Perhaps, 'joke' is misapplied here, maybe a parody of some situation, fictional or non-fictional, of a situation I was not aware of back then, it's a British flick, I don't think this even went on the theater circuit of California. I don't know. Maybe, you're parents can give you some feed back, they may be older than I or maybe we might kind of be of the same generation.
@Khultan - it was a big deal to the UK establishment (& Texan later when it infuriated the bible bashers), as God Save The Queen got to number 1 in the record charts but the TV and radio banned it, it was still banned until fairly recently - not officially exactly, but more it'd be completely ignored as if it hadn't happened. that is why this is named Jubilee - it's about the Royal Jubilee year.
i think there's a major in-joke going on cause the latter Crystal Maze guy plays John Dee in this
@JustSomePerson888 Well, I can tell you this, as a juvenile back then, this probably would not have made any sense to me or my peers had we seen this back then.
@Khultan - i think it could best be summed up (if i recall this film right, it's been ages since i saw it) as "no future in England's dreaming", it's like a tour of what the UK became by that point. it's not condeming it obviously, it's more like if you see it from the point of view that Dee is showing the first queen Elizabeth what England is like in the 1970s - and why. those merely just comdemning punk for its looks and sounds didn't get its inevitability, reflection of the real inside here.
@Khultan - also things like (& again i could be wrong here but it's how i see it) 'never trust a hippie' come from how that generation was meant to be growing up in a world that has been put right again, but the 60s failed too - and they got the same shitty reality to live in, with no propects and nothing to do, so they made up their own new movements.
it's the usual. like with rave later - there's the real version, and there's the commercialised lets-make-money-off-them version..
@JustSomePerson888 Yeah, well, with heroin addicted Sid Vicious catching international headlines ( I remember the 1979 news articale when I was a kid living in Moutain View, Ca but even then, I didn't really know who he was or who The Sex Pistols were, it didn't reach my generation) for alledgely knifing his equally smacked out girlfriend in a grimy New York City Hotel (Chelsea) punk rock failed in a miserable way.
@Khultan - oh i'm not saying you are wrong or anything, i completely understand how this is cultural and wouldn't have been known of everywhere, that is the case with tonnes of various styles and movements now too, it'll always be like that. i just meant the 60s failed as they didn't do away with the problem - it's still here, making lies up about reality and forcing us to live in a world it limits artifiically while ruining nature. i'm a hippy really but i like all kinds of music types.
@JustSomePerson888 Well, the 1960s didn't 'fail', the artists/activists of that time generated their message and it's up to the following people to become aware of it and take initiative, such as by voting and/or taking other actions, such as the current Occupy movement, it is legitimate, it took so long to respond to U.S. government/big business corruptions. Look at the big banks, such as Bank Of America, what was that? They were going to charge $5 for an account? Hence, the outrage.
@Khultan - i meant it failed because the current age group in charge of - the likes of what you mention - grew up in the 60s or later, meaning they should be fully aware that urbanising and corporate whoredome etc is wrong - but instead the majority of them continued to live wrongly and made the world even worse in many ways.
same way right now, majority of young are into lies that will make them nothing but know-nothing slaves in the future, passing it to their own children.
@JustSomePerson888 I can agree with that, apart from the California hippie and British punk rock movement, the children/youth of the late 60s New York City were busy in the early 70s responding to the devestation of local and governmental corruption that, perhaps, was more down to earth and galvanizing than any but having the spirit of the two.
@Khultan - NYC had a total punk-type scene of its own, kinda came out of the Velvet Underground, then Stooges etc (i just checked that n Stooges are Michigan, but for me the punk USA scene original is sort of all blended in with one another - also it reminded me, Sex Pistols did a Stooges track too).
@JustSomePerson888 Hmm, actually, I meant the response towards corruption and creative self-affirmation (city/state/national/international) by younger New York City people (most of those New York punk rockers were 21 years of age or above) by way of the NYC subway graffiti movement and it's other disparate elements, mc'ing, dj'ing, cypher rocking (more practical than punk rock, most poor kids can't afford to buy equipment and then learn to use it?)
@JustSomePerson888 At the time in the mid70s, the few times that I caught news featuring NYC, I noticed the subways filled with markings, you see, I grew up in San Francisco (there is no massive subway system here and nobody was writing graf of the magnitude or practice/custom as in NYC) so, really, all that was foreign or met with indifference or incomprehension by older kids (teens) or my peers if they even noticed it at all. In a way, without media, a revolution was happening.
My peers were too young for the Haight-Ashbury seen of the early 70s and still too young for the disco scene but disco music was at the forefront on radio stations, it seems in the continent of the U.S. of A. I'm not too crazy about disco either but I sure wasn't a hater as most Americans it seems. But, that too, I wasn't aware of the dislike for disco music. Those guys and girls were juveniles in the 60s, maybe, but never learned how to dance.
The Ramones, Patty Smith, Iggy & The Stoodges, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and all those others in 1977 were unknown, unrecognized and of no concern to my peers, that's just how it was, I mean, we were bay area juveniles. I still remember catching The Clash interview on KRON Channel 4 and I think it was Mick Jones talking but I had no fucking idea what he or they were about. Yes, I love rock'nroll of the 50s,60s but these guys appeared out of nowhere with the media being no help.
@TheGodParticle It wasn't only Crabs: have you read Adam's autobiography?! Stephanie Gluckmann, his ex-wife 'Eve', Little Nell/Crabs ... (not to mention Adam's earlier stalker-ish overtures towards Jordan, as documented in the early Ants' song 'Send a Letter to Jordan').
@TheGodParticle (btw I'm not 'bro') Adam claimed he used sex to 'self-medicate' his depression...(!) I never knew the women included Nell until I read the book, though...
@Khultan i asked a simple question, since i wasn't born in the 60's or 70's i was wondering someone who was could explain to me why this would be a joke.
@iTeawolf Fair enough, here's a genteel reply then: the whole US east coast punk rock and European (Great Britain) revolution/movement whatever did not seem to have any relevance to San Franciscan juveniles, such as myself, during the mid 1970s. For starters, bay area radio stations refused to play punk rock music, meaning it effectively consigned that genre as unwelcome, therefore 'alien' to my generation....
@Khultan Elvis Presley had died in 1977, and my generation had, at best, a recognition of him maybe through reruns of his Hollywood era days, but the British punk rock made no sense at all (or for that matter American punk rock) to my peers. As I said, these rockers were 20 years olds and up, basically a generation gap amongst young, if you like. Media restriction or downplay of punk rock must've been the case. The death of John Simon Ritche aka Sid Vicious had no impact or recognition factor.
I am trying to find out what music was used in the beginning of Jubilee. I thought it was from Swan Lake. I managed to find the soundtrack but it didn't have any of the classical music that was used. I would be so grateful if you could help.

Stuart Goddard is nothing short of a genius, you should watch his interviews and how well he articulates himself. He is an amazing human being, intelligent, witty and could charm just about anyone.
He has a mental illness (no doubt due to years of visual and actual physical abuse) as anyone would if they were in that situation.
I'm not quite sure who you're accusing of being hypocrits and driving Adam crazy, but I think he's far from a lost and forgotten soul. He still has a lot of fans out there who support him and his struggles with his illness.
it's kinda interesting that Adam in this clip is disinterested in the girl pawing him as much as he is in his video "Beautiful" from his latest album.
which I find makes him even more irresistible... at any frikken age.
@TheCountess09 I saw Adam perform in Newcastle last night. He is still a CLASS act, didn't come across as a lost soul and certainly isn't forgotten. Maybe he was lost 4 years ago, but he has certainly seems to have found himself again since then.
love nell in the vid I've only ever seen her in the rocky horror picture show it's nice to know she played more than just the bitchy groupie in rocky horror (not that i don't like columbia she's actualy my fave character in the movie but she is a bitch)kiss, kiss darlings!!!
