His fellow Spanish-speaking colleague of an era before him, Alfredo Kraus was one of the best Tonio's to see and hear. Florez leaves him floundering! What a beautiful true leggiero voice and a perfectly mastered technique on top of a really believable interpretation of the role. Such ease. Such perfection! Bravo bravo!
@fernando37993 Are you nuts?? he is a light tenor he has to sound that way! He doesn´t sound like a woman! You don´t hear so much classic music, do you?
@enderarias You know what some people are just dumb and just look for shit to say no matter how ridiculous and out of place it is. Just ignore them. I doubt this dud even know the difference types of tenors.
Juan Diego Florez is without a doubt one of the most brilliant tenors of all time. Take a moment to enjoy his one of a kind talent instead of judging him. After all he earned his fame.
@mactopolis are u fucking insane?? tell me can you sing like florez?? i doubt it. Florex is probably the best tenor of our time. Each and every major singer has a different sound. for example pavarotti is completely differnet to Kraus. at the same time he most certainly does not have a small voice. u cant have a small voice as a tenor and still sing top c's not like that. I come from a long line of singers and tenors to be precise. and you sir are a fool if you believe he has a small voice.
this performance is alot better than his first performance of this piece since he does not have to worry about all the acting and the nervousness is gone. he can now focus his full attention on caressing each note .
@imhellahi I actually like it less for that reason; I preferred the light, slightly nervous approach. It lent his performance an agility that it lacks in this showing.

@ramirinnn Please notice that I said HIGH LYRIC TENOR which is another way to say leggero. Also notice that we fully agree on the greatest of his gift and I assume his perfection of his art. With Juan Diego we are watching and listening to a singer of true historical importance.

You can always find something to critisize even in all the greats. So? The man is a working, tenor of high caliber. His tech. is wonderful and his natural talent is evident. Jealous much?
Purists may have some issues to critisize Juan Diego. But remember that even Pavarotti was booed during a performance of Don Carlo, and there were even some people who said Alfredo Kraus did not have a "drama sense" on stage. My fach is French Lyric, and his performances of Manon, Werther, Hoffmann, etc... are exquisitie perfection, but he was bel canto first and foremost, and it always showed
@zucchini2007 Many famous singers were booed in Italy, especially at La Scala at one time or another - the audience there can be extremely demanding and perfectionist. In a particular performance Pavarotti cracked on a note. If you want to see a singer today boeed at La Scala search for "Alagna booed at La Scala" - you can decide for yourself if the singer deserved it.

ok i like how people who obviously know nothing about the voice comment on his voice....oh and by the way he was trained by PAVAROTTI so you might want to think about commenting next time...
BRAVO!! brave tenor he sure is; in the other hand, even if the color of the voice is ligth and metalic, his technique, allows him to perform "high squillo effects"in his high notes. The only thing I don't like, is that he has a "quick vibrato", due to pushing too much; thing that he does not needs. The best tenor pack in the world rigth now!!!!
The uneducated speak freely of a "Choir Boy" and a "light voice".....DUH!!!! "They open their mouths and bear out their ignorance. The part was written for this vocal quality, dexterity and lightness!!! 9 high "C" moments require that lightness!!! Pavoratti had it until he went to heavier roles!!!! Dudes!!! Listen and learn............
a wagnerian tenor would sound very stupid singing a light piece like this!!!! why cant some people give credit where credit is due!!!! i am a light tenor and i sing this aria....can you...fabrizzzio48?
WHAT ARE YOU ALL SAYING! He is amazing! Yes, he has a light voice (which you foolishly call a child´s voice) but his technique is unparalled and his high register and voice is the best of all the tenors around at the moment. No current tenor can touch him
Lets hear all of you do better!!!! Post your videos plz!!!! Stamina, support and relaxation are hard to perfect in every performance of this aria! When you sing concert after concert, day after day with that pressure then you can comment! Until then shut up! It is easy to pick on those at the top! By the way plz research the term fach...it has some significance to your rambling!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Excuse to all who think that he is talented! I have heard him at 7 Concerts and many times singing opera.....but his high register is not enough! He is not able to sing BRILLANTE! He dont know what it means to sing TENORHIGHTONES...he sings like a child (he need more studium for the high notes! - more maturity of using this register!) ALFREDO KRAUS and FRANCISCO ARAIZA - this is singing with an instrument called SOLOTENOR
dude its because he is leggerio. His vioce is just that light. I agree and do not love his voice but i do not think its somethin that can be fixed. Embrace it as a different quality of tenor.
did anyone else notice a shift in the color of his final c at 7:07???-- as he came down from the c and -- and then again at 7:10 as he turned red in the face??? he seemed to have lost breath support under the note and b struggled to finish audibly. i though the aria was beyond fatastic up to this point.
Saludos.
You dork, He's a leggiero tenor, they arent known for their power, but their lightness and agility, as well as their ease of access to their higher registers.
Fabrizzio-You're entitled to like whomever you want. I have seen Blake on several occasions. In my opinion Blake sounds like a pig's squeal when he reached the top. The timbre of his voice is irritating. I don't hate Domingo. Get over your binary logic if you can help it. I have no respect for his artistic prostitution and debasement of opera.
I am reading, and you just told someone they're an asshole for criticizing your opinion and then went ahead and criticized someone else's opinion. This guy must be doing something right because he performed the first encore (with this piece) in 74 years at La Scala and the first in 14 at the Met. Leggiero tenors don't need sheer power. His voice can be heard in the back of even the largest opera houses because of his fantastic placement. His agility is breathtaking.
he is really phenomenal, everything is great.. from his faultless technique, which allows him to fill the phrases with his amazing musical intelligence to great "acting" for a concert performance!
Didn´t he ¨feel¨ anything???? What he was suppose to do after your viewpoint? To dance it? He almost did it ! (And this is the only thing I didn´t like it: so many movements)
Some of popular musicians said that he will be the next generation best tenor and fill up the pavarotti's place. However, unfortunately he has so high tone voice naturally which can't be same as greatest king of tenor ,pavarotti who could sing low to high note fluently
I go to Juilliard and I met him walking out of the school area, it tripped me out so much! He's such a nice guy too, and he's about 5'8 if anyone wanted to know!
OMG...I just read about him...he is the best tenor of the world at the moment!!!And this Donizzetti apparently is impossible to sing though an opera comique...it needs both a great tenot and a coloratura soprano. And for those in love with him, like me hehehe..he will sing at the Metropolitan this May...I'll go and I'll eg for an encore---he broke the rule and did one a few days ago...
He is moving into Verdi. There's a uTube posting with his Duke sung at Teatro Calloa. He is scheduled to sing that part in Dresden this summer and Madrid next. This is all good.
His voice is a lyric, Domingo is a spinto, very different voice type. This is very fine and he sings it tomorrow at the met on a brdcst. and has done it last week with an encore and sang it twice in a row!
Fantastic. C's with super ease and clarity. In many ways his voice reminds me very much of his mentor Palacio, but overall his voice is more pleasing to my ear. And he has a charming air.
Quanto a Gedda, lasciamo perdere...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
O come on!It's quite easy for a voice so small as his voice to sing high notes. He has such a small and thin voice. He sounds as a 14 years old boy.I prefer Pavarotti ,Gedda or Kraus on leggero roles than Florez. He hasn't the style and grace Gedda and Kraus had.
O come on stop comparing!!!! Pavarotti is not better than Florez nor is Florez better than Pavarotti!!! They are both so different how can you compare?? Afterall Pavarotti, Gedda and Kraus are now dead!! As wonderful as they were, they are no more!!! just get over it!!!

BRAVO!! brave tenor he sure is; in the other hand, even if the color of the voice is ligth and metalic, his technique, allows him to perform "high squillo effects"in his high notes. The only thing I don't like, is that he has a "quick vibrato", due to pushing too much; thing that he does not needs. The best tenor pack in the world rigth now!!!!
juancristobal60 3 years ago
His technique is flawless! He drops his jaw at the right time; he has forward resonance, and good control of his air!!!
Wow, I'm sooooooooooo mesmerized; it's spellbinding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dudes!!! Listen and learn............

sperelli1 3 years ago 3

No power in this performance, sang, that's all.
Una ejecucion sin poder alguno. Cantada, pero no sentida.
fabrizzzio48 3 years ago
Tiresias1984 3 years ago
fabrizzzio48 3 years ago
kunfusinger 3 years ago

kunfusinger 3 years ago
WHAT ARE YOU ALL SAYING! He is amazing! Yes, he has a light voice (which you foolishly call a child´s voice) but his technique is unparalled and his high register and voice is the best of all the tenors around at the moment. No current tenor can touch him

Heraopera 3 years ago
dude its because he is leggerio.

Saludos.
lavoreano 3 years ago
That being said, I think how much he moves is distracting - he needs to relax because it makes it seem like his face and neck are tense.
Would still pick Pav over anyone else.
peduzzi89 3 years ago

For anybody reading me, I much rather prefer Rockwell Blake's commanding version of this aria.
fabrizzzio48 3 years ago
Fabrizzio-You're entitled to like whomever you want. I have seen Blake on several occasions. In my opinion Blake sounds like a pig's squeal when he reached the top. The timbre of his voice is irritating. I don't hate Domingo. Get over your binary logic if you can help it. I have no respect for his artistic prostitution and debasement of opera.
TheInquisitive4Ever 3 years ago
I am reading, and you just told someone they're an asshole for criticizing your opinion and then went ahead and criticized someone else's opinion. This guy must be doing something right because he performed the first encore (with this piece) in 74 years at La Scala and the first in 14 at the Met. Leggiero tenors don't need sheer power. His voice can be heard in the back of even the largest opera houses because of his fantastic placement. His agility is breathtaking.

Some of popular musicians said that he will be the next generation best tenor and fill up the pavarotti's place. However, unfortunately he has so high tone voice naturally which can't be same as greatest king of tenor ,pavarotti who could sing low to high note fluently

His voice is a lyric, Domingo is a spinto, very different voice type. This is very fine and he sings it tomorrow at the met on a brdcst. and has done it last week with an encore and sang it twice in a row!

Quanto a Gedda, lasciamo perdere...
