My experient, We can melt ANFO this way but i recomment keep very low fire source or take out frome heat source and ad Al to to it while it's still liquid and stire. Like the wat to make melt casting AN/TNT . I confirm this

Anfo just exploded with enough volume. Even boiling it is also possible but extremely rare explosion. In VietNam Anfo or produced in this way.

#1 finely powdered aluminium can be added to ANFO to increase both sensitivity and energy. however, this step is skipped alot due to cost.

@pyro4869 1: aluminium powder is not required, 2: to detonate it you must have so strong ignitier cause ANFO is very very hard to detonate. 3: i don't known but i never made ANFO, but anfo isn't strong explosive.

I liked your video. I never considered melting this type of composition. I realize some of the advantages, but after reading all of the comments I still have some questions. Is the hot liquid ever poured directly into a borehole? Or is the hot liquid ever poured into a container like tubing or other? What are the main benefits of taking the extra time to melt it? Is there a noticeable difference in power by melting and mixing rather than just mixing at room temperature? Thanks.

the nitrate needs to be heated to drive out any moisture in it, otherwise the fuel oil wont soak in correctly,you will still get an explosion but of a greatly reduced magnitude

the stuff at the mine has already been dried before loading in truck.

@zonecva They use ANFO in quarries in the west. They have a truck with a diesel tank and an Ammonium nitrate hopper on the back. The ingrediants are just pumped to a mixing nozzle and then straight into the blasting hole. No boiling! The IRA let off several ANFO bombs in London. And that was fuel oil and AN mixed with a stick.

I see the point of the Aluminium powder, it raises the Temp of the burn, increases the brisance. But Ammonium Nitrate can break down with heat and explode all on its own. Texas city disaster? Ship full of Ammonium Nitrate exploded due to spontaneous combustion.

You can put fire on anfo safely, anfo only detonates with the mixture of pressure and high temperature or a primer . You can even shoot anfo with a gun and nothing would happen.

@breckenridge21 ANFO is used commercially for mining. If it were too unstable they would not be able to work with it safely. Explosives that can detonate by dropping, or being exposed to fire would present a huge liability. ANFO requires a high energy explosion to set it off. I don't know the chemistry well enough to explain why it requires an explosion I just know it does. I am sure that information is floating around the internet somewhere.

With this process you can make cap sensitive ANFO with a critical diameter of less than 32mm. There´s a interesting patent about it that uses a mix of AN and calcium nitrate, both fertilizer grade.

I think it is better with paraffin wax so the end product is almost non hygroscopic.

I will try to put it on the schedule. I have so many tests to make with some compositions I am trying to improve that it will take some time.

This kind of process is interesting but has some drawbacks, first you have to cook your explosives and it is not suitable for indoor home manufacture in my opinion, second it is not easy to make several kgs with this method and last it will be as weak as ANFO.
