However, there are many other western democracies where more than two parties are present largely because of more developed voting systems which support more than two parties.

In the short term though, no matter what happens, America is going to experience some very dark times. Stimulus packages aren't gifts from God (if there is one or more). Certain individuals pay, sometimes against their will, when stimulus packages are passed. In fact, "stimulus" as a descriptor is such an obvious euphemism that I'm surprised it's lasted in everyday language.
Remember: stimulus packages 1) come at a cost, sometimes hidden, and 2) treat the symptoms, not the cause.

Well the Republicans tried to kill the filibuster at the height of their power and arrogance, so I'm not sympathetic to that argument one damn bit. The Democrats wouldn't have all that power were it not for the corruption of the Bush admin and the Republicans. If they abuse their newly bestowed power, they will be punished as well. This is familiar territory for the Democrats, though. They controlled Congress for 40 years, and it's not the first time they've had a supermajority in Congress.

I believe in healthy opposition as well. In fact, I believe the Govt should ALWAYS be split between the two parties, but when parties screw up they get punished. It happened to the Dems in 1994. Of course not all of their policies will be successful, but given their track record versus the Republicans, I believe they'll do a much better job than the Republicans have over the last eight years. The Republicans don't care about anything but getting back in power at all costs.

Filibuster proof ONLY if ALL democrats vote the same way. Specter is now a very conservative democrat, and there are enough of those already. (Rachel Maddow calls them "conservadems).

I foresee a new party arisen from the ashes of the republican party. They'll be moderate conservatives who will probably just leave the party all together and try and form a new party. At least that be intelligent of them to do so but I imagine it be a monumental undertaking to establish it. Although now they'll be weaker than ever because they'll begin to split the republican vote.

Simply not true. There are plenty of examples of two-party systems with little or no major policy differences, maybe with less influence of big money but largely similar. However, there are many other western democracies where more than two parties are present largely because of more developed voting systems which support more than two parties.

Canada has 2 main ones(Liberal, Conservative) then about 2 minor ones (Green, Bloc Quebequois) and one in the middle(NDP)

you do realize obama is loseing support faster then bush. your party lost its last chance, and the only card they have left to play it to cheat the system to stay in power. i wouldnt be supprized if there is a crackdown on political opisition whether its the fairness doctrin or cap and trade misuse (by that i mean he gives out favors to everyone so they support him and receive free carben credits)

do you not understand the legal process. there are rules and laws that kind of prevent presidents from passing anything they want. also it wouldn't matter if he got the republican nomination or the democratic. It won't change how he votes. besides the republicans aren't willing to play ball with the "elitist" democrats so why not screw them over. i'd rather have 1 party that gets things done than 2 parties that can't do anything.
