@edspacely92 It's more than that dude - when my lot were playing it in the '90s we researched it - as far as we could verify its played through a Fender Bassman setup; you can take the out from 1 into 2: so you can feed in 1(bass heavy) signal, then out again into 2nd input through your FX(muchly distortion) & the amp blends them together: noisy+heavier when we did it though.... ;)
Take a listen to the posting " SYD BARRETT COVER VERSION - BEST EVER NO ARGUMENT ! Shotaway - No Use Trying " , a Coventry band's cover version from 1994 . Blimey it's good .
Syd wrote much like the Beatles. Like Lennon said about music. It doesn't always have to make sense.....It just needs to sound good. Music is art people. Art is not always understood. It's saddens me....the whole Syd story.
My favorite Syd line is "With eskimo chain, I've tattoed my brains all the way. Won't you miss me, wouldn't you miss me at all?"(Dark Globe) Eskimo chain is a pattern much like Celtic knot artwork. If f that's what's all over your brain then you've gone and got yourself some good shit...
I checked on the Soft Machine connection and its true that Hopper, Ratledge and Wyatt played on Madcap, although Wright Gilmour and Mason also helped. Former members Kevin Ayers and Daevid Allen were close to Syd thru playing at the Roundhouse together frequently. I am amazed that the band on 'No Good Trying' is Soft Machine, as it sounded to me so much like Floyd!
The looks of the video is like me being the toilet and watching my mum pee.... but i still love the song so much that my mind will explode!!! thumbs up!
"There is no use trying, said Alice; one can’t believe impossible things.
I dare say you haven’t had much practice, said the Queen. When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
cool thanks mate, I'm putting it on my FB profile right now ) Syd is one of the most underappreciated musicians ever. Keep them coming. We all need this, in fact, he was always needed, all these years.
Depression, and Loss of Inspiration, for whatever reason, led to Syd's decision not to write anymore...he was spun, but he could still write incredible songs. That said, alot of the solo stuff was written around the same time as "Piper", Syd wrote almost ALL his songs in an 18 month period.
I love Soft Machine (Robert Wyatt - drums, Mike Ratledge - keyboards, Hugh Hopper - very fuzzy bass) here. I remember reading somewhere Robert saying what an odd recording experience it was, Syd offering little or no direction--nearly anti-direction--as to his idea of the song's final form. Both words and music were apparently still in a state of flux even as the tape began to roll and the band began to play. It's nevertheless 1 of my 2-3 favorite Syd numbers. 2 bad this is all they did 2gether.
it's nice how david gilmour and roger waters held out syd's solo career. and also Dave was a real true friend by personally making sure that the royalties got to syd ok
I do not know to whom you have written your latest comment, but as far as this song concerns, the drums was played by Robert Wyatt of the Soft Machine.
Jerry was a very co-operative drummer for Syd's second solo 'Barrett' and he supported Syd's gigs even he was a member of Humble Pie in 1970.
The soft machine of course.. Robert Wyatt on drums.
Of course this was when he cared who played on the records.
Dave Gilmour played drums on one or two others on the follow up album. Must have given Syd a laugh.. he liked jokes.. jokes are good he said. nice vid cheers.
the great robert wyatt... now he plays the bass because he had an accident and couldn't continue playing drums. i was looking for RW's videos and remembered when he played this song with syd
I'm not sure Robert plays bass, but he plays several instruments. His main thing now is keyboards, and more recently trumpet and cornet. He can still do percussion from his wheelchair, just not a standard drum kit since he can't work the footpedals.
Yeah, but don't you wish he kept making music? He gave one of the most successfull rock bands in history their sound and identity, think of what else he could have done with his life.
Personally, for selfish reasons I do, but I also think a person should be allowed to do what they want. I'm not trying to sound egotistical or talk myself up in anyway here....but, I played original music for awhile, and I started to get in papers and noticed in public, and I stopped, because I realized I valued my privacy too much. I was on an extremly low scale compared to Syd, so if he wanted to jump out of the lime light, I'm glad he did, it's STRANGE when people you dont know know you.
thank you for your honesty.I am a musician myself and have long since given up the dream of fame.If you look at the examples it's clear that fame is a cheat.Bravo to Syd for stopping the ride and refusing the machine!

Syd and the Soft Machine is the band that never was. Had the guy not been so far on acid this would have been a much better direction for the Softs to pursue than the whole fusion thing.
is this the song where gilmour (as producer) had to flip the tape over and play it backwords for syd because he couldnt get it right the correct way? i just saw a recent special about syd and david was talking about that but i didn't catch the title of the song he did it for.
This mind-blowing number was Syd's most fully-realized post-Floyd song because of the help of (pre fusion-era) Soft Machine: Robert Wyatt (drum); Hugh Hopper (bass); Mike Ratledge (organ). Long Live!

I think this is one of those songs where Syd did the vocals and the riff and then the other Pink Floyd guys did the rest after listening to Syd's piece.
Thanks for your comment ,, my friend Mick was lucky enough to be taking photos in the studio when Syd was recording Madcap laughs and by his recollection i believe the guys from the SOFT MACHINE were playing on the track ,
@howardashleystorey It took soft machine several attempts to perfect their sound because syd wouldnt give a glue on where the key started for the beginning of this song and he would change his chords quit dramaticly, which in my opinion, thats what made syd different from everyone else who was playing music at that time and todays present time. But anyway, thats basically why this song was the hardest, because syd was being himself behind that beautiful instrument of his

why people get obsessed over celebrities. He hated the idea of people following him and the press writing all about him.
