You know, after all of that, I think Donnie knew perfectly well at the end what was happening. He knew that he had set things right, and understood that he was facing his own death in doing so. Perhaps he was laughing because, well, he won, in full knowledge if the price if his victory.

This may be pushing it, but it seemed to me like he had found his own brand of enlightenment, and it was auiting him just fine.

a really excellent scene is when gretchen is becking to Donnies mom, and she is becking, and than the boy thinks she is becking to him. thast so funny and underlines th extravagance of this movie, missundertanding gestic and the perspecktives of so many different characters

The Ensurance Trap is successful and Donnie, wanting to save Gretchen and no longer caring for his own life, uses his power to send the artifact from the TU back to the PU.

At this point in time, EVERYTHING IS RESET back to October 2nd. No one has any idea what is to come in the future. Donnie himself has no idea that he is about to die. He just has a vague recollection that he somehow prevented the end of the world. This makes him happy and he falls back asleep only to be crushed to death by

To guide him on his way, Frank-Bunny appears. Frank is the Manipulated Dead. A person who is killed in the TU when it collapses several weeks into the future at which point Frank travels back in time to ensure Donnie does his job.

To force Donnie to complete his job, Frank lays down a very delicate Ensurance Trap. He makes Donnie flood his school so he meets Gretchen. Gets them closer and closer and finally forces such circumstances that cause his still alive counterpart to run her over.

Alright Gents. I'm going to explain the plot once and for all so we can stop with the speculations.

On October 30th, a plane flying in the air encountered a corruption in space-time and sent it's engine, the artifact, crashing 28 days into the past. This phenomenon created a Tangent Universe. The TU is very unstable, only able to sustain life for about 2-3 weeks at which point it will collapse, creating a black hole in the Primary Universe and ending all life.

I've watched this movie like over 20 Times but every time I watch it i got something new that makes me think about. @PorGaymer No no, all the anwser are in the movie. Have you seen the director's cut? it's far more clearer, story wise. It was Donnie's mission, being the living receiver and all, to sent the artifect (engine) from the tangent Universe back to the primaire Universe. If he did not do this, the universe would collapse. This is why he must die.

I'd just like to put down one of my thoughts on what happened in the movie: Remember the scene at the PTA meeting in which Kitty Farmer said that her daughter's class was reading "The Destructors". I think that maybe Joannie -the girl that no oneseemed to like in the scene when Gretchen first appeared in the class and then had to get up for Gretchen- was Kitty's daughter, explaining why no one would like her.

well if you remember the beginning he wakes up laughing on a mountain. the thing is he's been in this time loop for some time over and over again because he has failed to give meaning to the artifact(jet engine). so toward the end he uses his fourth dimensional powers to send it back in time...again. he gives it meaning to the engine because the engine ends up killing him. this stops the time loop and the world coming to an end.

@kissmymoney one, just to make a movie but the movie reason is that most of the movie takes place in a parrallel universe and if donnie doesn't do the things that he did then when the universe ended after the 28 day, the real world would end with it
