The homeless guy said that paper money is real and plastic money is not, but neither of them is real. "Money" is an idea based on the notion that labor and things can be representational (paper *or* plastic) and trading can thus be accomplished without barter. The only "real" money is labor itself, or that which labor produces for consumption, such as fuel, food, or clothing. Barter allows individuals to operate freely (ie., w/o taxation), and that explains why money came to exist.
It's is never really thought about, how much we don't use our memory banks to store info anymore, and once the latest gadget is lost for ex. cell phones..we can't remember issh..

Barter is a real exchange of goods, so barter is "real" money, but not paper or plastic.
