  • Was 16 years old when we lost some of rock n rolls greatest rock performers in the greatest rock band of our time in 1977. Lynyrd Skynyrd was my escape from all of the disco crap that was dominating the radio. Thank God we still have Lynyrd Skynyrd. RIP Ronnie, Allen, Billy, Leon, Steve, Dean & Cassie.

  • when the light hit the Mic stand Oh Man that was it for me :( i was bawling! LONG LIVE SKYNYRD and RIP Ronnie Cassie Steve Dean Leon And Billy :(

  • skynyrd will never be back. we have to go to them if we want that pleasure.

    FREE BIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 34 years and so many losses! Love Lynyrd Skynyrd old and new!

  • nothing makes me more sad, than hearing free bird, without van zant. one of the most depressing things ive ever had the fortune to witness

  • There is not many things that can make a grown man shead a tear. But what this band went trrough is unimagineable. The music they left behind, and the great ones we lost. I have huge amount of respect for the rest of the band who played without R.V.Z. I think I would brake down halfway through a song. Without him there live, errie. He was Skynyrd. That said, I play guitar and think singing is the easiest thing to do. Never cared much for singers. But he was irreplacable. There was only 1 R.V.Z

  • @MrPorsche91730 well today 34 years ago is when he moved on. left us with a great deal of good fucking music. thats more than most leave behind.

this song is like life. starts out slow, and by the time you relise your having a great fucking time. bam life is over

  • I had never watched this before, and about halfway through, I just started crying for all the friends- and FRYNDS!- that I- and we- have lost. God Bless them all! Thank God they're not forgotten!

  • I am so happy to find this here! Thank you for posting it. When I was a kid I listened and recorded the Volunteer Jams and KB Flower Hour shows all the time. I was practically in tears when the survivors came out and played this version. My tape wore out years ago and I have been trying to find this ever since. Little did I know that it was sitting right here all this time. I thought it was gone forever!! THANK YOU!!

  • I WAS THERE!

  • I luv Gary rossington

  • One of the greatest moments in Rock and Roll history!

  • what does Gary shove in the neck of his Les Paul? Is it a part of a screw driver or heavy wire or what? I been hearing different stuff?

  • @superlinkarts A drinking straw will get the job done. That's what he is using in the video above.

  • @shotgunsteve93 I'm missing something. Who's using a drinking straw? For what?

  • @shotgunsteve93 I'm missing something. Who's using a drinking straw? For what? Oh, on Gary's guitar? I see now.

  • cried my eyes out when ronnie wasn't there with them to sing

  • 1 guy died as he hit the dislike button. How could you possibly dislike awesome?!?

  • This is one of the GREATEST MOMENTS IN ROCK & ROLL HISTORY

  • so so sad and tragic. if it wasnt for that crash then Lynyrd Skynyrd would be the best band of today but ronnies last known words before he boarded that doomed plane were "if its your time to go then its your time to go"

  • wow, this is absolutely amazing. Thank God there are people out there who post these wonderful videos of the past, for the younger fans like myself (26) I sure do wish I had the chance to know Lynyrd Skynyrd and see them live. For some people The Beatles were musical Gods, for others it was Elvis, or maybe even Led Zep. , But for me Lynyrd Skynyrd were true musical Gods ♥ In my opinion Allen was the best Guitar player EVER Most of the band may be gone now but damn sure not forgotten!!!!

  • I always wondered what would have happened if Steve Gaines wouldn't have died. Remember Steve was an excellent singer. I think the band would have carried on under Steve. Shame both Steve and Ronnie had to go.

  • They would never be the same again after that crash but this is sooo amazing and I love them so freeakiinng much. They really are the best rock band who ever played and will play I LOVE YOU <3

  • Whoever disliked this should be tarred and feathered...

  • It's said that the guys were not sure if the crowd would like this or not; but felt it was fitting tribute to Ronnie, Steve, Cassie and their road manager Dean.

they also did not want to go by Lynyrd Skynyrd because of the loss of their friends so they started the Rossington-Collins Band but Always played Free Bird as an instrumental! I can not believe that they now have Johnnie singing it. It's just my opinion but they should have left it without the vocals and let the crowd sing instead.

  • I just posted a rare video of Lynyrd Skynyrd doing The Breeze from this same show on YouTube.

  • 33 Years ago today and remembered jst like it was yesterday !!!

  • Talk about chills! Every time I see and hear this, I can still hear Ronnie's vocals. I can't believe it'll be 33 years on 10/20. I can recall exactly where I was when I heard about the plane crash. I still get a horrible feeling in my guts when I think about it. We miss you Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Leon, Allen, Billy, and Jo-Jo.

  • This video and mikez(with a Z)=:)

    Good shit....

  • the start of rossington collins band right here

  • @ritcheyrocker yep

  • Anybody know why Gary used the Les Paul on this one?

  • @ritcheyrocker But where's Leon?

  • I've had the original tape (that this video came from) since about 1970. I once asked the late Jo Jo Billingsley if she was at this reunion, and she told me that she wasn't invited.

  • @tennesseeconcerts I'm sure you mean 79 and not 70.......There was no Volunteer jam yet in 70, CDB wasn't around yet, neither was LS. I saw Charlie first about 73 or 74 at Fair Park for the WKDF School's Out Party. Long Haired County Boy had just come out and was being played on radio, but few really knew who he was.

  • @rockinredneck57 You are correct. I meant to say 1980. Thanks

  • Gary is precious , still. Always , of course, Leon and Allen, too.

  • Comment removed

  • @bearing44 ???? what sucked

  • gary was wonderful!!!!

  • Great, but ronnie ... :(

  • This is the First Time I Have Ever Seen Gary Playing Freebird On a Les Paul,Not His Ole SG Gibson.

  • Tony, thanks for posting! You can feel the huge amount of emotion, I can't imagine what they all felt just getting back onstage and playing this tune for all those fans.

  • My favorite post plane crash freebird performance... i can watch this all day. thanks for posting

  • I drove 14 hrs from NY to be there ---it was to this day the most amazing musical event i have ever seen---and I went to HUNDREDS of CDB, MTB and Outlaws shows

  • @freefred23 I drove 12 from NY too with like other guys and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. What a moment !!! I'l never forget it. Great show with Papa John Creech, Wet Willy and Others that escape my memory now. how about filling me in and help me remember.

  • LOVE IT!! greatest band of all time!

  • GREAT !!!

  • THE great!!!!!!

  • Wouldn't a soft straw mute the strings ?

  • yep I do believe that is what he used there...

  • @twostrokeornill1 It wasn't a straw that Gary had between his ring and pinky finger ; it was a lit cigarette. He was picking with his fingers and not using a pick.

  • @TheChristoph68 Yep, kind of a trademark thing with Gary.

  • I'm also surprised Gary Subjected his Les Paul to the "rigors" of Free Bird. Look carfully at the rod he jammed under the first fret, to raise the action of the strings-which he claims makes the slidework easier and sound better.

  • it is said to be a plastic straw*

  • thats what i use when i play slide

  • Thanks Tony !!

  • Was this the only time Gary Rossington used his Les Paul on Freebird. I know most of the time he used his SG.

  • he also use the les paul for free bird why the new line up. search the video in youtube, i think is lynyrd skynyrd freebird with southen stars or something like that.. :)

  • ive only seen him use his les paul for it 3 times...once because of he was in a medely

  • RIP Allen, Ronnie, Billy, Leon...

    The world will miss you

  • dont forget steve and dean and cassie

  • yeah

  • dont forget Cassie, Steve, Dean, Hughie, and Ean

  • my 12th BD present

  • sounds good to me....wow!!!!

  • you can feel the loss right here..touching tri

    bute

  • Was there to see it live, I feel the last and only time for the Original band to play after the crash...

  • Allen Collins founded Roll4Rock Wheelchair Events and Benefit Concerts before he passed away. His dream was to use music to raise awareness about physical challenges. Please visit online for more information or to volunteer

  • why must we rockguitarists always be drunk. it destroyed my life, slashes life, skynyrds life, ronnie woods lifife but its so hard to stop , only james hetfield is clean for some (years) frusciante tries are we rockguitarisst forbestimmt to destroy ourselves. my father is 87 and one of the best jazzpianists of the world. perhaps i change to piano.

  • The best band in the world...

    love it

  • FLY HIGH FREE BIRD!!!!!!

    So sad..

  • rip allen,billy,leon,ronnie

  • steve

  • I remember exactly where I was when I heard about the plane crash back in '77. I was in my first year at a small business college. I also remember the very first time I heard the guys play "Freebird" without Ronnie's vocals. I can only describe it as eerie. I can hear him singing even though he's not there.

  • Hey Tony , cool video thank you for posting that . Would you know where i could get a copy of that complete show on VHS or DVD ? Please let me know .

  • I do believe it has been released on dvd not sure where to pick it up at....this is from a tape a friend recorded while it was airing live that night....

  • Thanks alot Tony for the info.I will look for that on dvd.

  • Absolutely the greatest band in the history of rock n roll. Allens stage presence is a act of its own. God, I miss these guys.

  • ill never think of this song the same way when i hear it.....BTW... why was the ending cut off?

  • well youtube allows 10 minute videos and I had to make a 2 parter for this because of the long jam....check it out it is good to see the ending....

  • thanks man great vid

  • You just made a 40 year plus Skynyrd fan very happy. THANKS for sharing and posting.

  • it's weird not seeing gary play an sg on this song i think he is one of the best slide players

  • this is for sure the coolest vid ever!!!!thanx for sharing!!!

    rip billy

  • Timeless

  • Wow, This has to be the coolest video in the world!

  • Thanks Pat for sharing your dvd with me.....

You should know!!! I think you are the only one who recorded it off the tv.......lol.....

  • I think so. Not many people had VCR's back then. I saw an article about you in the Music City Examiner. I saw one about me too, haha. How cool!

  • @TonyBeazley No problem Tony. I've only shared it with very few people, although many have requested to buy it from me. It's not for sale. I'm just happy that so many people have enjoyed watching this historic video. Thanks for giving me credit.

  • There should not be anymore Lynyrd Skynyrd without Billy Powell.

  • billy we are all going to miss up but by the grace of jesus we know you will be playing your song in heaven along with ronnie.rip brother

  • r.i.p. billy

  • is allen playing

  • he his, but he is using a different guitar to the one he normally uses.

  • what is Allen using.....looks like a model similar to a melody maker....kinda....

  • he is using a Gibson Les Paul Junior

  • cool...thanks very much!!!!

  • I am glad that Gary pretty much forced Johnny to finally sing the song, but this instrumental is a very moving tribute to Ronnie and Steve and Cassie. Charlie and Ronnie were good friends, I'm glad he brought back the guys for Vol Jam. Where is Leon though? I see Charlie Hayward, the bass player for CDB, but not Leon?

  • yeah me too!!! Leon is off to the side of the stage cause had had another surgery on his arm and its in a sling....at the very last of the part 2 they all come on stage ...watch that one....

  • I'm sure your mother sucks pretty good........

  • Let me guess, you love Kid Rock's "Balls in your mouth" - literally and figuratively.

I'll chalk this one off to your youth and ignorance - but remember this - don't start nuthin', and there won't be nuthin'.

  • thats just some meth head chic from Canada who doesn't have a clue what she is......urariotalice is the name for her channel.....people just wanna start shit sometimes I think.......

  • suck my southern cock urariotalice YOU DISRESPECTFUL LITTLE PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lynard Skynard will ALWAYS be my favorite rock band. Some things will NOT change and that is one of them!

  • WOW!! AMAZING !!!

  • we were there and it was so very moving, chill bumps even though so buzzed up

  • Respect to all you Southern Country Musician dudes - STAY FREE

  • This must have been a very emotional show for them. I think it was the first time Lynyrd Skynyrd as a band played together since the plane crash. It takes a lot to get back up there. They are the best and always will be!!!

  • I saw Lynyrd Skynrd in August at the Allen County Fair. I was standing front row, amazed by the performence. Well I was listen and watching, Gary looked me right in the eyes. My heart stopped. I had been watching video's, reading books, anything Lynyrd Skynyrd and I could never get over his talent. He is my hero and the 3 seconds he looked me in the eye were the 3 best seconds i've ever experienced.

  • thats awsome

  • That's deep.

  • wow that is sad

i think thats the first time iv seen gary play slide w/ his les paul

  • WOW! Thanks so much for posting this! What an incredible piece of history.

  • I've always noticed that Billy Powell looks nearly euphoric while playing the piano.

  • yes seems to be the only time he is really happy besides bass fishing.....

  • I was there. Never witnessed a more amazing moment at a concert. What this tape doesn't show is that they got probably a 5 minute (at least) deafening ovation when they walked on before they even played a note. The place went berserk. There was not a dry eye in the house. It was a magic night.

  • dude that is so cool....good to know that !!

  • Is Charlie Daniels playing the guitar "vocals" on this or is it Allen Collins?

  • i love this song wish ronnie allin and steave didnt die

  • i wish you would learn how to spell

  • wow. I wish i could have been there but I am to young.

This really makes you miss Ronnie. I don't think anyone can help but cry when you watch this.

  • I was there, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. it still gets to me...

  • Dude thats normal and I am glad to see some people aren't afraid to say it.

  • Dude, that Ms.Dude to you..LOL

  • LOL good to have ya here........thought I saw you on Skynyrd frynds list couple of years ago

  • Howdy Tony, i'm still there, mostly a lurker, i'm at myspace/litlwingmusic but you don't accept friend request from bands.. whaaa

  • I'll add ya!!!!! ;)

  • Excuse me seriously. But in all seriousness men or women can cry to this song.

  • Makes you think of good friends and family, long gone. This song triggers floods of memories. Tears can't be avoided.

  • this is more than only music. someone makes Gary play like he's between heaven and earth. this vid takes my breath away...

  • gary kicks ass. coolest guy ever

  • so amazing. this song is amazing. it can make me cry. but this song fucking rocks. when i was 16 and my grandmother died of cancer. one of her most favrite songs was free bird. so we played free bird at her funeral. this really is a truelly moving song.

  • same here brother Free Bird is a fitting song at funerals too....done a few audio tapes for old friends and family...

yeah this is one of the better Free Birds after the crash....

  • This will be my funeral song. Hopefully not for many more years but my family know my wish. My wife and 3 children and I are all musicians and respect what this music means to us and millions of other people.

  • SO MOVING. This video can make a grown man cry. At least the people who died especially Ronnie can fly on a Freebird now in Heaven. "To me, there's nothing freer than a bird, you know, just flying wherever he wants to go. And, I don't know, that's what this country is all about, being free. I think everyone wants to be a free bird." -Ronnie Van Zant

  • I lived in Lawrenceburg, TN back in the 70's. Went to Vol Jam 78 79 and 80. Saw lots of great bands. Skynyrd was by far my fave. I still remember when it came time for Ronnie to sing, Allen Collins threw his arms up and looked skyward. Ironically, Free Bird wasn't well received in the early yrs. I heard Ronnie say in an interview that song actually got booed in the beginnings. Then it became the rock anthem of a generation. Then performing the song w/o Ronnie. Thx for the memories.

  • Would like very much to thank you for posting this. Yes, I was there at the Municipal Auditorim that night. I remember they shined a spotlight on Ronnie's spot when his vocals came up. There was not a dry eye in the place, on stage and in the audience. Very emotional that night.

  • I was there,,my birthady is 2-1 and if I remember this was on the 3rd anyway the weekend after my bday,,snuck in several pints of JD..

  • I can not begin to comprehend how tough this first time back without Ronnie, Steve and Cassie on stage had to be on the band. God bless them all.

  • makes you wonder what Ronnie would be writing today, and since then

  • it`s amazing how Ronnie modelled these guys in such a perfect harmony...as if he`d known that some day they will be playing without him...

  • wow, what an honor it must've been to be there. I bet there wasn't a dry eye in the room. It made me cry everytime I watched it. i sent this vid to a 13 year old boy who plays skynyrd songs on you tube bobbycook13. I told him this is the true emotions skynyrd's music has. yall need to check him out. he's keepin skynyrd alive by bringing it to the youth. will always love skynyrd till I die

  • yep I just met Bobby last week yeah he sure is a cool dude and especially for loving Skynyrd music.....wish I couldve done that at his age

  • The best SOUTHERN ROCK anthem of all time, it brings me back to a simpler time in my life. great memories! long smokey nights, lots of booz, and wild southern women.

  • I was watching this when it aired. It still runs chill bumps on me today like it did back then. I have one on CDB Jam around 1987 or 88. with some of Johnnys First Gigs . Keep your eye out I maybe posting it soon.

  • ok cool just watch out for umg...they pegged me yesterday with my Allen tribute

  • Where did you get this video i would love to buy it! Could you maybe send me a link or something? I looked for the DVD you were talking about but the DVD they have out is only a Volunteer Jam from 1975 I believe. Even if you have this on VHS could you send me a link?

  • I got it from a frynd..who had a vcr and beta way back when..lol I have no links this is all of it....

  • I was there also. What a moving moment when it came time for Ronnie to start the vocals. I still get chill bumps thinking about it. Thanks so much for sharing this video. I still have my ticket stub!

  • Fantastic concert!! I was there. Just told my age. Please could anyone give me any info on how to get this concert.

  • THANKS TONY,THIS IS AWESOME!!

  • thats a doobie gary was smoking. he said it made the song more intence!

  • if you say so!!!!!!

  • Do you have the Call Me The Breeze footage from this show? I heard they played that too and Taz Degregorio did the vocals.

  • I think it is on there..

  • Where did you get this footage? Is it off a dvd or something? I read that they did Call Me The Breeze at this show to. Do you have the other footage?

  • They just released a volunteer jam dvd last month...this tape was found in the 90's!!!!

  • fair to say that garry rosington does not use a thumb pick

  • oh and great job man. its so sad seeing Gary and Allen looking young. and not seeing Ronnie beside them.. Bitter sweet

  • for the record. This is January of '79

My mom was lucky enough to be at this concert

  • hell yeah makes me cry i love this band

  • that was a beautiful tribute to their fallen comrades..I was very impressed by Gary's subtle approach and tactfulness in his guitar playing..that was pure soul in his sound..that can't be taught..

  • Great job Tony.

For years I've been hoping to find a video of Charlie's Volunteer Jams. There was actually a theatrical release of one of the Jams. Do you know anything about it?

    Thanks

  • Actually they are releasing the jams on dvd this year. Not sure what years they will be but I'm sure it would be worth getting.

  • Walmart chains carry one of the jams with the MTB, Dickey Betts and a bunch of other people.

  • Thanks ! Leon and all the gang walk out on stage if you watch the very last end after Artie's speech on Part 2. Leon still has his arm in a sling.

  • thanks tony!! gives me chills .listened to this on the radio back in the day. God bless charlie daniels for getting the band on stage that night. notice no leon he was still messed up from the crash.LONG LIVE RONNIE VAN ZANT!!

  • was this after the plane crash..Theres no johnny vant zant singing..its not the same :(.
