"Umm" is not moaning, but kind of japanese informal way of answering with a nod like "yeah"," right", "aaha", or whatever.

The polite or formal ways are "Hai" or "Sou desu".

Well not being able to see them or their expressions at the time and just hearing this audible "UMMF!"/"UMM!" off camera makes it all the more unusual to me. I like it though.
