Simplicity is not stupidity, but busy playing does not always represent insecurity. Imagine if Steve Jordan played drums for Jeff Beck. Sometimes the music calls for more!
@MrJohnnycrabcake Yes he knows lol it was a very popular thing for black people in the (I want to say) 70's and there are people who still do it. Steve Jordan being one of them
@sentient07 What? It sounds great... it's very subtle, nearly a straight quarter note beat.. provides the solid foundation that he mentioined, and leaves room for the other instruments. It's not a drum solo you know... Just awesome sound, consistancy and groove... that is not boring! you cannot make a shuffle sound like that, never!
i'm no goddam rookie. i play in a bluesband and yes, believe me or not, i can pull off a similar shuffle. coincidentally, i started playing with quite a similar approach as steve's: groove focussed playing with little emphasis on fills, and that's what i'm still doing today. i'm not good at fills, but i manage to groove. the reason is that i never had the intention to profile myself with big, fancy drumkits and exaggerated playing, like that idiot cobus or travis barker.
if you read my very first post carefully, i never said steve's playing is boring, but the overall result. hence the whole song, with all musicians involved. and this *is* boring as hell, it's like some trivial funk you hear at commercials or in porn. there's no dynamics and no energy whatsoever. my original point.
@hiphopsucks96 Seems like it, the shuffle has a solid 4/4 bass drum, played pretty lightly. The cross stick groove is faster and more powerful so he pounds it heel up..
At my school, if we aare in Jazz Ensemble, we had to choose every semester a artist we would like to study based up on their technique n style. Im a percussionist and I studied Steve Jordan this year. That pocket drummer, got me groovin'. The world will be better with pocket drummers.
steve jordan is my influence for playing stuff simple. before i thought i was the best drummer ever, and do fills every other measure thinking i could get away with it. thanks to this guy, my drumming has gotten so much more mature. thank you steve.
I agree "simplicity is not stuppidity", absolutely true. And in certain songs you must play steady. But in the otherhand; "does only holding a beat makes you a good drummer"? There are so many people who think they can play drums untill they have seen a real drummer (somebody who can do a lot more on a drum than "just holding a beat". Creativity - not only capable of playing 3/4 or 4/4 beats, being able to play different styles; rock, jazz, latin, blues. makes you according to me a good drummer
Not only did the camera shaking at 1:03 start to give me a headache, but every three seconds I had to look at that nasty "fro" pick of his. Luckily his drumming and snare drum are awesome!
"If a beat feels good you could hear a song before any other instruments are even played" sooooooo true. In my books this guy is second only to Elvin. All about the pocket, I love it.
Visit fhtmclassaction dot info for a copy of the latest D&B report of FHTM. They do NOT have a 3A1 rating and have not since 2004. What a surprise that is....hehehehehe
i'm 15, and i play the blues on the guitar. it sucks because most all drummers my age are only interested in metal. i don't understand why more 15 year old drummers don't try to play this stuff.
@lukeykookey yeah i wouldn't know because i don't play the drums haha. but still... can't they refrain from playing as hard as they can and just stop with the double bass pedal? i just wish people aren't so impressed with speed and complexety. you know?
@AndrewDavisMusic I can totally relate to that, except on my end it's more of people not being interested in Jazz, I think jazz drummers are some of the most skilled drummers there are but people our age are only interested in metal and really fast stuff.
Keep up the blues man, there aren't many of us left.
@thatguyoverthereFTW i play jazz too! ohh well... i am sure there has got to be some non metal drummers out there, maybe i am just not looking hard enough haha
@AndrewDavisMusic i'm sixteen,i play drums and i love to play jazz, blues, funk, etc! but I also play metal, in fact i try to play as much types/styles and genres of music as i can to expand my drumming knowledge and technique! :) (but i only play true metal) :)

Right when you think you are getting pretty ok at you're craft, go back and listen to Steve Jordan. You are brought down a few levels and back to reality.
i so agree, less is more. But it's also a pretty genre based question, i think. You just can't play on a Allan Holdsworth album playing less, just laying the grooves, and if you just dinga chicka ding through a whole jazz standard it will sound corny, i think you all can agree with that. So i tend to say "Play what's appropriate for the music" instead, that describes it better atleast for me ;)
@PaxAmor1 - I know...a good example of the OPPOSITE of what he's saying is that Aries Spears video that's at the top of "suggestions" after this video - super busy gospel/church-fueled drumming (that has infiltrated especially the R&B/rap game) at its worst. Spears is in the pocket as long as he keeps playing that groove, but as soon as he starts doing the fills, his time is all over the place.
@samsamba08 Aaron Spears plays pocket....it's just his musical director gives him that freedom because Aaron knows where the 1 is and he can trust the band that they have enough internal time as well to do what he does.
But in his DVD "Beyond the chops" he talks about how he doesn't always chop out and he plays "the song" ....
"If you just try layin' in the pocket and playin' the groove, without even playin' any fills...just lay it in the pocket...lay it in that groove....you try it...."
Such a cool cat. Looks and sounds great even when he is standing outside in the leaves with no drums, no sticks...and then that shuffle he plays next. Good LORD that is FUN-KEE!
Steve is the guy i try to get my students to listen to more than any other drummer. Most of them however are to young to get it but in years to come when they're an old fart like me they'll accept that the groove is all and Jordan, Gadd, Garribaldi, ?uestlove and Kennedy are the nuts. I'm sorry if i left anyone out.
I completely agree. I think funk is i the space between the notes. I like what he said about foundation. It is so essential and gets passed over so quickly by most new students. And a good pocket is like a meditative mantra.
This is good advice. It is important to first be able to keep good time and know where the pocket is. And simplicity can be remarkably effective. Leaving open space can be very powerful, its something that I'm going to start trying to incorporate into my music more often.
The magic is in the simplicity. IF you have the capability to feel rhythm, then you can feel that he is providing something extra... That's what makes him so good. Him, Carter Beauford, JJ Johnson, and Chad Sexton all give me that vibe.
lol everyones taking it out on kgj08, but u gotta appreciate, how good he applies the groove and how tight he plays, and with the amount of big names he's played with obviously, they dont think 'He's not very technically skilled at all'
I know that I'm going to get a lot of thumbs down for this comment... but there was nothing special here. He's not very technically skilled at all. He was playing the ride on that shuffle on the 1, 2, 3, and 4. He didn't do anything that a drummer of 8 months couldn't do.
he doesn't give a flip if people think his playing is "technical" or not. that is where drumming for the sake of the music is lost for most drummers. being impressive technically has very very little to do with ones ability to be musical.

@kgj08 You're completely missing the whole point of his playing. No drummer that's played for eight months could play that shuffle with any slightly close to the groove he does. You know what? Most players of ten years couldn't either. The technically challenging part is in the note placement, the ghost notes and accents etc. If you want to see a drummer just play drumistic crap go watch Thomas Lang, if you want to watch a drummer play MUSIC, watch Steve Jordan groove.
LOL @ saying a person who'd be playing for 8 months could play as good as this, what an utter load of nonsense. I would happily put money on you not being able to play anywhere close to this.
Saying Teddy Campbell is a better drummer than Steve Jordan only makes you look like more of an idiot too.
@kgj08 Sorry but you dont get it do you? Thats not something anyone could do. A shuffle can be played I countless different ways - and Steve Jordan is a true master. If you dont feel the groove I dont think you know what your talkin about.
Oh Man what incredible focus to stay on the groove! I saw Steve play with John Mayer in Sydney last night and Mr Jordan was seriously hypnotic. Peace!

Stop discussing music.

@kgj08 Sorry but you dont get it do you? Thats not something anyone could do. A shuffle can be played I countless different ways - and Steve Jordan is a true master. If you dont feel the groove I dont think you know what your talkin about.

Yeah, man. His John Mayer Trio Stuff is what got me into him. Wait Until Tomorrow is eargasmic. He uses his signature snare a lot. Yamaha makes it.
