abenice- I believe you meant to say the Grandmaster Helio fought Vale Tudo. As far as Bruce Lee is concerned, you have much to learn. I am a student of Jeet Kune Do and other arts including Gracie Jiujitsu, and if you do some research you can see that Bruce was a champion boxer in Hong Kong and won all his fights by KO in the first round. He also had several street fights that came from challenges and yes he won those as well. Several martial arts champions who he trained became champions.

There were many Martial Artist that were taking ideas from ohter styles and using it to strenghten their own style. Chujon Miyagi, Mas Oyam, Richard Kim, and many others. Where do you think Bruce Lee go his ideas from.

We have never seen that fight, did he fight champions during his time other then in cinema no. Did he fight chuck norris (a champion) no, Joe Louis no, Benny Uquidez no, Bill Wallace no! So what he is know for are some urban mythes and concepts which he got from taoism, and books that he read. They werent his ideas they were borrowed from others. Especailly when it comes to Wing chun. Lets not make him out to more then he was.

@abenice I want to say to you that bruce lee was a streetfighter, not a tournament fighter. there is a big difference. in the streets they are no rules. they asked chuck norris if he was ever in a real fight. he said no. yet he was a champion.

My point about bruce is that in his day the closest you could get to a real fight was what Joe Louis, Benny, and wallace was doing he never did that! How can you call a man the greatest martial artist and the godfather of MMA and he never fought sport karate. I might consider given that title Helio Gracie who actually did Valturo long before bruce talked about it. That is a fact, so I don't know why everybody is mad at me. Look it up the evidence is there!

I guess, the problem is that bruce lee made the martial arts a household name. he was like elvis to rock n roll. there were other people that came before elvis, chuck berry, little richard etc. but, elvis made rock n roll a household name. you have to admit, bruce lee was ahead of his time.

I agree in some ways he was ahead of his time and he may very well the most influential martial atist of his time. I dont want to take anything away from him but at the same time I dont want to make him out more then what he is. He is already great by hmself, why exaggerate? He influenced me and wasn't born during his generation I just did my research. I think some people who shoot insults my way don't know the facts they just go off what other people say. that to me is just dangerious!

you are right, people need to do some research to understand. I spoke to jim kelly (enter the dragon, middleweight champion) and I asked him the same question about bruce. he told me that he had long arms and he was very fast. and he believed if bruce wanted to compete in tournament fights he would have done very well. I also, spoke to some tournament fighters, alot of them didnt like bruce because of the blackbelt article he wrote about styles.

I read that article and it was very insightful. People tend to disagree with him about what he had to say about kata. I disagree as well but i see his put of view. The thing is that you cant plant apple seeds and expect to get oranges especially with kata. know the benefits and he or she will reap the rewards!
