I have to disagree with the masses here, we need Pelican Bay Prison. Pelican Bay houses the most violent type of criminal, how do you reform someone who believes in living and dying by the sword and is determined to bring down with them as many as possible? I grew up in Salinas and know all about gang life, and it's devastating effect it has on the community. Some people are drawn to this way of life and there is little you can do to change it. The saying is smile now cry later.
@eddiecamacho1 Violence usually has nothing to do with how someone gets put in PBSP. SHU is punishment after you're sent to prison, regardless of your conviction, and the most in SHU haven't broken any serious rules. They are being punished/sentenced to SHU without a trial or any real evidence. And long-term isolation has been shown to increase violence in prisons.
Why do we "need" PBSP? Built in 1989, did it solve the gang problem? If you're seriously concerned you'll work for real solutions.
@mimprisons Who cares a flying fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why don't spend your time helping kids to stay off the streets and stay in school instead your time prisoners. They had their chance they ruined it. The kids are the future
Isolation is by definition inhuman. I support this struggle and hope it does spread to so many of the other prisons across the US who have isolation units. I will be contacting the politicians I know of in California, NY, and DC. I recognize the voice on the video of one of my AFSC colleagues, Bonnie Kerness, who's been working on this issue for decades. Hi Bonnie! Jack Patterson
Thanks for sharing this info & please check out: prisonerhungerstrikesolidarity (dot) wordpress (dot) com for updates & ways to show support from the Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity coalition--these folks are in contact w/ prisoners on a weekly basis & working to build support for prisoners at Pelican Bay and Corcoran. We're also organizing international solidarity actions on July 9th--check the site for more info!
@slickrickjohnson Yeah, check the campaign info link in the description.
Let the administration know that we support the striking prisoners and that we're paying attention. They are putting their lives on the line, so our letters and phone calls can make a big impact over the next few weeks. Addresses are listed on the campaign page. You can also download fliers from the link to distribute and let people know it's going on. Support MIM(Prisons)!

Yes you are right, we from Germany like your California 3 strike law!
Nobody talk about the victims of this animals, there is no need for
rehabilitation. This is part of being in state prison, we dont care about
the living conditions inside this walls. Stand up for the innocent familys
who have to bear the concequences of the ruthless crimes! This gang-
banger deserve to be in the SHU, dont forget who they are and what
they have done outside.( sorry for my bad english )
