  • Already very oldfashioned, a way of playing that is disappearing. Which isn't such a bad thing...

  • Maquinistacataro que bonito comentario !

    :)

  • Слава!

  • Magnifique!

  • I remember the first time I heard this song. It was live on TV, when this old musician (I don't remember his name) plays the prelude from Bach cello in G major, historical night of the fall of the Berlin Wall. I was barely 14 years. Every time I hear this song by closing my eyes I see the scene with great emotion, cause of symbolic reason, why this cellist decided to play, to the wall, while young Germans broke the curtain of shame with jackhammers, to their arm's stenght.

    Unforgettable!

  • A voz dos anjos....

  • 28 like Babra Streisand XD

  • i love playing this piece though i have a definite tendency to rush like crazy @1:47 onward

  • tempo too fast

  • This makes me want to play the cello :(

  • how moving and beautiful

  • La velocidad con la que la toca es lo que le da el toque especial :) ..Es la mejor versión que he oído hasta el momento.

  • Think about how much that cello is worth...

  • Man this makes me wished I went on with the Cello instead of moving to the Trumpet.

  • That was beautiful -3-3-3-3

  • flawless play

  • madre mia, amaba a Bach, amaba al cello, amaba la música, me amaba a mi, os amaba a vosotros, está gente debería ser inmortal

  • This performance was amazing! The tempo is the best that I have ever heard on this piece. Most people play this prelude too slow, but this is the perfect tempo. I find myself swaying to the music. Only a master like Rostropovich could make such a simple piece so beautiful.

  • @VilliusPossessoris I agree, the tempo gives it more passion, ofcourse many would disagree.

  • @zetrocus

Unfortunately, you are right; many DO disagree.

However, you are absolutely right. The way Rostropovich plays this is so extremely passionate.

  • @VilliusPossessoris I agree. Yo Yo Ma's is excellent as well. One in a while the pulse seems to be slow by other performers. This piece, to me, is a drivong force.. wield it!

  • @reece32100 I agree with you completely VilliusPossessoris. Some people might feel that the tempo is a little fast with this one, but I like the intensity.

  • Sin palabras

  • This song inspired me to start playing this song at a fast tempo. check it out on my channel :3

  • Takes my breath away.

  • Rock on you crazy cello man.

  • absolutely beautiful

  • I'm learning how to play this

  • genius song and player. goose pimples!

  • il respiro dell'universo

  • On November 11, 1989, two days after the opening of the Berlin Wall, played in front of the ruins (people still were demolished the wall in that moment) the suite No. 2 for Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach.

  • R.I.P. Rostropovich

  • tumbs up if you chessmaster 10th brought you here!

  • just because he doesnt slur means 26 people should dislike him. 1,726 people know what they are listning too. the other people are lazy.

  • sensacional!

  • I confess it is my favorite recording of this piece.... the inflection, the emotion are sublime.

  • génie + talent + maitrise + passion = communion de l'émotion

  • voilà la vraie interprétation de ce morceau . respects vénérés .

  • Jesus. H. Christ.

  • When did he played this ? :o

  • i heard...that in some countries where medicine is scarce...they use this as a cure for polio.

  • You will be missed, Rostropovich.

  • Beautiful!

  • 1:36... OOPS!! :S 1:40.... fuck yeah...

  • Génial Rostropovich !!!

  • This is the music of a bigger genius of music, and Rostropovich is one of his best heralds!

  • MY GOOD GOD.

IF THIS IS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE WHEN PEOPLE PLAY CENTURIES LATEr...

What did it sound like when Bach wrote it?Adn who did he have play it?

  • Perfect!!!

  • 1:03 Chevy chase!!!

  • Excellent . He was the best

  • hbvvghvhuv

  • amerini sucaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Loving the tempo!

  • He was so good that i guess he was his own teacher 0_o

  • nervoso ....mi piace

  • if bach wanted it played lowley he would have made them 8th notes

ps sry i have dislexia so mind the spelling

  • Bach wrote this piece for rostropovich to play

  • @adojferz

Bach wrte it first for Casals then for Rostropovich

  • great song but its only enjoyable when its slower!!

  • y is he doing it at a quick tempo? Usually in this piece, u are suppose to take your time with it, to enjoy it, not rush it through

  • Divin...

  • buah... brutal!

  • Que chelista geniallll!!

  • @DikeEris

    As you said it!

    I am not judging interpretations.

As a vioIinist (gerardo1550 [youtube])I started Cello over a year ago and know that it takes quite some physical time for the low notes to really become alive and effective. The character of pieces changes with different tempi: the bigger the instrument the longer the reaction time etc.

  • Fantástico, simplesmente perfeito...

  • @DikeEris

The Russian does an excellent job interpreting Johann Sebastian, no question about it.

A tank of willpower that Rostrop.

The balance between will power and transcendence in playing a Cello however is better achieved (in my taste at least) by Mischa Maiski.

  • @DikeEris

    Are you a player yourself?

The Cello is a big instrument.

If you play it like a violin it will lose its majesty, that's what I mean.

  • this is not as easy as it sounds.. WOW. simply perfect and BEAUTIFUL.

  • In that fast tempo beauty suffers

  • Lindo de +

  • Amazing!!

  • too fast and furious.

  • @gonzalocalderon The only thing wrong about this is that you would interpret differently. It's called music. Learn a thing or two. To each their own.

  • @hunterthompson3 Correct. I do not like this interpretation of Bach Cello Suite No.1. To fast 'n furious. Pablo Casals is more of my taste. You see, even in music one has the right to an opinion.

  • @gonzalocalderon Hence my comment: "To each their own"...

  • Superbo, sublime.. caldo, morbido, rotondo ed aggressivo.. che dire..un'estasi!

  • Glory!

  • I know nothing of the cello or what you people are talking about. This cello music came up as my alarm and i fell in love. This is beautiful.

  • Great performance. Shame about the abrupt cut-off at the end though.

  • great musicality but strict in rhythm at the same time! wonderful playing. The setting is beautiful as well!

  • This man never believed that it is friday, friday..

  • stupendo

  • i cant belive this was my cello theachers teacher...

  • This scraping sound is as though him abusing the strings produces that passionate feel about the rendition, yet the movements of his right wrist are pure elegance. This man, is effing brilliant! The pace is high, but no one should dare say it is rushed.

  • The best cello player....

  • I found cello played by old folks, or maybe Rostropovich only, are exceptionally enchanting

  • This is so good. Doodle Cam app brought me here.

  • I have seen so many guys playing this song! and no one has the feeling Rostropovich does! fucking amazing!

  • this is so beautiful

  • Well Let me start off by saying that i am a 16 year old Junior. I enjoy the Six Suites! and this one is my solo.. i have not fully mastered it like he has, but i am very talented! one day i will record it and put it on here. & i hope to be as successful & accomplished as him. i have been playing the cello since the 5 grade and it is alot of fun, i encourage everyone to participate in a strings class! it's alot of fun! That's all! <3

  • wow very nice..!

  • god...

  • Beautiful playing, but I wish that he would have played it a little slower.

  • Can you put the whole Cello Suite No. 1 on YouTube? Or is this the whole song? I don't want to come across as foolish; I'm just starting to appreciate classical music.

  • SUBLIME !!!!! Junto con Jacqueline du Pré son las versiones que más me entusiasman!!

  • solo una palabra ... VIRTUOSO

  • Yeah!!!! Ese viejito si sabe... mis respetos!

  • la musica es el sexo del espiritu...¿no?.

  • Geez, slow down!

  • holy tempo batman!

  • I think that maybe Rostropovich rushed this one a little bit. But god, he's a damn good cellist.

  • Se DEUS falasse por notas musicais, certamente o som seria este.

    Bom fim de semana.

  • A lil' fast

  • I preferd Yo-yo ma's version...

  • I keep searching for the best audio quality only to realize that the best audio quality is live.

  • I like the gentleman with crazy hair and beard, but all those videos have a creepy whispering in the background that scares me at night. Bach on the cello is my favorite.

  • @nickguice What do you mean about "Bach on the cello?"

  • My father loved classical music all his life. I'm considering using this piece of music for his service... it seems like something he would have enjoyed.

  • I am 14 years old and play the violoncello. I have uploaded my own interpretation of this piece. It's of course not as masterful as this video, but it would still be nice if you would check it out and tell me what you think about it.

  • Why??

Why is this video cutted at the beginning of the reverb of the last note?

It`s little bit like in these kind of concerts where the audience destroys the whole tension of the piece by giving applause and shouting bravo before the last note faded away.

  • @sarge777 LOL i never noticed that before, it really does look like chevy chase.

  • Comment removed

  • makes me cry

  • Rostropovich plays hard like he's trying to prove something. I prefer the slower, softer version by Mischa Maisky. His note transitions are much smoother.

  • @NeloAngelo33 yea he's playing it too fast, kills the emotion of the song...

  • Supposedly the cello he always played had a couple of scratches on the side that were supposed to have been made by Napoleon's spurs, who had a captured Russian string quartet play for him in a tent in 1812 on the road to Moscow.

  • This is the muisc of God!!!!! The harmony, the melody, the passion, .....

  • Cello playing like a boss.

  • Get it!

  • the older you get, the better this stuff is

funny how it was around when I was young, and I had no respect for classical

now I'm thinking, "what the hell is wrong with music nowadays? they had it right hundreds of years ago..."

  • Not true... When I was a young child I loved bach. I still do to this day, it can make me weep.

  • DAMN, dude can shred like a mofo

  • King's Speech. <3

  • Replay: 0:22

  • It's just beyond me why classical music doesn't enjoy a more widespread appeal. Look at him for crying out loud! He's shredding a cello!

  • Old man has skills

  • Much better.

  • Very beautiful. I would like to point out that this man looks like be belongs on our currency.

  • If the "artists" making up the Billboard Hot 100 had half the talent this guy has, the world would be such a better place.

  • Beautiful. Just beautiful.

  • Does anyone know if this is on DVD? It would be nice to have

  • where's the beatboxing!!?!?!

    Just kidding, beautiful. :)

  • i'm working on this solo in orchestra.....i'm 13.........this is like my mom's favorite classical piece ever...........little does she know i'm playing it in a concert......(:

  • Don't even think about criticising this man. He's a pro in what he does, so what does it matter how he holds the bow, and where the pin is on the ground. Just enjoy him playing this nice and beautiful music

  • i love howhe holds the bow,,,, like a complete amateur, but it produces a nice crisp and smooth sound :)

  • wow, this song is what I am learning guitar, beautiful!

  • Comment removed

  • somewhere a serial killer is getting ready to kill his prey and this is the background music. :P

  • lol he sounds so good but his endpin is too far out on the floor lol

  • Such an enchanting sound bellows through the emptiness of that room filling it with the sound of brilliant and real music .

  • Legend

  • ... (no diré más)

  • Me ha encantado recordarla una vez mas y siempre me resulta igual de apasionante. Gracias! creo q esta noche dormiré mejor. besos

  • :)...

  • @MaKiMaJaMiKoMiCa Haters gonna hate!

  • Do try Pablo Casals Cello Prelude. Both are great, but is sounds that they are playing diferent musics. Casals has tuned his cello in an amazing, iddiossincratic and to my wiew extraordinary way.

  • @bulbasaurevolved Totally agree

  • How can so much of Bach's music sound like exercises and scales and sound so beautiful as well?

  • flawless...

  • slow downnn...!....your goin wayy to fast...but other then that amazing!

  • @bulbasaurevolved i din' t notice the name. i must say i was surprised that actually ivysaur liked classical music xDxDxD

  • @bulbasaurevolved i didn' t care at the moment cos i was too surprised venusaur actually likes classical music xDxDxD

  • i have to admit that is the first time i heard it and i love it!! i was moving my head with sound. just amazing :D<-----it really make me smile

  • I think he's not playing it to fast; because that's the way it should be played.

If you have seen a music sheet of this piece, it shows that it should be NINETY-SIX QUARTER NOTES should be played IN ON MINUTE. The whole piece is COMPOSED OF SIXTEENTH NOTES, that means, THREE-HUNDRED-EIGHTY-FOUR NOTES SHOULD BE PLAYED IN ONE MINUTE.

  • You can listen to all those years of experience flowing from his fingers into his cello...O.O Amazing

  • Comment removed

  • Great!

  • Too fast!!! Slow down

  • Slow down!!! I think he played it way to fast

  • Love it!! me gusta mas que la interpretacion de yo yo ma de esta misma parte..

  • @MaKiMaJaMiKoMiCa i think juste the oposite , those who slow play this tend to emphasize certain notes and the overall efect is meaningless. This instead comes as a blast of emotion.

  • Really nice audio quality on this one

  • Music is what feelings sound like.....

  • It's Magical sound!!!!

  • Just what I needed in this second.

  • It works well for him at this tempo because he plays it like no other. So awesome.
