Wow! That was a clever way the man stated what he wanted to do to Mother Willie Mae, "I'ma pat yo' hips"! That scared her badly because she hated sin. Yet, I was really touched by the powerful advice Mother gave to the seemingly humble daughter. Here, I truly felt the remarkable love between them, and it felt so wonderful!
This is part of the 1980 classic Gospel music documentary "Say Amen Somebody". There are so many great performances that were thanfully captured in that movie that's it's really difficult to chose which one I love the most. But this is certainly one of the ones I love the most :o)
You may have to order the Video/DVD...but anyone who is interested in or touched by the Genre of Gospel Music needs to purchase 'Say Amen Somebody' . It will touch you deeply, because the founders of Gospel Music tell their stories...they are all deceased now, so this Video/DVD is more valuable because this is probably the last time these 3 giants were seen together prior to their death.
Zella Jackson Price was just a little part of the movie, but she was the brightest star among all those greats. I've listened to her recording of this song since I saw the movie when it first came out and I'm brought to tears every time. I've also been very disappointed that there doesn't seem to be more recordings of her. The video sound isn't as good as the recording you can get from iTunes or other sources.
Zella is opening a brand new page of music interest in my life... I didnt know i could ever become a fan of gospel music... move over over Metallica lol...
Wow, I am absolutely and belatedly in awe of Zella. She is a powerhouse! I am reminded of all those strong, gifted vocalists I grew up with in Southern Baptist churches. Lord knows, she brings it and anyone can tell that she means it when she proclaims "I'm Happy!" Hard to believe this is over 20 y/o footage, but what a great moment in time to be captured for posterity. I thank Angels in America's Flotilla Debarge for turning me on to Zella's magic. You are indeed his child. Sang, Zella, sang.
No, Malcolm Speed of St. Louis Missouri wrote this song. Not sure who arranged it, but I would imagine that Mr. Speed arranged it, as well. King Cleveland did not write this song.
Interesting... I got my information from the credits of Angels in America which used this song. Cleveland and Martin are credited. I'll have to check to see what the Say Amen Somebody credits say.
this really is great in studying this for history fair!

One of my favorite segments of the movie
It was interesting how Mother Smith mentioned that man was trying to touch her but she kept singing/ministering to him until he was in tears - wow -
and I'm His Child is one of my most favorite songs ever

she hosts a radio show

Mother Smith made a good point. When we're ministering, it's not about us, our families, or anything else. It's about touching the lost souls.

I want to sing this at church but I can't sing that high
BerniceJenkins2007 3 years ago
Maybe you can sing it in a lower key. You don't have to do it exactly the way she does it. Just let God use you.
EvangelistAllen 3 years ago
i understand y u suggest a lower key, but that is how she usually sings
