARE.

  • brings tears to my eyes

  • Brum... Well if you watched the show last night you'll know that Jon and Steven are currently not too happy about this strike bit. And I'm pretty sure they're fed up with the WGA's emotional baggage and Viaccom's lack of support in the situation. I'm not sure I 100% with the WGA either...

  • ur right and im not 100% either i know they want and MIGHT deserve more pay but they seem to get payed a lot already and i really really miss my shows like the daily show!!!

  • i WANT STEPHEN BACK : (

  • GIVE THE WRITES MORE MONEY!!!

  • The strike is about many issues, NONE of which include youtube.

  • Thank you! Much appreciated.

  • Wonderful! What a great action for the writers! You're so right about the right winged media! Do you notice the radio hardly ever plays Barbra Streisand anymore?! Thanks for the addresses at the end!

    Just wonderful!

  • Note this my channel and not a forum or a personal soapbox for repeated bitching, I will block offenders.

  • The right wing media must be thrilled. They will use this to try and destroy Stewart/Colbert's reputations. Meanwhile the AMPTP continues to price fix and collude and refuses to negotiate. Why is no one is calling them on their tactics?

  • They were "forced to return" i.e., possibly facing lawsuits against Jon/Stephen for not only breach of contract, but loss of revenue, etc. ... the studios could be suing for millions if not hundreds of millions and cancel the shows entirely.

  • I can see in my head how many jokes Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart would have made about the destruction of the CIA tapes if they were on now...

  • Stewart produces Colbert's show though Stewart ruined his credibility with the 04 presidential election and his clear liberal views. He never really let that affect his show but people are more entertained with the egomaniac colbert, a liberal pretending to be conservative.

  • Writers want to get paid when their show airs and then again when it shows up on the internet? Is this really what they are striking about? It's not gonna happen. Some one should have told these guys to hold off on the strike until after Christmas, now their holidays will suck.

  • I hope they hire funnier writers.

  • No it doesn't peapod. They are being FORCED back w/o their writers to avoid wholesale layoffs of their entire staff and the possibility of show contract cancellations. It's not so simple and a very tough call. At least if they get on the air they can stick it to the AMPTP nightly. Besides it's not the WGA or Stephen/Jon who are at fault, it's the AMPTP who refuses to negotiate and are putting them (and their staff) in this impossible position.

  • Its not an impossible position, you cross the picket line, you're a SCAB! It IS that simple. They get rich while the workers get shit. Nice going.

  • It's not that simple - either/or, B&W thinking and throwing around epithets like scab doesn't get anyone anywhere. I will reserve judgement until the facts behind their decision are out.

  • Maybe you can reserve judgement until after the holidays. Then you won't have to think about all the writers on strike right now and their families. That would just be B&W thinking I guess.

  • Judgement will and can be given at any time.

Let's not play semantics, and decide on common ground - We all want these ingenious and hilarious shows back.

  • Another put it well about this very sorry situation..."slamming Stewart and Colbert is like shooting the hostages." I am on board w/ the writers' demands (why else would I bother w/ these vids - they take a lot of my unpaid time). I am, however, NOT on board in vilifying those who don't deserve it.

  • Yeah you say you support the writers demands. But what I'm hearing is that Stewart and Colbert are more important. And that this strike is OK just as long as it doesn't damage their image. They are not hostages, nor are their hands tied. You don't cross the picket line, while your brothers and sisters are holding signs in the street. That's insulting.

  • Correct me if I am wrong, but historically the strikes that have gained the most for their participants are those in which *everyone* shut the whole stinking apparatus down. Like Paris in '68 before it all petered out. Still the generation of '68 made reforms that are still here today. The problem is that *everyone* needs to shut the shit DOWN. No gaffers, no key grips, no actor, cameramen, no nothing.

  • Which is to say that they only way everyone, including the whiny person who complains because he only makes 8 bucks an hour, will *ever* have a better life is if we all STRIKE EN MASSE (which means together, at the same time). If we all walked out one day, who could be fired?!? The problem is that no one wants to stick together. Everyone is too busy covering their own asses. I think no matter what, it is a SHAME what JS and SC are doing (going back).

  • Americans aren't going to wake up until they are all working at Walmart and dying with no health insurance while housing and feeding their 30 year old kids who can't read.

  • arent we already doing that?

  • So what is happening with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert going back to work without writers? Can somebody please explain that to me because doesn't that make my favorite political people SCABS?

  • Only if they go back and write for the show. Colbert is a genious Stewart is overated. His show will be toast once Bush is out of office.

  • Live the writers alone, they have every right to strike. If you are suffering so much, then write a letter, give your money, or just plain read a book. Who knows you might get an IQ point or two.

  • I just want my shows back, i'll support whoever is needed to get them too. Since this stupid strike happend 24 has been postponed!!!!!! FUCK!

  • you got that completely wrong

  • You are SUFFERING?!?!? Please give me a fucking break. People shouldn't have the right to fight to be paid what they deserve because *you* are hurting? What? Do you not have friends? Can you not read? Go for a run? Do you have no hobbies? Do you just sit on your ass 24/7 in front of the boob-tube? Please give me a break. Why don't you sign up for Iraq so you can get things in perspective. Suffering! Geez.

  • We miss a bit of TV, for struggling writers, it's about paying bills. I want the Daily Show and Colbert Report back, but I want the writers paid a fair wage. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the corporate greed so often lampooned on the shows.

  • Oh, poor baby. Here, let me play you a tune on the world's smallest violin.

  • OMG, I am so Emo.

    That was sooo good!

  • My day is not complete without Jon Stewart.

  • The only one I miss watching is Jon Stewart. I had my cable turned off.

  • omg are you telling me they don't write there own show?!?!?!?!?!

  • Shh. . .your ignorance is showing.

  • My heart is breaking. I miss Stephen and Jon so much! I cried the first few weeks of the strike! IT'S NOT FAIR!!!

But I wish the writer's best of luck. Gosh, there's so much news to be reported and no fake anchorman comedian to say it.

So I'm watching Jim Gaffigan, Jeff Dunham, and Stephen Lynch for now. They're really funny and help lift my Colbert/Stewart withdrawal depression.

  • my problem is what about the other people who create the shows besdies the writers i mean come on they need support too

the writers do need to be better funded but still

and if you want a laugh watch Craig Ferguson hes still doing live shows cause he writes his own stuff

  • From the LA Times...

"The hosts of "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" have quietly worked with Comedy Central to ensure that the network has continued to pay the shows' 200 nonwriting staff members during the work stoppage.." according to people familiar with the situation.

  • Social Security just cut my disability from $700 per mo. to $135 per mo. I have a family of four. I wish I could stike. If it were not for ebay and my comisions made, we would be homeless. God is good he will protect you. Strike on!

  • You can fight that, Larigraham. My sister did, because she has three kids and she's a single mother, and she won.

And I want the writers to take all the time they need to get what they want. Sure I miss the shows that I watch, but if the writers come back with more pay their happiness is going to be reflected in the quality of the new episodes.

  • It surely will not be reflected on the quality of the episodes, don't bee naive. If they manage to pull this, cheap, greedy and selfish trick, they will most likely try and get more , demand more, and perhaps obtain more. It's not like if they work for 8 dollars per hour. They get pay thousand of dollars. They pretty much are asking to get pay more so they can get their beach house.

  • You're right, Viacom needs the money more than the writers. Greedy workers.

  • i agree they pay thousands of dollars a year and they want more why can they just be happy with what they have and get back to writing cuz i'm getting tired of seeing theses crappy repeats

  • 2 great shows /

  • God! When is the strike going to be over? There's no way that I'm watching re-runs of these shows. It's like watching old news. It just dosen't work. I've been watching Will & Grace at that time now.

  • I'm with you! Last night there was a live Colbert Report fund raiser at a small NYC venue (UCB). A viewer who attended reported that Colbert talked about performing the show for the past 29 days in his garage to his washing machine. He gave a speech about the strike and how everyone wishes they were back at work, but he was happy he had the chance to work with his writers that night because he felt "emasculated without them".

  • Great video! Thank god for YouTube and the Comedy Central web site with videos of all the old shows. This sucks! I NEED these guys and miss Jon every night, thinking how funny he would be making fun of whatever dumb thing Bush did or said on that day.

  • I miss the colbert report!!!

  • what if this strike pushes past the election? what are we to do then?? No indecision 2008?? *pops a xanax*

  • *pops 3 xanax, then some purp*

Don't worry people, I'll have a vid out soon

  • a bit of overkill. I really really miss the show and all but this is like someone whos lost a loved one wud make.

  • I notice a lot of the repeats (if not all of them) are from July/August, I figured they'd be from September/October at least. Surprisingly, I never put two and two together. The WGA Strike and Repeats I mean.

  • AHHHH Republican Debate and no Comic Relief!!!!! very sad :(

  • every weeknight i would turn my TV on just waiting at the edge of my seat to see what funny jokes they would do. Now, It's- its just not there! We want our boys back!

  • When did Stephen call Jon and say he wants to come home?

  • -balancedbreakfast-

That clip is from an old Daily show segment, "The Connecticut School of Broadcasting."

  • Happy Birthday Jon where ever you are!

  • Here's hoping the writers get a fair deal and are able to keep us laughing (and informed) soon through the presidential campaign.

  • i wonder if george bush's writers are on strike too? or is this strike not going on in israel as well?

  • Go back to your cave.

  • What infuriates me is that the corporate suites at Viacom didn't hesitate to sue Youtube for using their content (which was how I discovered Stewart and Colbert, therefore free advertisement.) Yet they won't pay the people who create the material from what they claim it's worth online.

  • They need to stay on strike as long as they need too, I miss The Daily Show and Colbert Report but these guys deserve their cuts.

  • I miss them so much!!! Why are the mean men keeping Jon and Stephen from us? Why? WHY!?!?

  • Strike talks resume Monday, let's hope for an agreement.

  • support your troops!

  • Stand strong and proud writers and please, protect Colbert and Stewart and come home safe. We love you.

  • what really sucks is that i JUST started watching the Colbert Report like, 2 days before the strike!!! come one stupid rich people, give the writers what they want!!!!! they deserve it cuz w/out them, they shows don't exsist!!

  • Man it bugs me when people are against the strike and then invoke the name of capitalism! This IS capitalism--if you don't like what they're paying you then you strike. I am a capitalist and I support the strike. Great job on the video, we miss you Stewart and Colbert!

  • Right on. The mistake you speak of has to do with the fact that unions are often seen as a communist inspired practice, because they're not individualistic (on the whole) and thus mistakenly thought as not being capitalistic. In fact, workers' rights, unions and fighting big money are very much a part of a healthy capitalist society.

  • foxdragoon!...if u ever worked in a union u would know that the company u work for iz 1 big cash cow and ur jus getting 1 drop of milk from itz nipple...u idiot!!!...walmart makes billionz...and they pay their average worker chump change...soundz kinda like communizm to me, huh??? bwah hahaha!

  • BIZZYfob: When you learn to type a coherent sentence that makes sense; uses capitalization; doesn't use '...' as periods and commas; doesn't use numbers as words; etc. then get back to me. I would love to discuss your concerns.

  • ...sorry my friend, but, if u didnt understand wut i said, then, ur where "they" want u...in a box!...lol

  • This video made me cry! Great work and I love the song!

  • HEAR NEW WRITERS WE WANT YOU BACK /cry

  • I really miss you, hang in there! your fans are with you, we support you! we need to know what advertisers to encourage into supporting the writers!

  • stephen i love you!

    nice job with the video

  • I really miss the Daily show and Jon Steward.

  • Nice job, Vigwig. It says what we're all thinking and feeling. Love the final image!

  • Ditto:)

  • Keep it up writers. You have my support.

  • This is actually perfect timing for our corporate overlords to shut down creativity and political critique. When the economy tanks these are the folks who rile up the rabble. It's no wonder they want darkness over the land to keep the little folk in their places, hoping, wishing and making sappy fan videos pleading with them. urgh.

  • Stop blaming the Union... It is not the Union's fault, the rich bastard doesn't want to share the wealth generated by the work of these guys...

It is great to see people working together to achieve a common goal...

Keep adding comments and sharing these videos!!!

  • It's really nice of Jon Stewart because he wants to pay the writers out of his own pocket. Which is a really large pocket by the way.

    (1.5 million)

  • Yes, support the writers!! Thank you, vigwig!

  • When you get outsourced you'll change your tune.

  • So, docmoriarti, what's your position regarding the pay cut that the writers took years ago? Should they continue to acquiese? Or should they move to get their fair share of the money?

And are you REALLY a criminal mastermind?

  • There's nothing about unions that is necessarily at odds with capitalism. The job market we have here is more like theivery than capitalism. Pay sucks, conditions suck, there is very little room for a climmb up the ladder without crooked ethics. Good for the writers for demanding fair practices.

  • ...And the people that actually do the work or, in this case, write the things that entertain you. People keep leaving that part out, for some reason.

  • Film/TV/Theatre would not exist without the written word - the foundation of our art. Cough it up, corporate America. This is America - land of golden dreams. Pave the way, please.

  • I guess you're not a member of the union. Unions protect artists - it has nothing to do with creative process. Unions allow the creative process to flourish by taking away the worry over business and paychecks - hence the word protection. Join the union - if they'll have you.

  • Actually, without writers, there would NOT be other writers, because that means there are NO WRITERS.

They do hire 'other writers' to create shows sometimes. They're called scabs. They're strike-breakers. A company will hire them so that they don't have to give the original workers any rights, and therefore sets everyone back.

Also? You can't 'fire' a union. Sorry.

  • Bravo! This rocks! The "Show Runners", i.e. the guys who both write and produce TV shows, have joined the WGA on the lines. This is historic - a first. Picket lines for The Office went up at 4 AM before cast and crew were due to arrive. When Steve Carrell refused to cross - total shut down. Prod. Cos' hopes for time to drag things out bought by banking episodes - looking pretty shaky now.

    Inspired choice of music, btw.

  • No they don't. If you agree w/ this vid please lend a rating.

  • Wonderful! Feed the writers! Suits don't have to be pigs, do they?
