the weight difference had little to do with the outcome of the fight. It had to do with striking from afar, striking in the clinch and ground and pound. Gracie didn't have any of those. His takedowns from the clinch werent exceptional but sudo has judo training, so good luck with that.

The fight was over when the BJJ guy took those knees in the face. I'm amazed that today no knees / elbows are allowed. In this way this competion doesn't allow muay thai to compare to the other arts anymore, as it relies heavily on elbows/knees.

@minotaur313 Many opponents didnt believe in jiu jitsu and didnt train for what the gracies were bringing. Saki believed in jiu jitsu and trained HARD to be able to defend it. He knew the gracies r legit. Also Renzo accepted the pain as punishment for his mistakes and enjoyed it because it humbled him.

No, this is K-1 HERO's, which used PRIDE's rules at the time. Current WAMMA rules established in Ontario ban knees and kicks on a DOWNED opponent, which means anything other than your two feet on the ground, not just all fours. They also ban elbows, but the UFC refuses to join the WAMMA because of the manditory unified title matches, among other reasons.
This is NOT K-1 HERO'S. And K-1 HERO'S did NOT use PRIDE rules. In K-1 HERO'S, soccer kicks and stomps are NOT allowed.
It was probably legal (as seen in Sudo vs Gracie and Fujita vs Sapp) because this event isn't HERO'S but K-1 Romanex, which was K-1's first MMA event. This event will later transform to HERO'S, and I think from there they started coming up with their own rules.
HERO's banned soccer kicks I think when the universal rules were written up. Some of HERO's matches I see it fly (Misaki-Akiyama), and in DREAM and HERO's knees are allowed from a 3-point attack to the head of downed opponent. (Sakurai-Aoki or Tokoro-Cullum for proof)

I do MMA fighting and it depends on if it is an actual fight on the streets or not cause if it is and the attachers know each other nothing is more effective than having one of trhem on the ground in a good headlock to scare of the other one and threatening them
I've never disputed the importance of ground-work. I just hate BJJ. I hate the Gracie family. I hate the fact that they've gotten rich off of ripping off Judo and selling it as something else, I hate that stupid tough guy look that they all constantly walk around with, I hate the blatent cheating, the bullshitting, the steroid abuse, the frat boys who think they're fucking invincible after 5 BJJ classes at the rec centre, Fuck BJJ. I agree with you on the negative image that the earlier family created by some of their actions. They didn't really rip off judo, judo rip itself off. Judo of today is nothing like the original judo. Allot of the younger Gracies, and the guys who trained in Renzo's time and later are really not bad guys. Most of them Study Judo pretty heavily too. Its a media image that has tainted them in some ways. In all fairness they did nothing different from any other martial art, and marketing company.
I think generally, with the exception of the late Ryan Gracie, who was, from what I understand, total scum in both his personal and professional life, most of the current generation are alright. However, what most people don't understand about Judo is that competition format changed for the olympics to prevent any broken shins or arms in front of a live TV audience, but the actual art and training didn't really change much at all. Particularly in practice, where a lot of the teachers
both know everything and still teach it all, not just standing game. Still, I think the Gracies were pretty much out to get rich at all costs in the early days, and they pulled a lot of macho bullshit to top it all off. They were definitely a lot more ruthless about it then many others too. I watched the movie "Red-belt" a while back, and despite being a rather pro BJJ flick, did it strike you as odd that the antagonists were a thinly veiled Gracie family?
if you really look at high level BJJ guys, they train Judo (standup). Allot of the Judo guys are doing the same in BJJ in Japan. You can say what you want, but in reality the level of quality drops significantly in 90% of judo schools when they hit the ground. Judo+BJJ = original Judo.

Looks like gracie was controlling the fight by a slight margin and on his way to a win, but relied too much on his style..and forgot about punching. Good fight.
I have alot more respect for bjj after trying it myself..it's fun and a very good style. It's alot healthier too than boxing for example. Boxing will always be #1 to me but this aint bad.

I think he said that because Royler was small as hell, and technically sound- so he defeated much larger people- it just sucks that he has no take down skills or stand up game, but his ground work is great. I think he scrambles better than any other Gracie out there.

No, this is K-1 HERO's, which used PRIDE's rules at the time. Current WAMMA rules established in Ontario ban knees and kicks on a DOWNED opponent, which means anything other than your two feet on the ground, not just all fours. They also ban elbows, but the UFC refuses to join the WAMMA because of the manditory unified title matches, among other reasons.

This is NOT K-1 HERO'S. And K-1 HERO'S did NOT use PRIDE rules. In K-1 HERO'S, soccer kicks and stomps are NOT allowed.
It was probably legal (as seen in Sudo vs Gracie and Fujita vs Sapp) because this event isn't HERO'S but K-1 Romanex, which was K-1's first MMA event. This event will later transform to HERO'S, and I think from there they started coming up with their own rules.

HERO's banned soccer kicks I think when the universal rules were written up. Some of HERO's matches I see it fly (Misaki-Akiyama), and in DREAM and HERO's knees are allowed from a 3-point attack to the head of downed opponent. (Sakurai-Aoki or Tokoro-Cullum for proof)

I do MMA fighting and it depends on if it is an actual fight on the streets or not cause if it is and the attachers know each other nothing is more effective than having one of trhem on the ground in a good headlock to scare of the other one and threatening them

I've never disputed the importance of ground-work. I just hate BJJ. I hate the Gracie family. I agree with you on the negative image that the earlier family created by some of their actions. They didn't really rip off judo, judo rip itself off. Judo of today is nothing like the original judo. Allot of the younger Gracies, and the guys who trained in Renzo's time and later are really not bad guys. Most of them Study Judo pretty heavily too. Its a media image that has tainted them in some ways. In all fairness they did nothing different from any other martial art, and marketing company.

However, what most people don't understand about Judo is that competition format changed for the olympics to prevent any broken shins or arms in front of a live TV audience, but the actual art and training didn't really change much at all. if you really look at high level BJJ guys, they train Judo (standup). Allot of the Judo guys are doing the same in BJJ in Japan. You can say what you want, but in reality the level of quality drops significantly in 90% of judo schools when they hit the ground. Judo+BJJ = original Judo.
