In my city a still alarm is any type of call through 911 or dispatch other than a medical.Box alarm is radio box signal of fire, still box is possible fire in structure that is alarmed and radio signal sent to dispatch center. I'm in rhode Island by the way.
@ArmyRescue2 Generally speaking, a still alarm is somthing that is alerted directly to the fire station..whether it's by phone, in person, or a unit driving down the road witnessing it directly (in most localities). In most departments, a downed wire would only be considered a still alarm if the call came directly to the station. If someone called 911 it would be a special call for a box, or if it was an alarm drop or smoke odor, reported fire, etc it would be a box call
@farmtruck551 That's not what Still Alarm means in Detroit. I think Box alarm is full response and Still alarm is everything other than a full response.
@farmtruck551 In Michigan a still alarm is a call that is received at the firehouse directly. Which means the dispatcher does not call out that house. The house will call dispatch about the call. Meaning the bell (which alerts crews of a call) is still. Hence the name "Still alarm". I could be wrong but thats how our county is (Ionia Co.)
@DmcWorldCrafter I am 100% sure that's not how Dispatch does it. A Box Alarm is a Structure fire assignment. A Still Alarm is everything other than that.
@youidiot222 still alarm is the international name for a call recieved at the station (if someone runs to the station to report it etc). this is because in the olden days the alarm was given by a bell. If a person reported a fire directly to the station then the alarm bell was "still". thts where the name comes from
@youidiot222 where i come from a still is like an mva and stuff like that. A box alarm is like a structure fire...manpower to a medical or mva....fire...anything that the intial station and orr crew can't handle them selves.
@farmtruck551 A box alarm in Detroit is a structure fire. A still alarm is an alarm for anything ranging from garage fires to electrical wires down. A Special alarm includes car fires, or motor vehicle collisions
@farmtruck551 In most places still alarms means alarms received by the station. Its either an emergency inside the fire house, or someone has called the station directly or walked in and reported something in the area. Then the station contacts dispatch and advises them of call, and if more units are needed they will be dispatched. Some places call things different. Like how your department and my department call our larger water trucks tankers, other places like the east coast its a tender
@farmtruck551 It really depends on the department itself. They have it set up however they want it. For example here with my volunteer department it starts with a still alarm being a single unit, i.e. 1 engine, then a full still is our full house response. i.e. 2 engines, 1 squad, 1 ladder, 1 car. also 2 tenders(tankers) if its outside the city. Then from there if we strike a box, aka box alarm, it would send typically 3 engines, 1 squad, 1 ladder. then from there we could strike a second box
@farmtruck551 which would be another 3 engines, 1 squad, 1 ladder. and so on from there. We have the system already set up at the dispatch center so depending on our location of the incident, would choose which surrounding towns would be called for specific apparatus. Or we could strike a box specifically for a specific type of apparatus if we wanted. For example we could strike a box alarm for ladders, then we would just have a handfull of ladders called in. Thats just how we do it here.

how do you respond to a still alarm? stills are emergencies occuring inside your own house. unless they were going to another house???
