Poor Robin will never get the cred (too derivative), but Jimmy Dewar HAS to be in the top 5 of all time for vox along with Paul Rodgers. Dead way too soon.
when i had the chance to meet robin and the band it was in a small intimate venue and the sound crew did an excellent job. there was not a bad seat in the house. from the first time i heard trower he has been my favorite guitarist. if you get the chance to see him live take it
@hondarave I love my mom, and she loves Hendrix, Black Sabbath and Trower because of me... Bless you and your mom, cherish those memories... My mom just turned 69, we went to Europe this summer.. I'm building the memories.. the long misty days can be good as well.
I have loved listening to RT since Twice Removed from Yesterday and this track is without doubt one of his standout offerings. Superb understated guitar is the key here, Robin doesn't try to take over the song, it's as if he wanted to just let Jimmy D take centre stage with a masterful vocal. A really haunting track, never tire of hearing it. Bill Lordan on drums is often left out on comments left. Shame, as he was instrumental (quite literally!) in the production of all RT's TRULY great albums.
I just don't think it could ever get better than this....Long Misty Days! Robin Trower and James Dewar...A musical match made in heaven...One of my all time favorite Trower songs! RIP Jimmy!
People talk about the sadness of musicians dying before their time. That was the case with James Dewar. He had such a great smokey, whiskey drenched blues voice; very few can come close to the amazing expression or tone of his voice.
I got a story too. Back in the 70's I snuck back stage and watched him from there for about 2 songs till I got busted and thrown out on my arse. No refund, no nuthin.
Someday after I am gone from this earth I may learn how many hours I actually spent with the headphones on listening to this album. I don't even want to guess.
Dewer could melt a cast iron heart, and I swear, Trower and Dewer where placed on earth to meet each other even if just for a while. They flow together like the confluence of the Missouri and the Mississippi. Once together the guitar and vocals where inseparable. They give me the feeling of a mighty river meandering, flowing, inarguable, placid, but preeminent to the estuary .
@ihop54 yeah, i used to think, roy buchanan needed someone like dewer to really come up with some lyrics and to especially cover the vocals; so roy didn't have to sing....that was painful.
@ihop54 Soooo right!! That's what I've been trying to say, but couldn't say it as perfectly as you just did, From first word to last. You said what my heart was feeling but my brain couldn't verbalize. "Somebody Calling" fills my heart to nearly bursting. Thank you!
What an absolutely hauntingly beautiful song. I generally go for female singers, but occasionally a voice comes along that transcends any preconceptions--this is one such singer and song. It haunted me back in the 70's when I listened to Joni Mitchell and Buffy Sainte-Marie. This is the first time I've heard it in over 30 years, though I repair to it occasionally for a listen. Thanks for music and montage.

I was a junior in high school when this was released. I was so obsessed with this song. I would put all 4 speakers on the floor in a square and put my pillow right in the middle, lay my head down and crank it. Sublime. I did this with a lot of my records. Might be why I have tinnitus now. It was worth it!
@tx6161 Ain't it the truth! I lived through the 8-track era--known in religious studies as the "dark night of the soul." These young tech Turks sending Robin Trower (and Hendrix--"Peach in Mississippi") have helped revitalize those long gone "long misty days."

My absolute favorite Trower song. Jimmy Dewar just absolutely nails it. Amazing Scotsman, still missed today. What a voice. No slouch on a Bass either! Together with Trower, what a team they were. Trower still has it today but it would be so much better with Jimmy there. RIP James Dewar, we sill mourn your passing.
I've got a trower story... in 1988 i went to pittsburgh to see him and the show was sold out so i headed back home. i got lost in the burgh and by chance i asked directions from his sound crew who sent me back cuz they put my name on the guest list. I got to meet the man his band and had front row seats. he is about the most amazing guitarist i've ever met
@zipzipzappy also had chance to meet him in Chicago back in 1980, at a record store where he was making appearance. Got to meet him, Jim and Bill, all were really nice guys, and saw the show at Granada Theater that night, small venue but great sound and intimate atmosphere.
Talk about an under rated guitarist. All I ever heard people say was he was a Hendrix rip off when he went solo. Never understood that. They didn't say that about him when he was playing with Procol Harum. I've always thought his guitar playing was understated which is why I think people found it easy to dismiss him. They just weren't listening. I am a sucker for fuzz and sustain so I couldn't get enough of the band. Still thinks he's brilliant..

@daffycat1 agree 100% he should have had worldwide fame and all that goes with it but sadly is probably unknown to most . An incredible vocal talent . That voice is spinechillingly wonderful . He was obviously content to play bass / sing and let Robin take the spotlight .
Love Trower! One of my all time favorites! Say, you should check out this band called Den Of Thieves. They have a song called Killing For Love. The guitarist has a Blackmore/Trower style, the drummer is like Bonham and the bass player reminds me of McCartney's melodic feel. Very intense and unique group. Love them!
@ danolson ...as a huge fan of RT...I think that thing is pure crap., made by shitty critics into Lady Gaga and trash like that....!I saw RT in USA Summer2009..he still a great one of all times....
Yes, that publication is a little "Too Rolling Stoned" for me. Kind of like the R & R Hall of Fame neglecting so many great performers, including the Moody Blues. We give those institutions far too much credibility when we give them any. The fans always need more of a voice. Here we have it.
@lightlyone Agreed!!!! Moody blues should be in and so should Chicago. I was looking at their website yesterday and half of them in there I've never heard of.
clubmidnightsun hit the nail on the head. Trower is up there with the greatest. I have seen Trower, Page, Blackmore and Moreno Live in Houston TX and I would like to see them all there again. Great shows great guitars... Rolling Stone needs to pull the head from the place the sun don't shine.
I never understood how Dewar could sound like he was ripping his very soul out and throwing it at you, but when you see him live in these videos he looks like it's just another stroll in the park. I never cared for blues until I heard him. What a voice!
@AleksanderNile I ask myself May questions like that. Why is this man not in the rock & roll hall of fame>??? W.T.H. is up with that? the fukin Beastie boys?? nom.this year? REally really ..!!!!?? i wanna say i quit when i hear shit like that.... My two cents.
Being a long time musician I would like to think that theres a nice place to jam in the after life and we can all have a spot....
@sfvwillie777 well my friend ive simply given up on the hall of fame. but all hes played is fender for years! pretty much his entire career! but fender cant recognize that? idk
Trower and Dewar were a match made in Heaven and given as a gift of God to us all.One of my favorite songs they recorded together [though I have many].I only got to see them both once, live in West Palm Beach in the early eighty's; but they just blew everybody away who attended that concert. It was a sold out preformance; and for good reason. How could anyone with an ear for music not love them?I still love listening to Trower as much today as when I was 20 years old. Good music never dies.
1)Mr.Trower is the singly most underrated electric guitar player of the whole of rock.
2)Rolling Stone is/was so far up it's own ass the only light source was the ear and nostril holes..
3)How old is the sucker who posts the suggested videos for Youtube? When I look for Robin Trower do they realy think I want to see the latest Jedward offering?
Hey, you guys! This has been some pretty good dialog so far. None of that "dick thing" stuff. We don't have to compare one to the other. If we love the music, then the rest hardly seems to matter. I will now go on record (such as it is) and say that Jimi, at his best moments, came close to finding the Lost Chord. I believe he could have split the universe.
He captured a sound, an atmosphere, if you will. As hendrix lovers, we decided that what Trower was trying to do was respectful, not mimicking, like those who are better left unnamed. Jimi was always seeking. I find no fault in what Trower was extending in that regard. Peace.
This track has everything moody guitar with that dirty sound and topped with Dewers fantastic voice espec from 4.35 with that beautifully held note "WoW" followed by Robins guitar, l just love this track...10/10 from me.
Man this is so good and correct. I was only 14 in 1976, so the 80's till now are my decades. I started out in the 70's though and remember this. It's been at least 26 years since I've heard this and have never been so happy to hear a great old song I remember!...
I discovered RT back around 73, at the time I liked his music but many felt that he was milking the Jimi thing and that Frank Marino did that better. It quickly became clear to me that RT really infused his own 'soul' into his playing and the music. Many players with great chops just keep time through verses until they can riff out but he really plays quite soulfully, straight through. RT NOT being on the '100 greatest' list makes about as much sense as calling Britney Spears a musical talent.
I am not an out and out Robin trowers fan but the first time I heard this song it got all the way into my soul and stayed there it has been there a lot of years and evry time i hear it it takes me to a lovely place for that thanx Mr Trowers x
@hmsmagpie wow, I've not heard it interpreted this way...and I think you are right. Trower plays with such passion he makes you "feel" it! We guitar fans need to carry the torch for him as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame does not "get it".
Saw Trower at the Music Hall in Boston in the late 70s. Awesome show, but most interesting part was the opening act was a new Boston-based pop/punk rock band that was just a bad match for a Trower crowd. They were basically booed as soon as they started playing and eventually walked off the stage after playing for maybe half an hour. That opening act was The Cars.
Unfortunately, I CAN believe Rolling Stone Mag left Trower out. And here's why: You actually have to think when you listen to Trower. People these days don't go in for using their brains. They want everything handed to them in simplisity, which is a kind way of saying, people are stupid. And stupid people don't dig Trower.
Had the good fortune to meet Jimmy Dewar and Davey Pattison in the Mayflower pub in San Rafael the late 80s Two nicer guys you will never meet. Jimmy sang " Scarlet Ribbons". It would bring tears to a glass eye ! Awsome !
Who cares if some magazine ranks someone in their Top 100? What really matters is what the music (or in this case, the musician) does to your soul. Trower is, and will always be, one of my favorites. Thank you glen922 for posting the song and creating the visuals!
THAT'S WHY ROLLING STONE IS BULLSHIT, MAN. Fuck that crap. How dare they NOT PUT TROWER. TROWER should have been FIRST on the list, man. Joan Jett, can't even fucking play, man. She sucks. Trower is probably the BEST guitarist ALIVE today............period. In any instrument, reaching for the HIGH note and then HOLDING THAT NOTE is the most hardest thing to do and Trower has been doing that shit since 1975, man. Hendrix was the Master.
@Drawmin94 Dude...........I used to go to La Maur's Rock Captitol of Brooklyn and see Frank Marino, Malsteem, Zebra, Stripper, Twister Sister, White Lion and when these glam rock bands used to play, there would be thousands of chicks all hot and bothered. I used to get blow jobs in dark corners of the place or even get laid. Then, freaking death metal came and instead of chicks there were guys. It felt like a gay club. Fights.
Can you believe that when Rolling Stone compiled their "100 greatest guitarists" list, Trower wasn't on it? They had room on it for Joan Jett, though. Credibility not. More evidence of that rag's decline, I guess.
I believe it. I think that it is a shame that it isn't even about the music. It is about advertising and sales- I think. Even with a tin ear, anyone can tell this is great playing, and not many guitarist can touch this. Joan Jett comes around once in a while, and I never entertain the notion of going to see her.
@danolson I guess RS makes that list based on popularity, not on the skills...Billy Joe Armstrong was in the top 30 or even 20 I guess...god bless Robin tho
@danolson I'd have to agree. Trowers' skill and passion is incredible. He's a huge part of the history of rock and roll .... The fusion of extreme rock and soul rending blues was perfection!
@danolson, That's one of the reasons Rolling Stone Mag is a shit mag. Not Too Rolling Stoned. Just too fucking stoned to pull their heads out! Trower and Dewar = CLASSIC!
@danolson I can believe it. That rag has been irrelevant for decades. These are the same stiff critics who think they're cool & have their finger on the pulse of the music industry, but have helped keep Iron Maiden, Rush, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Alice Cooper, etc out of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, while voting in Abba & Madonna. They hate progressive, Heavy Metal & Psychodelic blues music, hence their snub of those aforementioned & Robin Trower. Bunch of irrelevant dumbasses...
@danolson Bloody cold shot that is. It was Trower who made me start playing and spawned my love of pedals more so than Clapton and Page. I did become fixated on Page and Jeff Beck even to this day but Trower is amazing, his tone untouched by even Hendrix. I have everything he has done loaded in my IPOD unit and it sounds as good now as it blew me away back then, we love you Robin and we remember the days of old when magic filled the air and it was your tone on the wind.
@danolson I remember the first time this was played on Los Angeles radio. The DJ said, "I think weve been transported back to 1967! Brilliant! One of my favs. Dewar was as good as Trower
@103121 I know what you're saying, but like many Trower fans I'm sensitive about any implied Hendrix comparisons. Undeniably Trower plays in the Hendrix school, and as the originator, Hendrix has something that can never be taken away from him, but Trower's emotional vocabulary was (and is) entirely his own, PLUS he was a much more solid songwriter, PLUS he had a much better vocalist.
There is nothing bad about Robin Trower, man. I just wish I could get some videos out. I only have two because I have extremely high standards. Anyway, LONG LIVE TROWER!
This has to be the most INNOVATIVE trower song, ever. He is such a fantastic SLOW-HAND player. I would absolutely LOVE to hear this song live and stonned..etc.....LOL It sound psychodelic mixed with like an old 70's southern rock alternative feel. Big sound, man. For a POWER TRIO, they have to be one of the most fullest live bands ever. It's about time someone upload a song beside his usual popular songs. Anything Robin Trower touches with his fingers turns to GOLD.
1977 (I think) in Tempe, AZ. Trower concert, crowd was filed and used as "concert crowd" for Barbara Streisand movie A Star is Born. I was there...thought it was hysterical that someone as "fabulous" as Streisand couldn't produce the kind of crowd they wanted to show in the movie. Love this guy!
Was fortunate enough to see Robin with James Dewer in West Palm Beach in the early eightys. This song still blows me away even after all these years. Great music never dies. It's a kiss from God. Thanks Robin.
C'mon, let's at least get his name right, it's James Dewar (October 12, 1942, born in Glasgow died May 16, 2002 in Glasgow) Scottish bassist and vocalist for Robin Trower Band.
I have seen this man play since 74. He is the main reason I play guitar today. He has more soul and passion than anyone playing today. When you hear one of his songs you AUTOMATICALLY know who it is and can't stop the goosebumps from coming on. Gotta love it!!

clubmidnightsun hit the nail on the head. Trower is up there with the greatest. I have seen Trower, Page, Blackmore and Moreno Live in Houston TX and I would like to see them all there again. Great shows great guitars... Rolling Stone needs to pull the head from the place the sun don't shine.

Trower is an AMAZING guitarist! He should have been on the "100 greatest guitarist" Sadly not many people know he exsist. what a shame....

I never understood how Dewar could sound like he was ripping his very soul out and throwing it at you, but when you see him live in these videos he looks like it's just another stroll in the park. I never cared for blues until I heard him. What a voice!

As a 55yr old Englishman may I make 3 points:-
1)Mr.Trower is the singly most underrated electric guitar player of the whole of rock.

I believe he could have split the universe.
chiefashley56 1 year ago
He captured a sound, an atmosphere, if you will. As hendrix lovers, we decided that what Trower was trying to do was respectful, not mimicking, like those who are better left unnamed. Jimi was always seeking. I find no fault in what Trower was extending in that regard. Peace.

Man this is so good and correct. I was only 14 in 1976, so the 80's till now are my decades. I started out in the 70's though and remember this. It's been at least 26 years since I've heard this and have never been so happy to hear a great old song I remember!...
driverofsound 1 year ago
I discovered RT back around 73, at the time I liked his music but many felt that he was milking the Jimi thing and that Frank Marino did that better. It quickly became clear to me that RT really infused his own 'soul' into his playing and the music. Many players with great chops just keep time through verses until they can riff out but he really plays quite soulfully, straight through. RT NOT being on the '100 greatest' list makes about as much sense as calling Britney Spears a musical talent.

Robin Trower's hand reaches inside your stomach and twists your guts until you scream in pain and ecstacy.
hmsmagpie 1 year ago
@hmsmagpie wow, I've not heard it interpreted this way...and I think you are right. Trower plays with such passion he makes you "feel" it! We guitar fans need to carry the torch for him as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame does not "get it".
pike9346 1 year ago

Drawmin94 1 year ago
@Drawmin94 Dude...........I used to go to La Maur's Rock Captitol of Brooklyn and see Frank Marino, Malsteem, Zebra, Stripper, Twister Sister, White Lion and when these glam rock bands used to play, there would be thousands of chicks all hot and bothered. I used to get blow jobs in dark corners of the place or even get laid. Then, freaking death metal came and instead of chicks there were guys. It felt like a gay club. Fights.
TheGreatLouMass 1 year ago
Can you believe that when Rolling Stone compiled their "100 greatest guitarists" list, Trower wasn't on it? They had room on it for Joan Jett, though. Credibility not. More evidence of that rag's decline, I guess.
danolson 1 year ago 67
I believe it. I think that it is a shame that it isn't even about the music. It is about advertising and sales- I think. Even with a tin ear, anyone can tell this is great playing, and not many guitarist can touch this. Joan Jett comes around once in a while, and I never entertain the notion of going to see her.

@danolson Robin Trower and this band are among the greatest. Rolling Stone is a joke.
clarkewi 1 year ago
@danolson I can believe it. That rag has been irrelevant for decades. These are the same stiff critics who think they're cool & have their finger on the pulse of the music industry, but have helped keep Iron Maiden, Rush, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Alice Cooper, etc out of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, while voting in Abba & Madonna. They hate progressive, Heavy Metal & Psychodelic blues music, hence their snub of those aforementioned & Robin Trower. Bunch of irrelevant dumbasses...
seattlejohn01 1 year ago 2
@danolson Are you serious?!? Robin wasn't on that list?!? Fuck it, I don't read that mag anyway. lol. Talk about credibility issues.
uofm97 1 year ago
@danolson Bloody cold shot that is. It was Trower who made me start playing and spawned my love of pedals more so than Clapton and Page. I did become fixated on Page and Jeff Beck even to this day but Trower is amazing, his tone untouched by even Hendrix. I have everything he has done loaded in my IPOD unit and it sounds as good now as it blew me away back then, we love you Robin and we remember the days of old when magic filled the air and it was your tone on the wind.

103121 1 year ago
@103121 I know what you're saying, but like many Trower fans I'm sensitive about any implied Hendrix comparisons. Undeniably Trower plays in the Hendrix school, and as the originator, Hendrix has something that can never be taken away from him, but Trower's emotional vocabulary was (and is) entirely his own, PLUS he was a much more solid songwriter, PLUS he had a much better vocalist.
