On the other hand I am yet to see even a single western person excel at Bharatanatiyam. I've seen a number of white women doing Kathak properly, maybe because the movements and expressions are more subtle in Kathak and similar to ballet. But never Bharatanatiyam and that is not for a lack of trying. A Ukraine Women, Nikolina Nikoleski, is the only one i can think of who really mastered in it, but even she comes off as stiff and too static at times. Now what should I infer from this?

@Varoonmg I'm sorry I was being sarcastic. Gymnastic is not really a dance, it is a calculating sport. Classical ballet has no taalam or percussion(drums). Hence there is no beat or life to the body movements. It might as well be a sport too.

Drums are considered the least refined instruments in Western Classical Music

and just as you are incorrectly applying Indian Dance Criteria to Ballet, many Westerners when applying Western Musical Criteria to Indian Music, find it coarse and gross...

@Varoonmg I knew that westerners consider ballet to be more 'refined' especially because of the loss of drums. But unlike what you say, I don't consider it as just a difference of opinion. Because ballet came into existence when french and italian aristocrats wanted to distance themselves from the common folk. So they acted all snooty and called it refined. Also unlike what you say westerners define Indian dances as 'rich' and 'highly complex'. You're clutching at straws here.

but most of them don't even know it exists, for them Indian Dance is limited only to Bollywood Jumping Around, and those same individuals who call Classical Indian dances as complex, make sure not to put it on the same level as Ballet

I'm not saying they don't appreciate it but for them it just sadly remains just "another" world dance, not on par with their refined arts

I don't think most Indians care. It is not their culture, so of course they give more importance to their own. That is normal, Indians do likewise too. The word 'refined' should be taken in the right context. It is frequently misused.

I'm not sure any Indian Dancer can perform Ballet

Just standing on one's toes requires years of practice

@Varoonmg Its really a good that you brought this up. I've seen quite a number of Indians doing ballet especially contemporary on Indian reality shows. They do it with clean lines and grace as expected in contemporary. In my opinion they come across as supple and more fluid than westerners. But, yes I haven't seen anyone here doing 'Pointe work'. Ballet isn't popular here, some learn it as they feel it is good for strengthening legs to do Indian Classicals.

@Varoonmg The Mime work that they do in ballet is like a tiny minuscule subset of the range of adavus done in Indian classicals. Both were the art forms of the upper strata in their respective societies. But still Indian classics have a wider appeal in their society. People who like ballet are considered 'artistic', as in boring or snooty, even in western countries. I think this is another reason why Westerners don't like dancing as much as Indians as all the dancers have ballet body language.

At a time in the West, the Non-Aristocrats and especially the youth wanted to rebel against the established order and that's why they cast Classical aside, but it still has a large following

Ballet might seem too rigid to you just like Indian Dances might seem too Devotional
