I know I thought it was a big hoax, and I believed the very plausible church documents I'd read. He was a scoundrel and a con-man and it's all a hoax to increase interest in a very remote and poor area.

Then I went there, and all I can say it there was a feeling about the place I'd not felt anywhere else. It is stunningly beautiful, but eerie, and it pains me, as a sceptic, to say that.

So now, maybe, I'm a little more open to researching further. And I'd recommend anyone else to go.

Honestly, if the Catholic Church leaders had any brains in their respective skulls, they would have levelled the church at Rennes, executed Sauniere, burned the documents in a fireplace in some clandestine office, and disavowed the entire event as a well-made hoax. To me, if the church is really denying it, there may be some truth behind their assertion.

Well that's what they have done countless times, but Sauniere wasn't some random 'heathen', this was a priest of a remote village. To kill him and desecrate the church would have been a great sin, and would have brought even greater attention to the area and scandal upon the church. So they might have decided that paying him off was a simpler solution. Secrets can always be denied, but if agents of the church were to kill a priest for no apparent reason people would have been very suspicious.

This documentary (and the research it seems to rely on) appears to suggest that Rennes le Chateau's design was meant to convey "The Passion" as just a pretense or grand contrivance that The Roman Catholic Church has, presumably, taken extraordinary steps to conceal.
