Love your show. I just wanted to add that Starcraft was basically warhammer 4k, i even read somewhere that they were going to license war40k to blizzard, but backed out, and blizzard just rename the classes - biggest franchise mistake ever, right?
You're doing a great job Matt! Doom episode with history about the game was excellent, going to subscribe to you and watch every episode that has come out and comes out. Greets from Finland, keep up the good work!
That multiplayer match was hilarious. Proxy gating someone who's still only at the "these bug dudes are pretty cool" stage is all sorts of mean.
Anyway, have you checked out Starcraft 2 since? They really went to great lengths there to explain what you need to do to get started with the game, and the matchmaking is excellent, so the multiplayer part is about as accessible as it can get.
We have a joke in college about StarCraft players where we photoshopped a visual evolutionary chart to make the final product look like a zerg with the words "Koreans" on the side and we all use them as desktops backgrounds. A friend of ours got pissed off pretty bad because his best friends are Koreans and he didn't like the stereotyping. We had other jokes like "You require more lesbian gas".
But I still like Starcraft, but I'm not sure if it'll still work on a modern OS like Windows7.
I must ask for your opinion though Matt when it comes to the "first" real time strategy game. Would you not consider Bullfrogs Powermonger on the Amiga as one of the first? Mega Lo Mania had elements, but i guess Powermonger stick in my head, and even though you were not designing mobile mechanical units..etc.. it was in a more primitive sense (pikes, building armies, swords..etc.) essentially the same thing.
Should should do a comparison review of Starcraft and Dark Reign. The latter, released at almost the same time, had so many more features. You may want to talk about what makes a hit game, given better games can fail and lesser games can go on to be classics.
So this game gave you 3 campaigns and network play for your $60. Starcraft 2 will give you one campaign and no network play for the same amount.
The above, in a nutshell, tells you why I am more of a retro PC gamer than I have ever been, and with 5 million DOSBox downloads, I do not think I am alone - not one little bit!
@blacklily8 So did you like it? I was disappointed in how short the singleplayer was, as well as how imbalanced multiplayer still is (terrans wreck EVERYONE)
Great review, Matt! Man I got my ass kicked too when I tried playing an online game a few weeks ago. I've always thought this game was cool, but never invested enough time in it to get skilled with it. I appreciate your work, keep them coming!
I'll second that (erm, not that I have got hold of any yet). I missed out on most of these games; there's only a couple in this series that I have played (being fairly stuck in the Acorn / BBC B / RISC OS line I missed most of the mainstream), but my appetite has certainly been whetted for a few.
Whilst I'm here, cheers for the mention in the scroll at the end Matt, I always appreciate anything that gives my ego a little bit of a boost!
As you know I'm not big on RTS so I never played this but I have to say if I ever got into it this would be the game I would start with, the pinnacle if you will.
I'm curious though, you say WC3 kicked your ass around the end so are you saying StarCraft is easier? because I don't recall having any issues with WC3.
Also I saw you mention Sins of aSE, which I've been curious about, it looks like a slower paced RTS and I love me some space setting... is it more RPGish?
Well, I was talking about WC3 on a LAN. The computer was able to handily defeat me and two friends! It took a long time before we were able to take on the computer in anything like a fair fight.
Sins of aSE is a great game, though it lacks a single-player campaign or story mode. I still enjoyed it.
I play probably play this once or twice a week online. I'm still not good at this particular RTS but it's one of the few ones I can actually find good people to play with so even though you found a lot of jerks online like you said there are a lot of friendly people too.
The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the intro clip was "Apocalypse Now". The "future" edition. Anyway, great review! I really look forward to your reviews each week, with such negativity in this world, its nice to see a well done, fun, and enjoyable video. Keep up the good work!
It's definitely "inspired by" or perhaps a "clone of' to quote another commentator here. At any rate, I appreciate the homage to one of my favorite movies.

Ah starcraft, yes it was a great game while i hadnt forgetten it, it kinda got pushed to the back of my mind,.When i think back to RTS what mainly pops into my head are age of empires, dune 2 and the warcraft RTS'ers. its nice to be reminded of how good starcraft was....and theres another on the way too :)
Hehe great stuff man, I love to watch your stuff because It's all stuff I know nothing about. It's really interesting to get it from someone as knowledgeable as you.
That said, Starcraft looks interesting but I have never been able to get through the RTS gameplay, I'm more of a pick up an play kind of guy and shooters, fighters, etc are king in my gaming world. I'd liek to get into RPGs or RTS someday...
@BackForwardPunch: I think you should be able to play single player campaign pretty well. You learn all basic stuff pretty quickly and will have lot's of entertaining nights ahead, but being hardcore veteran player like those playing online takes way too much time and skill for me to even dream about going there anymore. I would recommend Starcraft even as single player game only. Another one of my fav RTS games was Dark Reign, try to check that one one up aswell. Cheers.
Yes, I definitely agree. The game does a good job gradually ratcheting up the difficulty. It's not like the AI in WC III that kicks your butt every time. :)
Great coverage as always! I never got into Starcraft to much, even though I really enjoyed both the C&C series and the Warcraft series. I just never looked at it to much really. It also doesn't help that I really suck at RTS games haha.
By the way, when (if at all) are you going to do a video on The Longest Journey? ;)
I love adventure games, especially the older ones. Lately they're rather lazy with them most of the time but there are some nice ones still. I also see Still Life on your shelve there, that one was pretty decent too!
Is your first favorite genre the RPG? I wonder what you think of Dragon Age: Origin. Have you played it yet, or planning to pick it up? I just got it and so far it's great fun!
@HalfBlindGamer: Yeah, Still Life was amazing adventure as well. Still haven't got the change to try sequel which was released not too long ago, but I hear some old adventure fans were very disappointed so I haven't hurried to get a copy. It's one of those i'm still eventually going to try and hopefully enjoy.
I would love to play DA:Origins but it's WAY too powerful beast for my current computer. Made by BioWare and it's "Spiritual successor" to Baldur's Gate series so it should kick butt.
Never actually played Star Craft but after watching your video its made me want to. I love RTS games but this is one ive missed out on. Thanx again for another great video :o)
I am opened minded enough to realize they are great games but I have tried enough of them to know they don't appeal to me in the slightest, in the same way some people might like any horror movies no matter what it is, just not for me, but at least I tried.........
Doh! I meant might NOT like any horror movies (I am sure you figured that out but just so it's clear to others) oh and thanks for the mention...............
I greatly enjoyed Starcraft, at least until I kept getting my butt kicked. I'm very curious if you feel that Populous qualifies as an RTS, as it was also a game I greatly enjoyed.
Thanks for the shoutout :) When I was younger I would think nothing of spending several nights a week playing through the likes of Age of Empires 1&2, Warcraft 2, Command & Conquer etc but for some strange reason this completely miissed me by. The RTS genre as a whole for me seems to be going down the route of far too many flash looking games and too little fun so maybe the sequel to this might be a return to the genres routes.
I'm really hoping that SC II will be a triumph. I wasn't too impressed with the last Red Alert, but Empire: Total War and Sins of a Solar Empire are addictive as hell.
Another cracking review Matt. Never actually played this game myself but it looks interesting. Thanks for the mention also, you've got a fantastic channel and deserve all the new subs :-)
A great game with probably the best single player story in any RTS and excellent balance in multiplayer.
I played many a games with friends on Big Game Hunters.
I dont really know why you refer to online people not being nice to you though? This game is designed for quickly finding an opponent to play a 1on1 against, it doesnt really matter if he is an asshole as you dont have to interact with hem after the game ends.
I love this game. I think I like War Craft 2 the best, just because I used to play that more as a kid. Its a real fun game. I also love your little sayings at the end of each episode mate.
And thanks so much for the mention at the end of the show, thats very kind of you mate cheers. I will give you another shout out soon asI really like your vids and think they are very professional and more people need to know about them! Thanks again ;o)
This game blew my away when it was released. I was late to the party when it comes to playing PC-games, so this was one of the first I played. It felt like I had been missing out on a whole universe!
Im not an excellent player, so I dont really play online. But the game is so enjoyable that I pick it up play through the single player campaign, at least once a year.
I know the feeling. I was also a late-PC adopter, so I missed out on X-Com, Doom, Wing Commander, Myst, etc. Now I'm trying to play "catch up" by going back in time via emulation and seeing what I missed.
LOL, that's what happened the first time I did a multiplayer game. It's a difficult issue, because you can't blame someone for going with a tried and true technique, but it always feel crummy to be on the other end of it.
Excellent review! I was never really into RTS games like this but I believe it was just because I never to the time to delve into the genre. If I see this out, I will definitely pick it up. I also thought it was an interesting fact that Star Craft was the first video game ever taken into space.
Thank you for the mention in this video and the favor is already returned. I learn a lot from your reviews. So thanks again.
Starcraft... my nitemare. Really not my type of game. I did try it about 3 years after it came out, and I didn't like it. The real time that allow the ennemy to screw up my defense while exploring another part was so frustrating that I've never played again Starcraft and games similar. Too many things to manage at the same time and no time to waste... just pissed me off.
It is one of the best strategy games ever, and certainly The Best of the 1990's ^_^ It's just priceless hours of fun through the battlenet, even if you're not so high-skilled
Needless to say the plot is amazing, the music is great, the gameplay made a standard back then, you can create new campaigns...
If you don't have your copy go buy it !!! It's available in the official Blizzard Store for low price :P !
And then my Protoss fleet could crush you via battlenet XD
Amazing video for one of the best games ever. First played it when I was in high school. Played it through college. I still fire it up on occasion years later and play my brother.
Very lovely game and alot of memories. I owned like 5 copies of the game, 2 of them was stolen in school (yes, it was very popular game in my shcool), 1 was scratched to death, 1 was lost and never found and fifth copy I have still standing there and waiting for me to pick it up again, and you sir, you just made me to pick it up again. Have to go kick some Protoss butt right now! Thanks for another fantastic video. Very kind of you to mention my name there, bro. really appreciated. :) Cheers.

@kohan69 I prefer DoW to SC in any case, honestly. DoW II is as close to tabletop as any game has gotten without emulating tabletop prices.
Mark of Chaos is kind of close to tabletop WH fantasy as well.

Nice one. Sorry to go off topic here but I trust you'll be purchasing Bioware's Dragon Age: Origins. I, myself, can't friggin' wait.

In a word, Endless.

Very lovely game and alot of memories. I owned like 5 copies of the game, 2 of them was stolen in school (yes, it was very popular game in my shcool), 1 was scratched to death, 1 was lost and never found and fifth copy I have still standing there and waiting for me to pick it up again, and you sir, you just made me to pick it up again. Have to go kick some Protoss butt right now! Thanks for another fantastic video. Very kind of you to mention my name there, bro. really appreciated. :) Cheers.
