I am SOOO sick of ppl saying Halle won an Oscar for playing a "whore". We saw her have sex with one man, one time (or was it two?) and she ended up with the guy. Now I'm not condoning the Oscars overlooking great, strong roles for Black ppl & awarding them for stereotypical roles nor did I think that the role was "Oscar worthy", but ppl calling HB's character a whore simply for having sex (with ONE man) is so ridiculous.

@Arthro92 Paula Patton's looks are flexible enough to where she could have played either Lena or Dorothy convincingly enough. Halle, however is visually more similar to Dorothy everywhere from body type, skin tone, facial features, etc...and Dorothy's best friend Geri Branton was literally taken aback the first time she met Halle and couldn't believe it because of the resemblance....and in my opinion Halle literally looks like Dorothy brought back to life from scene 1:54 to 2:07.

@user00975318642 Janet has a striking resemblance to Dorthoy Dandrige and she had previously expressed an interest in playing her. Therefore, she would have been a viable choice for the film. But, Halle did a great job and she was the right one. Paula Patton, as you mentioned before wouldn't have been AT ALL APPROPRIATE for the role.

@user00975318642 No she doesn't. The right actress was selected to play Ms. Dandridge. The only other appropriate choice would've been Janet Jackson, but I think she's a bit too busty. Paula Patton has yet to prove her acting ability.

I met Obba Bubatunde! He plays Harold Nicholas (Dorothy Dandridge's 1st husband) SO handsome, and such a gentleman, he said I was "the most stunning woman at the awards" and then he gave me his business card! :-) It was the Ovation awards and he was nominated. Unfortunately he lost :-( that show was rigged. Debbie Allen Phylicia Rashad and my friend didn't win and they're great!

No disrespect at all to Marilyn because I'm a huge fan, but it's just women back then women were very discreet about how they became stars or to get where they wanted, they may not have liked it or thought it would last but that's how it was. If you are presented as a whore on screen in front of millions of viewers, that becomes part of your personal reputation, and it follows you through life.

@kennesaw1 No offense, but I think the fact that she insinuated sex with Billy Bob (some of the most convincing sex I've ever seen in a film) shows the diversity of her talents. She has played super heros, Spies and so many other roles. I think her willingness to have sex on screen shows her commitment to her craft and the lengths she will go to challenge herself. Let me ask you, Angelina Jolie had very graphic sex in Original Sin with Antonio Banderas. Would you call her a whore?

@60microphonemajesty . Since this was a TV movie, the Emmy she received was the TV equivalent of the Oscar. Oscars are only given for feature films released at the cinema. Her performance here was a lot better than the one she received the Oscar for but I'm glad she at least got an Oscar finally.
