Most of her songs deal with love and friendship. 99 Luftballons deals with the crazyness during the Cold War when someone send 99 air ballons to the sky near the inner German border and the border guards on either side thought the others were planning an attack which made them use nuclear weapons. It deals with death, destruction, political hate etc. during the 1970s and 80s.
