What do you mean? Have you ever seen or listened to Gobbi as Gerard? I cant remeber a it. Gobbi was Scarpia, Jago, may be Rigoletto, but I don#t think he was an unforgettable Gerard like Cappuccilli.

You might think so, I don't. You can compare Cappuccilli with Bastianini in this role. But each time has its special singers. How often did you see Cappuccilli or Gobbi on stage? You cannot compare only you tube appearances. I like Gobbi, but I don't think he would have been a better Gerard.

Almost broke character with the amount of applause. LOL! This is and will always be the best rendition of this aria, in my opinion. Milnes and ponns dont even come close. Forgive my terrible spelling.

I love Cappuccilli. Especially in Il Tabarro he does a great job, I put him to my favourite Micheles along with Tito Gobbi! :D

I prefer this version over Protti's. In my opinion, Cappucilli seems to have more dramatic variation between lines, heavily dependent on the meaning. I say this with the realization that I'm growing to be a fan of Cappucilli's work, as I grow in my own singing.

Oh yes, I also agree with you. Cappuccilli was really a fantastic baritone. He sang in the Unites States but only once at the Met. May be this was due to Sherill Milnes and a bit of jealousy.

He sang this aria amazingly at a gala in Vienna - checkout on YT: watch?v=c9hc-P3JugY&feature=re­lated (directly after Milnes had sang Eri Tu) and brought the house down with 2x amount of applause and bravi. It was the final showdown and final truth of who was the master! Cappuccilli rulez!

Yes this is true. I was present at this gala too. cappuccilli was the heroe of the evening and there were great singers there: Domingo, Ghiaurov, Baltsa, Gruberova, Nilsson, Rysanek..

Opera does not get any better than this! Cappuccilli is able to express every nuance of meaning, both with his voice and his physicality. He was without doubt, one of the greatest. Bravo!

This was a first night in Vienna in April 1981. Domingo sang Chenier. It was a great evening for Cappuccilli and Domingo.

Amazing! I have the complete performance on DVD and

the well-deserved applause for this aria goes on for

ages. At one point, Cappuccilli winks at Santi as if

to say, "We nailed it!"
