A quiet and assuning young lad who just did his act then went offstage and slipped into the shaodws. He's never had a fender bender apparenty and I'm not talking about Hank B Marvin.
So, everybody my age who went to Led Zep heaven eat your hearts out, 'cause I am enjoying Cliff, Beatles and everyone else including Sinatra and daughter! Haha! I love lyrics I can understand and relate to,
These were the days when white recording producers took the songs sung by black singers and give them to white singers because most of America preferred to hear those songs sung by whites and bought the records. Then there were those blacks whose songs were used by recording companies for years and never paid them a dime in royalties and they died penniless. What goes around comes around and there is always is the big payback for every nasty, racist, evil deed.
Learning alot at 43 years old,...I thought Cliff was great doing Devil Woman and i'm finding out his roots,...I really like The Shadows being a Ventures fan, music is always great but it was better long ago,...I hope to form a band and play all this wonderful music. Thanks for the video!!
I over-estimated the creative understanding of the masses when the Beatles sold all those hundreds of millions of records. It's like people have come-out and confessed that they were just buying what everyone else was buying, but really didn't get it...
I was but a teenager when I bought this 45rpm vinyl record and it is still in my record collection. I'm 62 now and still listen to this song on my MP3. Great song and still love it.
This IS a great song. If you listen to Ruth Brown singing the original instead of this lightweight 2nd rate cover ,you will see how it sounds by someone tho really knows what its all about.
God spare us from the dangerously pretentious music afficianado. So this Ruth Brown knows what "lucky lips" are all about? (as if it was otherwise some deep heavy song) It's a freaking pop song. Get out of your parents' basements, go have your first dates, and live a little. You're way overthinking this.
Pretentious? Moi ? I viewed Cliff Richard's 1963 version and came to the conclusion it was(and is) vastly inferior to Ruth Brown's 1957 recording. If that makes me an "aficionado" then I guess you are right. I hoped that anyone readin the comment would check out the original track Cliff was copying. My guess is that you did not .
Do you go online and look up all the remakes of really old songs you like, then pop over to YouTube and find videos of the remakes, then commment about how "2nd rate" the covers are? I DID listen to her version and prefer Cliff Richard's. But that doesn't make hers "2nd rate". But neither is exactly deep stuff. Just little ditties someone wrote to be clever. Why try to make more out of it? And I think you should look up "afficiando". It's not an insult. "pretentious" is, however. : )
First time I left a comment on UTUBE - starting to wish I had not done so now ! Leiber-Stoller wrote the "little ditty" - for commercial purposes. They also would have liked the Cliff Richard version - it was a top ten hit in UK and Europe and earned them substantial royalties. I dont need to look up words - I know what "aficionado" means, and how to spell it correctly . I have never used it myself though. I think people who use words like that are - pretentious. Enough of this please !
I'm curious what you expected to accomplish by coming to a video of Cliff Richard and calling it "2nd rate"? Why not simply say "I prefer the original version by Ruth Brown"? I came off like someone trying to display how superior they are in musical tastes. "ah, those original negro versions are so superior to those white imitators! We aficionados know what you rabble don't!" Sorry, I have to run over to Elvis Costello's Peace, Love & Understanding now and slam it vs Nick Lowe's version.
Richard Hawley is a fantastic British singer songwriter who, to me looks a lot like Hank Marvin, so i'm making some harmless puns. Check out Richard Hawleys music if yo can. He's brilliant. Mikey xx
I wonder who Cliff's fans are beside myself as I felt such a connection with his style, voice and emotion. Is there a club to meet all the other Cliff's fans and see what we all have in common? Great job IMJ22 for this posting...
I sometimes wonder the same thing, I am a 63 year old Teenager from Toronto, Canada. I have been a fan of Cliff's since I heard "The Young Ones" and "Dancing Shoes" in the 60's, I am going to guess that you are a lot younger than me, If so I am glad that some younger people are hearing good Rock n' Roll.Cliff should have been a much bigger hit in Canada and The U.S.A., he just never got promoted enough.
I'm 59, grew up in a tiny hamlet in Canada. Liked him okay at the time, and the Shadows too. But not nearly as much as I had liked Elvis, Everlys, Carl Perkins, Hank Williams, etc. from the 50s. Still listen to them all.
When the Beatles hit, Richards might as well have gone to Mars.
To each his/her own, but "good Rock n'Roll...this?! Please. Perspective: Mayall's Beano (Clapton)Album, Dylan's Highway 61, Rubber Soul came out the same year as this performance. He's so lame by comparison.
I also grew up in a tiny Hamlet in Canada, and I am a big Elvis, Everley Bros.,Ricky Nelson, etc.fan, but I must confess I have never liked The Beatles, not even one of their songs. To me their music was bubblegum compared to Cliff's.
