I remember the first time I heard this song. It was live on TV, when this old musician (I don't remember his name) plays the prelude from Bach cello in G major, historical night of the fall of the Berlin Wall. I was barely 14 years. Every time I hear this song by closing my eyes I see the scene with great emotion, cause of symbolic reason, why this cellist decided to play, to the wall, while young Germans broke the curtain of shame with jackhammers, to their arm's stenght.
youtube.com/watch?v=yF381btEULc I THINK THIS VERSION ROCKS AND PEOPLE SHOULD SEE THIS. The same Bach song on electric guitar. (copy/paste the link)
This performance was amazing! The tempo is the best that I have ever heard on this piece. Most people play this prelude too slow, but this is the perfect tempo. I find myself swaying to the music. Only a master like Rostropovich could make such a simple piece so beautiful.
@VilliusPossessoris I agree. Yo Yo Ma's is excellent as well. One in a while the pulse seems to be slow by other performers. This piece, to me, is a drivong force.. wield it!
@reece32100 I agree with you completely VilliusPossessoris. Some people might feel that the tempo is a little fast with this one, but I like the intensity.
On November 11, 1989, two days after the opening of the Berlin Wall, played in front of the ruins (people still were demolished the wall in that moment) the suite No. 2 for Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach.
As a vioIinist (gerardo1550 [youtube])I started Cello over a year ago and know that it takes quite some physical time for the low notes to really become alive and effective. The character of pieces changes with different tempi: the bigger the instrument the longer the reaction time etc.
@hunterthompson3 Correct. I do not like this interpretation of Bach Cello Suite No.1. To fast 'n furious. Pablo Casals is more of my taste. You see, even in music one has the right to an opinion.
This scraping sound is as though him abusing the strings produces that passionate feel about the rendition, yet the movements of his right wrist are pure elegance. This man, is effing brilliant! The pace is high, but no one should dare say it is rushed.
Well Let me start off by saying that i am a 16 year old Junior. I enjoy the Six Suites! and this one is my solo.. i have not fully mastered it like he has, but i am very talented! one day i will record it and put it on here. & i hope to be as successful & accomplished as him. i have been playing the cello since the 5 grade and it is alot of fun, i encourage everyone to participate in a strings class! it's alot of fun! That's all! <3
Can you put the whole Cello Suite No. 1 on YouTube? Or is this the whole song? I don't want to come across as foolish; I'm just starting to appreciate classical music.
I like the gentleman with crazy hair and beard, but all those videos have a creepy whispering in the background that scares me at night. Bach on the cello is my favorite.
My father loved classical music all his life. I'm considering using this piece of music for his service... it seems like something he would have enjoyed.
I am 14 years old and play the violoncello. I have uploaded my own interpretation of this piece. It's of course not as masterful as this video, but it would still be nice if you would check it out and tell me what you think about it.
Why is this video cutted at the beginning of the reverb of the last note?
It`s little bit like in these kind of concerts where the audience destroys the whole tension of the piece by giving applause and shouting bravo before the last note faded away.
Rostropovich plays hard like he's trying to prove something. I prefer the slower, softer version by Mischa Maisky. His note transitions are much smoother.
Supposedly the cello he always played had a couple of scratches on the side that were supposed to have been made by Napoleon's spurs, who had a captured Russian string quartet play for him in a tent in 1812 on the road to Moscow.
i'm working on this solo in orchestra.....i'm 13.........this is like my mom's favorite classical piece ever...........little does she know i'm playing it in a concert......(:
Don't even think about criticising this man. He's a pro in what he does, so what does it matter how he holds the bow, and where the pin is on the ground. Just enjoy him playing this nice and beautiful music
Do try Pablo Casals Cello Prelude. Both are great, but is sounds that they are playing diferent musics. Casals has tuned his cello in an amazing, iddiossincratic and to my wiew extraordinary way.
I think he's not playing it to fast; because that's the way it should be played.
If you have seen a music sheet of this piece, it shows that it should be NINETY-SIX QUARTER NOTES should be played IN ON MINUTE. The whole piece is COMPOSED OF SIXTEENTH NOTES, that means, THREE-HUNDRED-EIGHTY-FOUR NOTES SHOULD BE PLAYED IN ONE MINUTE.
@MaKiMaJaMiKoMiCa i think juste the oposite , those who slow play this tend to emphasize certain notes and the overall efect is meaningless. This instead comes as a blast of emotion.
Already very oldfashioned, a way of playing that is disappearing. Which isn't such a bad thing...

@DikeEris
The Russian does an excellent job interpreting Johann Sebastian, no question about it.
A tank of willpower that Rostrop.
The balance between will power and transcendence in playing a Cello however is better achieved (in my taste at least) by Mischa Maiski.
celticcelticwger066 4 months ago

The Cello is a big instrument.
