  • love that song

  • Its about time that all the people who talk about the negatives about Rufus to get a life a just enjoy the superb vocalist and song writer that is Rufus Wainwright, just enjoy the music is amazing.

  • The drugs have had no effect on his voice.ant fan knows the slur has always been there. The man is a total genius, cant wait for wednesday night to see him again, sublime, one of the best song writers in the past 20 yrs.And so says Elton John.

  • "Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved. Tell me, and not for thinking everything that, you've done is good. I really need to know."

  • Actually, taking too many drugs and having slurred speech has helped many artists, and this song, by all outward appearances, doesn't address AIDS at all, although hatred towards gays is mentioned as an aside.

  • Esta cancion me recuerda a un novio que tube donde quieras que estes

  • i am very upset with how hes obviously taken too many drugs and it has permanently slurred his speech. he has such a great voice and such talent it's just depressing. i like this song. x

  • Wonder what drugs he has taken/using.

  • He has always kind of slurred some words...It's his style, and as far as I know he's clean, having kicked Meth years ago...

  • check your facts cupidiot

  • URG NOBODY CARES IF HES GAY OR NOT his musics freakin amazing and thats what matters. srsly ppl...grow up. Rufus, great vid. love the music to pieces, and i love the video.

  • I'm SO SAD I have to miss Rufus Wainwright @ Benaroya Hall 2morrow night! Damn Work! :(

  • He was born in Quebec Canada, so when he says i'm going home, I don't think in in europe

  • I love that man..... his voice is gifted.....

  • I'm tired of the earth... I want to move to Venus.

  • I hear the weather is great this time of year ;-)

  • Wanna trade?

  • Im tired of France ..... I want to move to America :)

  • Im tired of America....I want to move to France

  • i want to move to japan

  • This is a great song!

youtube comment conversations are pretty funny. most of them have nothing to do with the music video hah

  • @teepgirl91: the thing is, i don't like fighting at all. But i felt like i had to stand up for myself, and for the gay community. it's nothing against u, so please don't take it personal. I hope that next time u meet a gay guy u give yourself a chance to know him better, and hopefully, change your mind about sth that is just out of our hands. Thank u :).

  • You should know that you're making a choice believing in God. Why rights do you have to condemn people who are making a "choice" in their sexual orientation (with all sarcasm)? You're accountable and they're also accountable, but in front of "God", not YOU. The bible also supports slavery and ownership of women, I suggest you stick to these "commandments" as well.

  • u see, u and i r so different and nothing can change our minds and i accept that.

last time i wasnt finished w/ my comments, cus somhow youtube didnt permit me to

i was left as a hater for gays, but im not i meant to conclude that i will not let myself separate from gays cus that would be discrimination.i dont hate gays but i dont agree w/ them and just as u felt u had to stand up for the gay community i myself felt that way with the christian community.

  • "I don't hate gays but I don't agree with them". Can I say I don't hate blacks but I don't want to see them on the bus with me? I don't discriminate against women but they should not be allowed the right to vote? Where's this logic going?

The world is about choosing? When did you choose to be attracted to, put it plainly, dicks? Do you show them porn to test their sexuality? I really want to know when so I can raise my kids to be straight!

  • @teepgirl91: if all of us are sons of god, and i was born this way, then i don't see why i can be consider a sinner. Pretending to be sth u're not would be much worse, cause that's called lying.

As u can see i'm an atheist, but i have many gay friends who are catholic, and have much more faith in god than many of my straight friends.

  • @teepgirl91: first of all, being gay is not sth u choose. I'm gay, and that's why i can tell u that it definitely wasn't a decision. if it was, do u think people would choose to be that way, and deal with discrimination and homophobia every single day?

So, what are we supposed to do? Marry a woman and pretend to love her, hurting her and yourself? Commit suicide? U tell me

  • @teepgirl91: i guess we're even then cause i truly feel sorry for u as well, for not being able to recognize true love.

Being gay doesn't mean u're gonna sleep with any man u see. That's just a stupid stereotype. I believe in true love and i'm still waiting for the right one.

And according to your religion loving is not a sin; judging is.

And srsly guys, if u're so against gay people just stay away from gay artists instead of just going around spreading hatred.

    Peace out

  • mr.nachonizer,

i do recognize true love, when true love is between a family, a friend n respected loved one. if u my friend didnt comprehend wat i meant when i commented on u, then i will repeated it i only said u didnt know wat the bible was really about therefore theres no reason 4 u 2 judge aswell n bfore u stereotype me on wat you think my religion is i must correct u ofcourse loving is not a sin but when that love is rightful n pure.but i do respect ur opinions oh n thanks 4 taking notice.

  • so then what is being gay? a man who has an INTIMATE relationship with the same sex, if that werent true then that man would be asexual so please know the difference. and may i add, why amongst gay men is there a higher aids rate, because most, NOT ALL, sleep with anyone they see/ or think they ''love''

  • @teepgirl

you should really know what asexual means before you use the word because it doesn't mean what you obviously think it does.

It means lacking sexual organs and sexual drive , it is a way of organisms to reproduce who are incapable of intercourse because they lack the organs. They use spores or fission to reproduce.

  • Comment removed

  • what i meant to say on my comment was exactly what u said a person who lacks SEXUAL DRIVE. i probably didnt make sense but thats what i meant that if a person likes to have an intimate relationship with the same sex they r gay but if a person lacks with both female and male, who r incapable, then they are asexual. and i am no scientist to get the whole term but i pretty much get the idea what asexual is.

  • Judging others because of your belief in a two thousand year old mythology that took most of it's stories from other older religions is hardly productive either. Live and let live, the world would be pretty boring if everyone lived and acted and felt the same way. You can't judge people who feel the way they do, after all if your god is right and god created gay people then to say their lifestyle is wrong is saying that god made a mistake which would mean he/she couldn't be god at all.

  • Because we all know the majority of the people in the poor African countries are all gay men. And all the junkies sharing needles must be gay too. AIDS is everyone's disease. It does not just infect gay men. Besides, there are worse diseases than AIDS. MRSA, for example, which is similar to AIDS, but without the HIV preceding it and with no proper medicine to halter the disease.

  • if you disagree honestly i dont care! i have my right dont i? Really read the bible most of you need it. but once again everyone can do what they want if they please.and nachonizer, i truly feel sorry for you. you DO NOT have any idea what your talking about and dont know what the bible says or is really about. the bible is not based on only condemning homosexuality it has other values and principles.

ps. i like this song haha. the rhythm.

  • first of all rufus does not agree on gay marriage (or any marriage). secondly every one has the right to say/do what they want to in agreement or not. but take notice that you will be hold accountable of your actions and sins. because sin does excist people! i can truly love my brother my friend, or my mother but i will never have sex with them its obviously wrong RIGHT?! and for homosexuals, love is not sex. its an expression between a man and a woman within marriage.

  • Plus he's Canadian, he can hate America without guilt.

  • First off - the melody and arrangement are truly beautiful to anyone with ears -

Secondly - the lyrics are provocative. They simply say, "I'm finally sick and tired of the idea that ignorance is noble, hatred is patriotic, and I've kinda given up on the plastic chimerra that the, so called, 'American Dream' represents".

I say this, not because I give a rat's ass about Gay Rights, but because I believe in the original United States Consitution.

    As presently written.

  • as always great voice rufus.

but the music video is over-dramatic and takes away from the song

  • I LUV IT

    So beautiful song!

  • In answer to those wondering what this song is about, it's about living a country where gay marriage (and being different in general) is voted down by so-called Christians, and at the time of its writing, Bush had made the rest of the world hate us with his cowboy bullshit. That's just for starters, but that's the gist of it, in my mind.

  • sell crazy somewhere else

  • All I understand from your statement is that you're a hateful zealot with no mind of your own, and an inexplicable need to condemn anyone who isn't like you.

  • lol.

i've got better things to read rather than a bunch of sexist fairytales in this bullshit called bible.

    W/E

Loved the song and the video <3

  • wow... your a frigin dipshit...

so answer me this, if god created the animals and he disaproves of homosexuality then why did he make so many gay animals? Humans seem to be the only species that discriminates based on sexual preference.

  • I'm in love with everything about him. He's just so amazing. Words can't sum it up. His voice is just so geniune and just. . .raw, it's just blows my mind.

  • he's a pretty damn good musician. I am just now discovering his music in a major way.

  • Excelente video de Rufus, y una de las mejores canciones ^^ excelente

  • me too

  • could someone one explain the song to me?

  • he's talking about how america has kinda gone down the drain "i'm going to a town that has already been burnt down" and how america as a whole used to be (and can stiil be sometimes) very bigotted at times, about things like homosexuality "do you really think you're going to hell for havin loved?"

  • Heard this on CBC radio today.

A fantastic song and a truth for me! =]

Just trying to go home. This is now my new anthem! Can relate to this song so well :-D

  • so he is gay??

damn. why are all the good looking ones always gay

  • is he gay? where have you been?

  • First line already captures me. And it's the first time I heard it. The intonation, melody...Reminds me very much of Keane.

  • i love keane n i love rufus so ur awesome gud man

  • Check out Keane's cover of Rufus' 'Dinner at Eight.'

  • Ohhhhhh, his voice. Makes life worth living. And what's with this 'I like him even though he's gay' crapola? Are you kidding me? Why the (expletives deleted) does it change the way you listen? Got straight ears, have you?

  • i actually was not aware of this amazing artist until i seen him on the tv 2 songs , sound from the O.C. california and haliuiha misspelled sorry.

  • His voice reminds Thom York's voice

  • This song kicks so much ass it's smooth yet very dark at the same time.

  • wow; i didn't know this song was from him :o i like this song and i like him ;D

  • I didnt know he was gay. I still like his music.

  • Thats nice.

  • i totally love rufus wainwright! listening to his music for what... 3 years now? thanks for the keane board

  • The world is f*cked up because the people are.

  • yep.

  • I love thi song.

  • He is REALLY-REALLY-REALLY-REALLY-REALLLY cute...his got the mostamazing eyes al over the World... :D

  • AGREED!

  • Well, that's not a problen with me, I'm the same. But it's just kind of strange to me that you would say it like that.

  • I think he's really cute even if he's gay. :)

  • That's like me saying I'm really ugly because I'm straight.

  • no it's not. Even if he likes other men I still like him lol.

  • wow u hit right in my soul with this one the words are do deep ... a new classic :)

  • he is simply magnificent

  • simply art

  • October 16th1775 - Portland, Maine burned by British

:the town has burned down 4 times: - see Rufus Wainwright this October at Merril Auditorium -

  • How could I have missed out on this guy for this long? Hauntingly gorgeous writing ...

  • un air de radiohead, la folie de bowie, un soupçon des beatles, un truc de buckley, un effleurement de the verve

  • He is everything the music can imagine...

    Love u Rufus

  • geweldig idd

  • Now, he's the most defs. the definition of sexy :)

  • lol come to Canada ;)

  • LOL! ^ you rule!

  • He's already a Canadian....

  • I am from Holland and was on holiday in England this summer. Listening to BBC2 radio I heard an interview with Rufus and then this brilliant song. I truly haven't heard anything this beautiful in a long, long time. Funny how coincidence sometimes brings you such good things.

  • Hallo! :)

    Mooooi, he?

Ik moet het liedje dagelijks toch wel 4 keer luisteren!

    Goeie vakantie gehad? LOL

  • Ja, was lekker..... ;-)

Maar idd, wat een waanzinnig nummer is dit zeg.... vooral inderdaad vanaf 2.56 met die tempowisselingen, echt briljant.

  • 2:56 is when I start getting chills.

It's so sad, yet resolved..... It brings me back to when I left my religious faith. He replicates the sensation better than any musical artist I've ever heard. That's why I love 'em. :)

  • i love this song, so sincere and true...

"...Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved?" my favorite verse....

  • I love his lips!

  • But he does sound like tom yorke or tom yorke him it's just a comparison no big deal but its true. both very good.

  • I adore this video. :]

  • I'm gonna make it up for all of the Sunday Times

I'm gonna make it up for all of the nursery rhymes

They never really seem to want to tell the truth

I'm so tired of you, America

    Sublime!

  • Not as good as Elliott, but I like it.

  • do you really think youd go to hell for having love?

  • it's "having loved..."; either way though, sublime.

  • Sounds like Radiohead.

  • no way man.

    note: i love radiohead.

  • ... nothing like radiohead...

and second that i love radiohead

rufus is unique, as is radiohead

  • America has lost its way and looks like It never will get back.

  • Interesting song!

  • Incredible man, amazing talent.

  • Like Darren Hayes of Savage Garden sings, "I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality."

  • portland maine - burned down four times. we still promote slaves- come get cha grill chickens.

  • lol, i dont hate black people, and race, and what people love are two different things... Theres good and bad of everything, id rather my kids not learn that its ok to love the other sex, i neither believe in it, nor want my kids to learn that it is ok. My belief not yours.

  • @Braxton888,

I don't hate black people, I just don't agree that my kids should sit in school next to that kinda crap... that's all... I do not hate them...

    Think about your words.

  • bigotry bigotry bigotry...i feel pain for you...

  • braxton888 God transcends anything physical. It doesn't matter what body you have, it doesn't matter what sex you are...just like God, Love transcends all that is physical. A soul is gender-less. Love is Love....and love will always find a way no matter what gender you are. Everyone deserves love, as long as you let love in.

  • That's a beautiful thing to say. You're right, all human souls are equal, a soul doesn't have a gender or colour. A soul is a soul, and love is love.

This song is very good, meaningful lyrics.

  • Daphuhnuh thanks so much. Honesty is the only way.

  • I draw the line. You are for gay equality entirely or not at all. Civil rights can not be voted for by anyone, they are there by right, not by vote. If you aren't for me then you are against me.

  • god is just a myth...

  • Perhaps you should open your heart to love before your hatred poisons your kids.

  • Comment removed

  • I love it!!

  • Very beautiful.. ::))

  • he looks so beautiful in this video

  • This is such an astonishing song and such a powerful lyric. What a wordsmith, what songcraft!

  • sighhh *_*... he should duet with regina... that'd be pretty interesting

  • This is for all the people who are being ignored in this country, all the people whose rights are being ignored because same-sex marriage is banned.

"I'm so tired of you, America."

"I got a life to lead."

"Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved?"

  • it's also about the world trade centre attacks, but most Americans seem to ignore that part.............also highly influenced by Radiohead me thinks.....especially that last half.....beaut song though.

Check out my rad ambient vibes......at myspace....

  • agreed - definitely channelling Thom Yorke

  • i saw him recently. excellent.!!!!!!

  • love this song.

  • "Tell me do you really thing you go to hell for having loved? "

is he talking about being gay? if so--he just spoke my mind.

  • He is. But he could also be talking about being in an inter-racial relationship, in which case he would be speaking my mind :-).

  • Beatiful music, magnifique!

  • "Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved?

Tell me, and not for thinking everything that you've done is good"

my favourite lyric in this song...beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time.

thank you so much for sharing your wondrous talent Rufus...

  • Wow. This man has so much talent. His arrangements, vocals and writings are amazing. So glad to get a chance to hear & see work of this quality.

  • ok after listening to song for a couple of times... It will be a classic it speaks so strongly and with much truth. What a song and what a man..

  • This song speaks to me in a way that i've never really had before.

    2:56 on I almost cried.

  • Me too. I'm not gay, but I am in a relationship that is not "traditional" in America. So, I can understand where he is coming from. "I've got a life to live" too :-).

  • love this song

  • it's your drug

  • rotflmao

  • WOW this is so good....

  • Seine Musik zu hören ist für mich, wie ein gutes Buch zu Lesen.

  • Great Song! I hope Rufus come someday here to Brazil! I'd love to go on his show

  • Ele foi ao Brasil em 2008, eu o vi na tv (no programa do Jo Soares) cantando esta musica ao vivo.

  • Sério? Não acredito que perdi isso. Nem se quer tinha ouvido falar no show dele. A publicidade do show dele aqui foi péssima. Ano passado todo mundo só falava sobre a vinda da Madonna.

    uashaushaushasujahuus

  • i love you rufus

  • loooove this songgg

  • SO BEAUTIFUL.

  • Same great voice as his father's, just as great with the lyrics as well

  • i am tired of America and its simple minded thinking, and arrogant state. if my dad didnt have his job here i would love to move back to Quebec.

Vive Le Quebec, Vive Le Canada!Vive le monde!

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG!

  • Holy Cow! Im an american with the dream of moving to the UK to have the life I dream of. I think I just found my theme song!

  • Fabulous

  • Firstly, I am from New Zealand. And the fact that an American (ok American-Canadian) has written a song like this only makes me like America more. You talk about your lauded 'freedom'. Well then, let this spectacularly talented guy get on with making valid comments in a beautiful and compelling way.

  • mesmerizing.

  • 1:34 is freaking AMAZING. excellent song.

  • He should come home to Canada.

  • Ya he should! I should move back there.

  • INTENSE!
