The catchment area of the Abukumagawa river is 5.4 billion square meters (5400 km2). This means, each day, each square metre of soil leaks into the river, just 32 Bq.

However, Cs-137 / 134 are usually retained in soil. Assuming 1% is leached per year (0.0027% = 1/36500th per day). We get an average contamination of

32 x 36500 = 1,000 KBq per m2

About, as expected, this is the same as the Chernobyl exclusion zone. That area should be evacuated.

175 GBq is about the same radioactivity as 10 tons of uranium per day. Also, if one estimates the river's catchment area, flow rate etc. it would be easy to backtrack and calculate the soil's contamination level and a whole bunch of other interesting facts the government's hiding.

If you want the proper pronunciation of "El Hierro", then it's basically like this:

Of course, the 'R' sound must be "rolled" since it's Spanish. Also, the "air" part is the accented part of "El Hierro".
