@Kalam1ty89 Using a pick is a matter of tone. Or a matter of style of music you want to play. This would be impossible to play with fingers and the tone would be different.
@RancidPunk93 freeman, rocky george(suicidal tendencies), chris cash( no ca$h), and the drummer for the bouncing souls, would be like the most amazing band ever
wow johnnyrapesboys or whatever your name is. do you know anything about bass or live sound for that matter? if you rolled off all the lows and maxed mids and highs it wouldn't sound even close to this. that "punk" sound comes from minimizing your mids similar to setting up a slap style tone. new strings help too. btw, why comment on this vid just to hate. pathetic
Hi hankblowsgoats. Really, Matt uses a slap bass EQ? I'd never have known to be honest because all I can hear is the trebly grinding of strings with his plectrum and little or no bottom end. I'll go hit those sound engineering manuals and do some study so I can nail that Freeman 'sound' now. Thanks.
I think that Matt certainly is an exceptional player, and definitely one of the best out there right now. However, I would not call him THE best; first, I would go through John Entwistle, Jimmy Lea, Billy Sheehan, Steve Harris, Gerry McAvoy, Geddy Lee, Flea, John Myung, Jack Bruce, Jaco Pastorius, Geezer Butler, and a bunch of others. Which is not to say, of course, that Matt is not totally wicked-awesome. Because he is.
This is going to piss a few people off but I'll say it anyway. There is no real talent on display in this clip from Freeman. It's sloppy shredding at best. It reminds me of something St. Sanders would do. There's virtually no technique in his left hand at all (just sloppy runs with little dexterity) and he just goes hammer and tongs with a plectrum in the right hand. Being in the punk genre (where energy & attitude are rated higher than technique) is his only defence. Sorry but that's my opinion
I completely agree. He might as well not even use his left hand. His technique is horrific with is left hand. This is all pick; not much musical talent on display.
May be true w/ regard to this solo, but he is an amazing player all around. He originally learned in jazz style. Of course he's going to put a punk twist on it though.
There is certainly no evidence of jazz training in this clip. This clip would put me off wanting to see any more clips from the guy to be honest. He can run through basic scales at reasonable speed with his left hand but there's just no skill in his right hand... just sloppy pick shredding; he sounds like a guitarist trying to play bass. Where is the groove, space, articulation or feel?
so have you ever actually listened to a rancid album? go buy, DL, steal- Rancids first self titled. "out come the wolves" and "Life wont wait" are also great but i like it before lars was in the band because matt had to do more stuff to fill in for lack of a second guitar.
I've listened to some of their albums... I'm sorry but I just don't think they're any good. To be honest though I haven't listened to bar-chord driven punk music since I was about 17, it just doesn't do it for me anymore. I find it musically boring and the lyrics just annoy the fuck out of me.
Listen to his playing w/ Operation Ivy and tell me that. It's obvious he was trained in a jazz style early on; there's no other way he could learn all those crazy techniques.
"Blues," lol, who the f even learns how to play "blues bass," it's like the same five notes over and over again.
yea its atchully blues ya prick, sutch as in songs like journy to the end of the east bay he plays from a pattern sutch as :3-2-0 or 5-3-2,tipical blues bassing, and just becous most bassist in blues bands do pretty simple styles dosent meen he dosnt(blues bass is about walking),he has a form of technique that is almost the opisit of jass becous jass players dont usualy have any its all of there heads.
Matt Freeman is possibly one of the best bass player in the world right now, especially in the genre of punk rock. It is near impossible to compare him to funk players such as Flea. These two men are my inspiration.
U don't need vintage gear to get that tone. Not sure what amp he's got but, it sounds like a solid state w/ 10 inch speakers - probably 8x10 cab. He's using a Fender Jazz bass and probably has both pickup pots (knobs) & boost pot turned up. On the amp, roll up the highs and the lows w/ the mids just up enough to give it some presence. Make sure the action on the bass is set really low & play HARD & FAST w/ med to heavy pick. It's more HOW you play than what you have.
This is good advice. I've been trying to get this kind of tone with my jazz bass and i've come pretty close. As you said, lots of highs and lows with the mids cut a little bit. New strings help a lot too.
Some people like a more traditional bass tone, I don't. I like an aggressive sound that cuts through well as Freeman's tones almost always do. Its not for everyone apparently. I wouldn't judge Freeman from just this one video or even any of his solos alone there are too many Rancid songs with great lines to mention. I recommend looking at the actual songs and not just one live video.
You want to sound like Matt Freeman? 1. get a cheap bass; 2. Get a shit amp with no bottom end (a guitar amp will even do seen as we have no interest in the bass tones); 3. Turn all your mids and trebles up; 4. play with a plectrum (taking care to scratch the strings as much as possible when you play out of time)... voila.
Matt uses an overdrive foot switch for most of Rancid Five. Gives it that extra crusty sound. But for the ska and reggae sound you need a nice warm and booming bass sound.

I like it, but i would like it more if it weren't just single note repetitions/basic scales throughout most of it. Still, it does sound pretty kick ass
hes tight because there are a lot of notes (ish) and you can actually feel the groove. I am digging it and I am a straight up note lover. I love tons of notes with weird keys that are all like 24th-64th notes. fast and crazy for me, but this is good
This guy sucks. A pick? For real? So he can just play really fast. Big whoop. Not very impressed.

Maybe Matt Freeman is not the best bassist in the world, but i think hes at least in the top 10. But one think for sure is that hes the best bassist in Punk.

It's a tie between Freeman, Claypool, Flea, and Evil J.
Awesome stuff

I like it, but i would like it more if it weren't just single note repetitions/basic scales throughout most of it. Still, it does sound pretty kick ass

Ehh....its alright I guess. I mean he is talented and fast but his solos sound WAAAAAAY to repetitive and long for its own good.

i don't know who the fuck is Ryan Martine, but Matt wins.

Ryan Martine is the bassist for mudvayne, he's great at slapping.

hes tight because there are a lot of notes (ish) and you can actually feel the groove. I am digging it and I am a straight up note lover. I love tons of notes with weird keys that are all like 24th-64th notes. fast and crazy for me, but this is good
