@Shilasta: most friends tend to drift away after their formative years. besides, it is the law of the jungle to rely on necessity, taking only what is needed & being fit enough to survive through the survival of the fittest mantra. in fact, if truth be told, shere khan was only growing into a real tiger's instincts, whereas the rest kept relations but still grew apart to live separate lives, since only baloo, louie, & baggy remained closest in terms of friendship.

These characters remind me wayyyy too much of TLK. Mara is Scar, her sons are the hyenas, khan is simba, and they're in a "graveyard" in the "wastelands".

You know, some adult characters from various cartoons act like they have no family too. That includes the good guys too. They are normal everyday citizents, but act like they have no parents, no children, not even a spouse, nothing but friends. I pity those kind of characters, I really do.

Odd how in the movie, they bolster Shere Khan as a murderous killer, but in this, they bolster him simply as a kid-orientated bully. Pretty half-assed in my opinion.
