Professional law enforcement is a defiining factor of a civilized country, and a third world or developing one. Which law enforcement apparatus do you propose replaces the one you have in London? The Met is widely regarded as one of the very finest police services in the world and the model for nearly all others to embody.

For a city the size of London, and the numerous contacts the police have with citizens, CO19 has a VERY low "shoot rate" per capita, rarely miss when they do fire, and show much more restraint than most "western" countries including EU nations and the US. In the (considerably more violent) city of Los Angeles LESS than 1% of 1% (thats an FBI stat). Pretty amazing considering the guns/drugs/violence in that city. London is way safer than L.A..
It's a thankless task, but I'm glad some people are brave enough to do it. It's a good thing that we only have specialist units with firearms, if every police officer was given a handgun like a piece of standard issue equipment. There would be a greater chance more criminals would start arming themselves with more lethal weaponary.

CO19 are actually less trained than an average Army infantry unit in terms of firearms and fitness because realistically 90% of their job is about confronting armed goons.. not trained armies..

Well actually I spent 9 yrs in the Army and worked security in Iraq. I've handled firearms all my life and so will not shoot myself in the foot. However anyone living in the countryside like me would have to wait 25 minutes for an armed response team from the police to turn up. Nor can we own fire arms for our protection. Were supposed to rely on the government for it. Pure bull shit, the American approach is better and guarantees the individual's rights much more.

Far more difficult than the SAS, they have to learn how to approach people with guns without shooting them, because they get completely harassed by the media every time they kill someone.
They are in the eyes of the media all the time, whereas the SAS is behind closed doors and never shown in the media.

@Trustisaliability Did you really just compare CO19 training to SAS? Is that a joke? Since when do CO19 trainees have to perform HALO jumps, or trek through a jungle/mountain for several miles with loads of kit, or survive SERE (escaping from torture), ETC.
CO19 are actually less trained than an average Army infantry unit in terms of firearms and fitness because realistically 90% of their job is about confronting armed goons.. not trained armies..

Well actually I spent 9 yrs in the Army and worked security in Iraq. I've handled firearms all my life and so will not shoot myself in the foot. However anyone living in the countryside like me would have to wait 25 minutes for an armed response team from the police to turn up. Nor can we own fire arms for our protection. Were supposed to rely on the government for it. Pure bull shit, the American approach is better and guarantees the individual's rights much more.

Also it was New Labour that took away firearms from law abiding people in the UK in 1997. So now the only people in the UK with guns are criminals or coppers why can't a law abiding citizen own a fire arm? Gun crime quadrupled under new labour, yet states such as Israel and Switzerland that allow their people to own guns actually have much less gun crime. If someone was to threaten you in your home tonight, your only choice would be to wait for the police to turn up or be a victim.

Again firearms crime under new labour has quadrupled so how has this ban stopped crime? It has not. Try to analyse what people say when forming an answer. All the ban did was criminalise a law abiding minority who owned fire arms. It was a moral panic that led to bad, ineffective law.

The law does not ban firearms, it bans you from carrying a loaded weapon in public or an unloaded weapon that is concealed.
So in other words as long as you don't have a clip in it you could walk around with an MP5.

Only criminals and cops in the UK have access to firearms. That gives too much power to the state. The US constitution on the other hand balances the power better and safeguards individual rights. To buy a shotgun in Britain you need to hold a Shotgun Certificate, and to buy a rifle you need to hold a Fire Arm Certificate. You can ask for forms for these from your local police station.

Oh yeah the only exception to that that I would possibly envisage would be someone under a specific threat. Say Salman Rushdie, in those cases a form of concealed carry may be permissable. However it would have to be a very extreme threat and circumstances.

yeah but they are limited , automatic weapons and most semi automatics are completely prohibited and magazine size is also limited pump action shotguns are limited to three rounds i dont know about rifles but it would be limited to hunting weapons , also the weapon has to be above a certain length if u buy a shotgun legally for instance and saw it off then thats illegal an MP5 like your talking about would therefore violate several rules thus its impossible to own one under current gun laws

It is an offence to fire a gun within 50 feet of a roadway, public footpath or bridleway if by doing so any member of the public is endangered. It is an offence to carry a loaded gun in a public place without good reason. An gun may be considered loaded even if the bullets (or pellets in thecase of air rifles) are in a detached magazine.

I'm not sure I agree with you lads about every officer carrying a weapon. I live in Holland, pretty much every police officer here carries a weapon, and they have like zero authority. Having only a select group of officers actually carry a weapon will make them seem far more impressive. When these guys come over you're screwed.
