  • His speaking voice is awesome but his singing is anointed by God himself.

  • Hi i don't know if you have it but could you post his song one more valley. I really love that song and i can't find it anywhere

  • Hi i don't know if you have it but could you post his song one more valley. I really love that song and i can't find it anywhere

  • I believe Wintley Phipps is still "sucking wind." He sang at President Obama's inauguration.

  • @MatrixHealing what does sucking wind mean?

  • I watched this DVD today and had to find this part to share on FB. So awesome! We were fortunate enough to be at this taping in New Orleans!

  • I played this for my mother, Ruth Butler, on her death bed...between this song and my daughter singing her favorite opera songs...Mom went to heaven with musice carrying her to the loving arms of Jesus.

  • To be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord.

  • You need to know what your business, your life looks like to you. How else do you know what you want or if in fact you actually get to where you want to go???? How will you know when you get there?

  • Thank you, Brother/Pastor Wintley Phipps I am so grateful to have grown and still be alive (and well) to get to "know" you---hear your testimony, teaching and beautiful music and call for us to serve knowing privilege comes with a calling. I love you and thank God for you. Continued Blessings. Amen!!!

  • I love this. I recited this at my grandmother's funeral. I still do not know how my voice held out and my emotion carried without overtaking me, the only answer is that Christ was standing with me. I still see my grandmother being carried to her enternal life with our Lord, what a glorious ride! The day I ride will be glorious and welcoming!

  • Bro Phipps is strong and alive ,glorifing God.

  • praise the lord my brother blessing

  • My family and I sat together the day after my grandmother Carolyn passed and listened to Go Down, Death. We wept then, I weap now, and both times I have heard this it has brought me comfort.

  • My mother died in February. I just remembered this poem and have heard it. Thank you, Lord.

  • i really like Mr Phipps, i grew up listening to him with my family in the 80s and now he is a staple in my home. i know that he is seventh day adventist, it bothers me that he implied that when our loved ones pass away, they go to heaven immediately. as Seventh Day Adventist we do not believe nor teach this. we teach the dead know nothing for there is no life in them. their spirit (Gods breath of life) returns to heaven from which it came. daniel 12:2, psalm 146:4, john 11:11-14, john 5:28-29

  • @NaturalDejaVu You do know that he is reciting a poem by James Weldon Johnson, don't you? He also recites Johnson's "Creation."

  • @NaturalDejaVu

Exactly...I just converted to the Adventist faith about a month ago and I know that. He could have used other words that would have been beautiful and true.

  • @foxxietrini I know brethren... you're right!!!!

  • This was my first time hearing this recently my mom passed away. Brought back memories.God bless

  • My great-grandma was named Caroline, and my dad tears up every time he hears this. She was 106 when she died. They recited this at her funeral, and even printed it in her obituary in the local paper. I have a clipping somewhere... Thank you so much for uploading this, now my dad can hear it anytime, and reminisce of the good times he had with her.

  • Very good!

  • Is Wintley Phipps DEAD ???

  • @vfra230185 no hes alive

  • @vfra230185 Thanks for your information man ;-)

  • Hahh. Nah. If he were dead, he and Sister Caroline would be rejoicing together...in the bosom of Jesus.

  • @vfra230185 No.

  • The Bible commands for salvation is to trust in Jesus Christ and him alone and what hehas done for salvation. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.(Romans 1:16). Jesus was born of a virgin, led a sinless life, was crucified and died, was buried, and on the third day he Arose!!! And all those that trust in Him alone are saved by grace and grace alone. Eph 2:8-9. Rom 3:23

  • @vfra230185 no, he is............RRRessssssting

  • this has made me cry it's so beautiful.

  • Amazing

  • right after i seen this video my mother passed away that's been about a year and a half. She died from cancer she was saved and knew where she would spend eternity.

This Video not only brings tears of sorrow but tears of joy thank you for this wonderful video he is truly blessed by God

  • hi... do u have this whole homecoming dvd? i'd really like to know who the female group is that sings right after this piece by Phipps. if u know it'll be greatly appreciated.

  • @mantie2627 i believe your refering to Charlotte Ritchie, Ladye Love Smith and Kim Hopper when they sang go rest high on the mountain. i've posted a video of that on youtube as well

  • Just want to say a heartfelt 'thanks' for such wonderful, inspiring videos. The messages given and the truth that is carried through the talent of Wintley Phipps...

    poweful!

  • What a gift he is!

  • Thank you hoover for sharing this, every time I hear it I am truly, truly blessed....God speed and happy trails....

  • This a beautiful poem and Pastor Phipps makes it come alive. I was inspired to do this poem at my aunt's funeral last year and many family members were blessed by it. Thank you both, Mr. Johnson, writer and Pastor Phipps.

  • It's a poem written by James Weldon Johnson and Wintley Phipps does a wonderful job telling the story. He also tells the story of "The Creation "by James Weldon Johnson.

I really enjoy watching his work.

    Way to go Pastor Phipps.

  • HardenJim... Wintley has ALREADY sung in God's presence... maybe not in front of his throne... but if you believe that God is, indeed, omnipresent then Wintley has surely sung in his presence.

  • God Bless the witness of Wintley Phipps, I pray Father that Wintley can sing 'Amazing Grace' in Your Presence. As a side note when Wintley tells the angel "Go down death into Yamacraw", it refers to a band of Indians called Yamacraw that settled in Savannh, Ga.

I dedicate this story to my amazing mother, who has 'gone on', Margaret Ollie Parvin Harden, who taught me the meaning of Jesus !!!!

  • What he said was great, and beautiful if you truly understand what it means.

  • Exactly it may not be perfect according to theology but it is beautiful and tells a wonderful message. It has helped me through the deaths of loved ones. Its helped to comfort my soul and ease my pain. It does what it is meant to do, a good deed to ease the hearts of those who have lost loved ones.

  • I think we all agree it's not theologically accurate but it is beautiful all the same. Especially when you've just lost a spouce, or you are 5 and just lost your mommy. I would like to think that's how my friend died; not afraid of death!

  • oxo7oxo, You have to listen, friend. You have to hear the words...this is a beautiful poem. That is what I was saying earlier, but I guess someone did not like it. God bless that person anyway.

    Shalom !

  • He is reciting the Poem "Go Down Death" by poet James Weldon Johnson 1871-1938

  • I played this for my mother on her death bed as she ventured into her glory. I love this and the fact that we know our reward. I love you, Mom.

  • I love his voice!

  • At first I thought that this was a wonderful little sermon on death until I got to the part where he spoke of Carolyn being in the arms of Jesus who wiped the tears from her eyes.

For those who know what the Bible really says about death know that this is false. The tears will not be wiped away until after the resurrection...See Revelation 21:1-4 and 1Thessalonians 4:15-17. Furthermore, the spirit that returns to God is not the person, but that which gave life to the body-the breath of God.

  • its not a sermon, its a poem - Go Down, Death by James Weldon Johnson

  • time is a constraint of our physical universe. not pertaining to the spiritual realm. The bible it's self declares that one year is like a thousand days and a day like a thousand years to God. The soul or spirit is the essence of our being, yes. but we are individual creations of God with the purpose of enjoying him fully and to give glory unto him who is worthy. God being the source of us does not discount our personal existence.

  • There's a time and place for everything and this is not the place for you to discuss your minor theological disagreements with the words of this poem

  • My friend, you are missing the point--LOL

You have to learn to listen carefully--and praise the Lord. Listen and learn--LOL

  • you have to understand that this is in the fashon of an african american sermon and that is how they looked at Jesus. May not be perfect, but man is it beautiful. Older african americans believed that Jesus was more accesible. oh to have that faith in modern times.

  • Michael Jackson? I HOPE he was a Christian... but, the lifestyle didn't prove it... anyway.

  • To Messymessam: Not so I have been an SDA for 40 years and find nothing in the poem out of place and as many text as you come up with I can come up with to refute you. The interpretation you give is your own. now Bible resting in the arms of Jesus is not I repeat not meant to be literal but refers to the rest in the grave.

Whitney Phipps is a SDA and he knows the difference between symbolism and reality a thing many SDA's have a problem with.

  • i am sorry to say that the seventh day adventist church the bible nor God does not support the views expressed in this poem. sister carolyn or anybody else who is dead is not or are not in Jesus arms. the dead is asleep in thier graves. no one goes to heaven or hell so to speak when they die they go to sleep and their breath goes back to God. whitney phipps is a seventh day adventist and should know better. i will return with texts to support my statesment.

  • If you bring biblical passages not something outside of the bible. The body dies but the spirit leaves the body.

  • LOL---Wish you could open your eyes and ears. You are not listening--Why not just learn not to argue or fuss about words ? Just Praise Jesus--your not very famialiar with poems. Just listen--and preaise God--LOL

  • Amen

  • This is wonderful I would like to say this poem to the Jackson family, take your rest Michael Jackson. To all his fans and family weep not, he is not dead, he is asleep, he is resting on the bosom of Jesus!!!!!!!!!

  • como faço para ter um cd deste cantor?? aqui em Portugal??? PLEASE, THANK YOU

  • this poem is blessed and loved

  • I LOVE this poem by JWJ ..but he forgot to say savannah Ga... But he did well .....i remember when my mom used to say this poem to me when i was younger.....

  • RIP Mr Phipps

  • i did not hear anything about him dying? as far as I know he's still alive

  • Its not him its his dad. I knew his dad.

  • @xXDWSFXx Pastor Phipps is alive and ministering.

  • Look at 3:40

4 of the people sitting behind him are dead.

Death came for them but it had no sting. They are rejoicing in the presence of our Lord.

  • for u people who are wondering who wrote this it was James Weldon Johnson

  • I find peace and great comfort in it, I lost my mother and father and Aunt in less than a year. My mother and Aunt both where saved. My father was not. my mother and aunt( Sisters) died with cancer. They had the peace of knowing where they where going.. It hurts me deeply that my father was not saved. My grandmother Right know is close to death. She raised me in church, in time it lead me to Christ. Pray for my Family. thank you much for the video

  • We recently used this at my granny's funeral. What a wonderful poem. Thanks for posting it.

  • This is a WONDERFUL video.

  • Just got word that a sister Christian passed away last night. She will be greatly missed. This is bringing me comfort. Thank you for posting. Rest with Jesus, Miss Mary Ruth.

  • As Christian Bible believers, when we die, we are asleep in Jesus and will remain so, until the 2nd coming of Christ. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, KJV). Thank you Wintley for sharing the truth of God's Holy Word. Amen.

  • I watch a cousin of mine pass from this world to the final home. This was read at her funeral with her in place of the other stuff. I never thought that I would hold someone hand as they went from this world. But I did with her I know she is in heaven and this tho it is very humbleing made her passin an easier thing

  • Sigh. To explain to those who want to be nasty - No, Wintley Phipps did not write this piece, and no, it's not in any version of the Bible or being added to the Bible. It's a very old spiritual piece. It simply says that death itself is a sleep in Jesus's arms. If you don't wish to believe this story on how one goes to Jesus, don't listen. Is it true? Got me. But having watched death come all too often, this seems like it may be a very close version. It's simply comfort, nothing more.

  • Just ignore the guy 'sp0rtzfan2009' I think it's beautiful and he can't change that some people get a kick out of "trying" to be different/difficult.

  • It is dangerous to add the the bible. This is what this man is doing.

  • okay, i'll ask one more time. what version of the bible?!? king james version??

  • Yes, King James version.

  • firstly, he didnt write this. secondly, if you dont like it then dont watch but dont try to ruin it for everybody else by sticking your nose up in the air.

  • Thanks for the fellowship, brother.

  • No, I am not sticking my nose in the air. There is only one Lord and we both worship him. We are supposed to share with one another.

  • not to be rude it's just this is a beautiful piece and i get kinda tired how there's always someone who has to come along and turn it into a negative

  • Hes not adding to the Bible

  • he is not adding to the bible. He is doing what all humans do. trying to make an understanding out of losing people. Just enjoy the piece

  • I never read this in the bible

  • its not in the bible

  • Is it true then?

  • this exact passage isnt in the bible know, but the meaning of it is. yes, it's true

  • The bible plainly states that death is a sleep. A state of unconsciousness

  • so you dont believe in heaven?

  • Also, there is no death angle by the side of God.

  • Yes, I believe in heaven but we will get there at the same time because of the resurrection.

  • i believe that when people die they go on to heaven and those who are still living when the resurrection comes goes on after. thats what i was raised to believe and thats what it says in my bible. so lets just agree to disagree i guess

  • the bible says that we shall perish for a lack of knowledge. my father was raised southern baptist during the civil rights movement. he was raised to believe when you die you go to heaven. then he met my mom and began reading the bible for himself, not just from what was being preached from the pulpit. beware that many preachers will not be saved. not to drone on, but you are my sister in Christ, and i just want to forward these verses to you. daniel 12:2,psalm 146:4.john 11:11-14,john 5:28-29

  • The scriptures are twisted to appeal to the masses but the masses appreciate the truth more so that poetic rhetoric.

  • what version of the bible do you read

  • I Cor. 15:50-54 states that Death will be defeated whwn Jesus come. Untill them we sleep in our graves. Also, those who are alive when he comes will be changed only then.

  • no i mean what version of the bible?

  • My brother is suffering with prostate cancer and his favorite song is Wintley Phipps singing "One more Valley" from the tape "I Choose you Again".

While searching the internet for the words to that song I stumbled on the video. Oh my what blessing it has been to me tonight.

Praise God for this amazing preacher. What a beautiful message about the passing of a saint. Thank you God, for Your Son!

  • Thank you soooo much for posting this. I plan to purchase it if possible. I lost my dear Father last month and cannot express in words the way in which this touched my heart.

  • WoW! WoW! WoW! WoW! What more can I say? WoW!

  • I'm not religious but I would go to this man's church faithfully every sunday. What a great entertainer. If this was a skinny frail man with a bad voice, speaking the same words, it wouldn't carry the power that Wintley possesses, and that's where the religion side falls short. but what an awesome performer.

  • Not only is this man an amazing singer, but he's an amazing PREACHER as well!!

What a beautiful message about the passing of a saint....

  • A beautiful and stirring account of what spiritually takes place at the death of a believer! The Christian's death is truly only a "sleeping in the bosom of Jesus," awaiting the resurrection! And even though Sister Caroline was weary from life, it wasn't her "work" that saved her: It was the Grace of God by Faith in Christ, which made her a child of God - a TOTALLY different situation than dying in unbelief! Thank you Wintley Phipps! Thank you God, for Your Son!

  • his voice reminds me of MLK. God bless.

  • I lost my grandmother a few years back. She was 98 years old and a brave soldier of the Lord.

I can see my grandmother in Jesus arms and resting after all her hard work.

Thank you for posting this video, and God bless you and pastor Phipps for a tremendous interpretation!!

  • When I listen to Pastor Phipps, I get a glimpse of what God must be like, I don't mean that in a blasphemous way,but he conveys the majesty and awesomeness and the sincere deep love and compassion of God..bless this good man,God uses him to bring glory to Himself..

  • Nothing like it. It is wonderful. God bless his ministry.

  • I remember the first time I read this poem in high school. I knew that it was an emotionally weighty piece, but I didnt truly under stand the heft. I thought it was merely "cool". After my mother died. The heft of it's meaning and significance hit me like a ton of bricks. Sometimes, needing comfort, I turn to this poem.

  • bess your ministry!!!

  • Hoover, I have been sitting here on YouTube for almost two hours and most of what I've watched, you have posted. I know it has to be a time consuming undertaking to do all this. Thanks. I enjoy the Gaithers very much. God Bless you.

  • this is excellent and super cristal clear message!!! Im speechless!!!

  • he perfectly captured the joy and sorrow and the million feelings inbetween at a loved one's passing. this always leaves me weeping.

  • Rev. Phipps is a blessing to us all. I thank God for letting me see and hear him. I've lost so many but I know they are with God and suffering no more.

  • i love this guy he is awesome

  • Thank you so much for this, My grandmother passed in my arms i asked GoD to allow me to be there when he called her home, she was at peace but Death picked her up like a baby, what Mr.Phillips was saying about was everything my grandmother did thank you so much!!! for this.

  • I listened to this, and thought about my dear sister who the Lord took more than 10 years ago. i was a preacher and left the ministry because of my anger towards God. I recently came back into the ministry, and I have to tell you that this video broke my heart. I broke down like I dont think I ever have and made my peace with God. Thank you Brother Phipps, thank you for answering a divine call. And thanks to who ever posted this on You Tube. God is an awesome God!

  • IF this does not touch your SOUL, You are already in the grave! He is like NO OTHER...It is MORE than JUST his VOICE! May GOD Continue to BLESS HIM!

  • This is a true blessing. I lost my father not so long ago to cancer, and since then I have had a heavy heart and have felt a void in my life. But, I am comforted knowing that he is no longer suffering and is in everlasting peace and happiness. His death was not the end, but rather only the beginning. Being in my 20s, I never thought that I would lose him at this age. Actually, I have not lost him, because now he is in a place to where he can be even greater for me. He is always in my heart.

  • this is one of the most cherished messages i have ever heard about death. thank u. god bless u

  • gives me chills.

  • I recently gave up my Father. I have shared the passing of others.

I am particularly anxious that this passing and all others become a blessing to the loved ones who are now "tempted" to "miss" them as though they and/or their love are somehow gone.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has freed me from the law of sin and of death.

We are not apart. They are "a part" of us.

  • I lost dad too and my heart goes out to you but this is comforting to know that we are not apart and that they are a part of us.

  • Beautifully spoken with such feeling and a blessing to all who have lost someone dear to them.

  • I lost my husband 15 months ago to cancer. We married his last year in college. Forty eight years we had together. Time since his going has seemed much longer. And this is the first thing I have heard that has taken the pain of the loss away, and someday I'll joyfully join him. Thank you Mr Phipps.

  • What a powerful voice!

  • My mom made me PROMISE to play THIS at her HOMECOMING service. Thank you for posting this!!! To EVERY viewer...May God Bless you an your family with peace of mind--even Right Now--In Jesus Name.

  • "...she is resting in the boosom of Jesus.." My 83 year old friend just lost his bride of 60 years and I sobbed all the way through this.

  • My Beautiful Sister, Tommye White is dying as I type this. I will recite this wonderful piece at her funeral. Thank you, Sir for this. I know, as it has brought me peace, it will bring peace to her husband, Jim and their children and all who knew her. I pray that it touches someone else as it has touched me and that they will give themselves to Jesus.

  • "...she's labored long in His vineyard..." No presumption of Heaven here... only a life lived in His grace. Wintely gives it a pathos with which we are not often blessed. What a fantastic presentation!

  • The finest poem and orator I've ever heard. I plan to show it on the big screens of my church for my funeral. Anyone know where I can acquire the written words?

  • Just do a Google search for Call Down Death, it was a poem written in the 1920s.

  • I'm not particularly religious, but I was moved by this narrative, particularly by Mr. Phipps delivery.

  • brilliant!!

  • Awesome!!! Thanks for posting.

  • awesome way to enourage those who have lost a loved one. I lost my friend of 30 years to drugs and this comforted me knowing she rests in god's bossom

  • i love the way he describes these like was really there. i'm beginin to love this man. i just found out about him and i'm glad

  • Me too, ezemdi, I only just discovered him today..surely God has called this man to glorify Him! I feel so close to God when He speaks..bless him.

  • I repeatedly send this to friends and family, so that when death comes, they are reminded that all that we do not know- HE knows... let HIM handle it... and fear not if we are doing the best we can, as HE wills. Ruby O

  • Oweee...owesome.

  • he's like 10times better than anyone that recites this..haha..i did this and got 2nd place in poetry recitation

  • This is awesome, I actually recited this poem in High School for an Improvisation course & won with this poem. It was truly an awesome & amazing peace! Enjoy it!

  • this is tha bomb :)

  • My God! What a Blessing!!!

  • This is the very best video I have received in a long time

  • Incredibly moving...the spoken, illuminated word of God!

  • This man is one of the most articulate men I have ever heard. Powerful, awesome, wonderful I cannot speak highly enough of this man.

  • It brings tears to my eyes, and joy at the same time. He knows how to grab your attention. Awesome

  • Although I'm not christian, I must appreciate his rhetorician skills.

  • Im looking for the word's to this. Thank you for posting

  • This reading as well as "The Creation" is from James Weldon Johnson's book "God's Trombones".

  • dude its awsome. im doing this for a compettition
