@keo774 Not to blaspheme, but I always think McLaughlin solos like Coltrane. That is why I place them in my mind as being on par with no one else close (well Oscar is included).
Guitarist Carl Orr: "I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Follow Your Heart - John McLaughlin song by song.” The descriptions of the music are great, and I particularly enjoy those inspired moments when the author abandons literal description and describes the music in vivid, sometimes surreal imagery."
I have been a HUGE fan of John M. since the day Birds of Fire came out and just blew my mind. But nowadays, as brilliant as he is, and I say with a heavy heart, he has become the one thing I NEVER thought this musician could ever be; predictable. At least in his live performances, I'm just not hearing the innovation I expect. It's your fault John! You set the bar so damn high it's finally become a reach for even you. Bless em all, these guys.
The thing at 0:41 fucking rocks. Love the part where Vinnie rides on the china from 0:59 through to around 1:26 too. Then shortly after that there's the metric-modulation thing between him and John at 1:30 that is just utterly brilliant musicianship. I hope 5PB (with Vinnie) come to the UK again sometime.
an easy one modulation triplets interpreted as 8s, but a cool one, i love the modulations that gavin harrison does of quintuplets or septuplets going whatever place he wants. vinnie also is a kind of god lol.
I've been a huge JM fan since '72 and have seen him live 6 or 7 times through the years - he is a guitar God - but he hasn't done anything to really excite me since The Free Spirits, well, except for Remember Shakti. The most ineresting thing about Johnny these days is the incredible sidemen he surrounds himself with. I passed on the Dallas show last night....just can't get it up for the same old songs and licks.
Big mistake! I caught this group in Chicago, and you're right: the sidemen made it worth every cent. Brian Blade and Kenny Garrett left Chick and John in the dust.
you blew it. jm is not what he was, he peaked back in the day with mo, but still one of the best out there. i was too also skeptical, if you listen hard and enough many times, there is still the jm there that you want to hear.
Then you blew me. No, I don't think he "peaked" during MO. Nobody is what they were, dude. I just don't want to have to listen hard to enjoy it, I want it to come easily, and this sounds like the same old recycled stuff he's been doing the past few years.

hate when mclaughlin start playing that 16th notes..... it so nothing and boring! is that the only way for him to climax every songs? i think he should play tabla instead...
Well i caught this show last night, and yes after being spoiled by seeing Holdsworth, DiMeola and Metheny last year, ill have to agree, reluctantly, just a little bit. John isnt not as all over the place and it seemed the majority of his tension came from just 16th note burst runs. It was still a greaty show and he played very well, but it was not as dynamic as id hoped for. But hey its not 1975.
What do those snares sound like? I'm looking at buying one off a friend in the U.S, he's gonna bring it to Aus with him when he coems to visit his mum, except his is a 14"x8" ... It looks fantastic, but I have no idea what it sounds like ...
I imagine the 8" depth will make the drum sound quite a bit fatter than the one VC is using in this clip.
VC probably has both heads on this drum cranked pretty high, plus it's a more open sounding drum than what he usually uses. This is probably down to the fact that the shell is hammered, which helps to give the drum a fatter sound than his usual solid maple or steel snare drums.
I think you'll be happy with it anyway, Gretsch make brilliant quality stuff.
this band is pure skill and creativety

McLaughlin's other guitar... sounds ordinary (if it's not McLaughlin who's playing)
how I love the chorus effect from his signature guitar...

Well ProgRockas, Christian McBride is certainly on b, but most certainly not on db. I don't think that that fifth string counts as double. :-)

Vinnie is using Yamaha drum or Sonor ?
tiasonora 3 years ago
Gretsch
mydogkanskidrums 3 years ago
Vinnie is actually using a Yamaha 9000 set here from the look of it, presumably due to logistical problems.
Still using a 14" x 5" Gretsch Hammered Polished Brass snare drum though I think.
