  • She is so délicate so true so wonderfull she mâles me cry everytime when I hear this song.

  • god.... can she gimme chills all over my entire body, i just shutter when she sings this one... want to cry my heart out when i hear it, she always great live.... i'd love to go to one of her shows... any hot rich available women who want to take me... LOL i'm a broken hearted, broke buster, whose breaking down... :(

  • And Cindy Lauper, wow, you know your stuff! You are made of and completely know...true art. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you for giving America a taste of Brel's spirit through a piece of yourself by doing this song.

And just like Jacques Brel, you yourself ARE and always will be an ORIGINAL, TRUE, and REAL LEGENDARY ARTIST.

    Merci Cindy, xxoo's to you.

  • @ nannabanna you absolutely are RIGHT!! C'est totally a remix/tribute/lovelyremake of the song Ne Me Quitte Pas by the one and only and very ORIGINAL, ahead of his time...

    Le Merevieux ....JACQUES BREL!

God rest his soul. His words, intense emotions, stories, and daring raw truth...deep, vulnerable, soul stirring, and often bitterly funny, or totally humorous....but always REAL. His songs, WERE and STILL, continue to be a gift to the world of music. May he rest in peace.

    And Cindy Lauper, w

  • She is so marvelous!!!

  • I don't think that Cyndi has a much better voice than Madonna... I think that she does have a voice, and Madonna doesn't. Don't take me wrong, I love Madonna, but she cannot sing...she's fantastic on stage, I have been to two of her concerts and loved it... but Cyndi is an amazing singer!

  • I liked it and at times found it hauntingly beautiful... but for me Bassey has made it her own

  • Flawless. I hope I make it to Westbury to see her live this fall !! I hope y`all do 2 ;)

  • 35 people don't recognize an angel when they see and hear one.

  • @freshair3451 who are you to say such a beautiful thing?

  • C'est affreux!! Elle ne vaut pas Jacques Brel, Dieu!!

  • Beautiful

  • THATS MY GIRL! THEY TOOK MADONNA AND KICKED CYNDI TO THE CURB. CYNDI IS AND WILL 4EVER BE THE BETTER VOCALIST!

  • Wouahhhhh what a beautifull singer!!!!!

  • Dusty Springfield owns this song.

  • metsrulein2k & Ranokian what you both say it is true, the first time I listen it the time stoped and I was crying inside, this song is sad is dark and her voice expreses it I think that she was living the song

  • Another version of Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte. Good, but I prefer the original of Jacques Brel. French and Belge will agree with me

  • @acoute Is it because of the language? I dont judge it, you are simply hearing things in another way. I understand that. But the Cindy Lauper version is my all time favorite. This is super dramatic. The whole arrangement also makes her voice stand out, with those "dark" drums. And i have to admit that my french is crap, I miss most nuances, so for me this song is easier. Im a great admirer of Brel, if only there were still singer like him alive.

  • Another version of Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte. Good, but I prefer the original of Jacques Brel

  • It's about the words, the emotion. She gets that. This is more poetry than song. Perhaps those who don't like it have never had the experience of losing their true love. Be grateful for that and go listen to Barbra sing it. She SINGS it, but Cyndi and Rod McKuen LIVE it, feel it, breathe it.

  • @metsrulein2k Thanks for the tip! I never heard the Rod Mckuen version before. It's very nice.

  • terrible like a drowned cat .can.t compare it with mr brel. x.

  • what a f u c k i n g disaster! omg.

  • OMG......I had tears on my eyes....that is one of the best english version of the "Ne me quitte pas"......I love Cindy!

  • @gilgabe66 This is the most emotional version on you tube. Its simply stunning. A song like this is a drama, it should be sung just like that. I cant imagine why folks here compare it with a drowned cat. This is the best I heard sofar.

  • Cindy Lauper la ùnica. Bella interpretaciòn.

  • Holly crap, singers use to be able to sing without using that autotune? nooooooo waaaaaaaaaaaay

  • where are you Cindy with your voice of nowhere

  • where are you Cindy withs your voice of nowhere

  • Una de las mejores versiones de un tema tan clásico!! Qué maravillosa voz! Un rango impresionante + arreglos profundos... claramente superior. Qué bueno poder escucharla. Gracias...!

  • Golden Frog is a class act. Magnificent response using well considered grammar. About on par with the singing I am afraid. Oh well, we can't all be well educated.

  • Awful. She can't sing at all. Sounds like an old tabby cat being drwoned in a vat of mud. Absolutely no talent at all. Watch Shirley Bassey singing this and you will see the difference. No Stillnox tonight after this dreadful rubbish. Thank God I did not pay to see her.

  • @toucheturtle300 GO FUCKING DROP DEAD. CYNDI HAS MORE TALENT IN HER FINGERS THAN YOU DO IN YOUR WHOLE FUCKING BODY.

  • Yep tigerfish... you're right. Ne me quitte pas de Jacques Brel, est l'authentique version de cette chanson, il en est le compositeur et il l'a interprété de facon magistral plusieurs fois. Guys, type Jacques Brel on youtube and see. I'm french and that's one of our folks songs. TY all.

  • this song was originally by terry jacks 1973, look it up, cyndi lauper shopped the shit out of it and didn't do it justice... for the cyndi lauper fans, cyndi is cyndi, but i hate this version of the song

  • @tigerfish314

You look it up. This song was written and performed by Jacques Brel and is called Ne Me Quitte Pas, Always check your facts.

  • @tigerfish314 what the hell are you talking about?

  • She had the unfortunate timing of coming out when Madonna was popular... She was overshadowed, even though she arguably had a much better voice and more interesting songs.

  • @allegrafi cyndi came out first and madonna copied her

  • @Diomedes22 how can you copy talent... honestly...

  • @allegrafi I don't think it's arguable. It's obvious to look back that Madonna was one of a few who cribbed off Cyndi's personal style.

  • @allegrafi Madonna is a lot more daring and experimental and pure than cyndie ever would be. Of course its always kind of "in" to stick it up for the underdog. Listen to Madonna's American Life, Erotica, and Ray of Light, to find this out yourself, and then you'll realize that there's absolutely no way this cyndie is as smart and talented in seeing what real brilliance is. Cyndie screwed it up herself. "girls just wanna have fun", is it that deep? Please.

  • @elajiera Holiday was not particularly deep either. But we have to remember Cyndi is a singer. Madonna is a performer - a dancer who happens to sing. That gave Madonna the edge over Cyndi, that and her provocative personae.

Frankly, I think Annie Lennox (when she was in the Eurythmics) was far more experimental and innovative that Madonna and Cyndi combined - musically speaking.

  • @YouWhyHey There was a Jacques Brel documentary on BBC radio, hosted by Marc Almond, and interviewing Mr. Brel's daughter and others. Did you listen to that?

  • @YouWhyHey Marc Almond too

  • Her singing reminds me of Edith Piaf! so powerful! so moving!

  • Mamma jou take the sun a way on the 20 off Jully in my live. But the sun came back again after all this years. I Married to Ron in Greece and we had a great Wedding but we still missed yoy Mamma. Lots of love your Daughter Sylvia and you have two great grand childeren now mamma. Buts that live Mamma . I am not sais now only happy because i have a happy famillie now. But that still doesn,t mean that i dont.t missed you Mamma you were to good in thids live Maama i forgive your choice Sylvia

  • Sorry to say, It's a disgrace to the voice of Julio.

  • I hadn't listened to this song in years. It always seemed overly dramatic and none of the versions really did much for me. I heard Barbra Streisand's version, which I really liked, and became interested in the song and started listening to other versions. When I saw that Cyndi Lauper had done it, I couldn't imagine that it would be that good, remembering the girl from the 80's. Wow, was I wrong. I haven't been able to get this haunting version out of my mind since.

  • I agree with Rambrewster en Kokanee full-heartedly. That voice, so powerful but yet so fragile when need be. Simply stunning. One of my favourite songs, its executed to allmost perfection. But still so different from the other more smooth versions out there. A great singer.

  • enrique

    iglesias

  • ppppfffffffffffffffff!

  • if this chick was a forklift truck

    Coventry would have a climax

  • The melodic and rhythmic tension between Cyndi's voice and the orchestra have given us a precious gem.

  • Astonishing. Thank you.

  • A stunning performance that made me want to cry.

  • Love Cyndi's spin on Brel's masterpiece... it's unreal how many artists have borrowed this beautiful french song... "Ne Me Quitte Pas"

  • A beautiful and personal interpretation of a classic song. Cyndi rarely attracts the attention she deserves.

  • What a pleasant surprise...As a member of the elder class I have only heard negative comments about this lady...This proves that you can't believe everything you hear...The quality of her voice and her interpretation of the lyrics was superb...

  • i love that song from her...simply fantastic...

  • Nice version, but please you listen to the version of Mari Trini "Ne me quitte pas", according to said Jacques Brel, was the best feminine version of this song.

  • I didn't like this performance. it's rather poor when compared to Patricia Kaas.

  • @Reevo44 - your opinion is wrong! ms lauper can captivate with only her voice. ms kaas's version is rather obvious and ordinary and even the arrangement is unable to make it interesting. you are still entitled to your tastes - however undeveloped and unsophisticated they may be

  • @Reevo44 ... cyndi's voice outshines

  • Fantastic!!!

  • wow, i was ok until i saw this vid.. cyndi is just amazing with this song as with any other songs and she just made me cry with this rendition yaiks..

  • A touch of Lotte Lenya in this one of a long since by gone age (she's even got the look too). Full of smouldering yet brilliantly repressed emotion. How versatile is this incredible woman? Shows her mastery in challenging lower vocal range too as well as upper range where she of course excells.Simmeringly sensational.

  • I have been following this lady since she first arrived on the scene all I can say is a true artist will take you on the highs an lows of a song all from the heart , have listen to just abt everyone who has ever sang this song an without a doubt Ms Lauper nailed it totally love this lady!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • omg she is fabulous both interpretively and vocally

  • l ho ascoltata tre volte consecutivamente l ho ascoltata in numerose altre versioni ma senza volere fare tendeziosi confronti e veramente una interpretazione superlativa

  • che emozione che grande artista il giusto minimalismo

  • best rendition so far.

  • great

  • Well, hot damn. FINALLY FINALLY a singer sings the full English version of this song! Nina Simone did it on an album half a century ago & I've not been able to find ANY version with the whole English lyric since. Lauper even does the "shadow" line right! It's the "shadow of your dog" not, as it turns up on the net everywhere as "the shadow of your shadow." Wish I could find the Simone version (with French AND English) but so glad to find this. Yay!!! THANKS.

  • In French it's: Laisse moi devenir L"OMBRE DE TON OMBRE,

    L'ombre de ta main,

    L'ombre de ton chien,

    translating litterally

Let me become the shadow of your shadow.

    The shadow of you hand

The shadow of your dog. It gives me shivers to read this, because I saw him in '58 on stage, when I was just 18. Unforgettable

    :

  • Something was always magic about her.

  • love this version....Cyndi's voice touches me, she is aws!

  • Surprisingly amazing rendition!

  • If Cyndi had sung this without accompaniment it would have probably been gut wrenching ( in a GOOD way ).

The accompaniment sounds like faulty plumbing :-(

  • perfect,,we love cyndi

  • Is she kidding? Nothing Special about this.

  • @americangalbasseyfan

No, except for the fact that it is an artistic rather than a Popular interpretation, and as such will be opaque to minds only accustomed to processing Pop music.

  • That's food for thought...thanks for the comment.

  • Dusty Springfield's, Barbra Streisand's and Dame Shirley Bassey's versions are much better!

  • Love it, though I didn´t know Cindy, but this is the sole version I find interesting besides Scott Wlaker´s. Dark and intense.

  • WOW this is great!

  • Cyndi, always perfect and with so much emotion into her songs!!

    Please return to Brazil!!!!

  • If you go away

On this summer's dayThen you might as well

Take the sun awayAll the birds that flew

In the summer skyWhen our love was newAnd our hearts were highAnd the day was youngAnd the nights were longAnd the moon stood stillFor the night bird's songIf you go away..But if you stayI'll make you a dayLike noday has been

Or will be againWe'll sail on the sunWe'll ride on the rainAnd talk to the treesAnd worship the windBut if you goI'll understandLeave me justenough loveTo fill up my hand

  • By her singing I understand best about this very romantic and sad song that is sung by so many famous singers. She is a great singer !!!

    June Makino

  • It's almost too personal. It's sung (the verses) as if she was in a room alone in an empty apartment lamenting her predicament, rather than pleading to her love or whatever. It's utterly egocentric and defeatist. As such it is an interesting rendition, but not something you could bare listen to alot. It brakes you down. It's closer to a great performance than it is well sung. With that I do not mean singing was anything but great, but rather that it's a drama piece, not a concert performance.

  • you get it angel

  • Comment removed

  • @therealkakkamakkara It does sound as if she was in a room alone in an empty apartment lamenting her predicament but that is not necessarily defeatist, she could simply be gathering her resolve and I don't think describing her as egocentric makes much sense; there are only two people involved after all.

  • @MiddayButterfly, it makes sense within the context of the literal meaning of the word "egocentric" (as opposed to the popular meaning).

    All despair in "egocentric".

This song is clearly ( well to me) an exploration of the sensation of the ultimate loss, even if she may have some intention of continuing the pursuit, and the reality represented by the sensation is still only a possibility.

  • one of the best cover songs ever!!! awesome

  • I miss Cyndi Lauper. I don't hear enough of her. Thanks for posting this. Great rendition.

  • Cyndi Lauper rocks. Cyndi Lauper is an Artist. A real Artist at that.

  • I love the way she sings this song and give it a refreshing version of the song

  • i love her voice in this song

  • One of the best voices out there. Powerful, multi-colored. Cyndi always delivers both technically and artistically. One of the few singers who can fill an auditorium with her voice a capella. Just amazing!

  • @rambrewster how well said!

  • she is underrated. the mass don't see talent when they hear it.

  • yup, i agree!

  • So true.

    Amen to that!

  • @kokanee112 well that can't be entirely true, because she had a mass following.

  • @kokanee112 what a sad statement, and so true...

  • A wonderfull song and a real interpretation. As you would expect from a true Artist.

  • one of the greatest vocalists of our time and very underrated. beautiful job from a great artist. thanks for posting. keep britney and give me cyndi.....

  • As a child of the eighties and seeing cindy having fun. I am speachless. Brel would be impressed!

  • beautiful - don't leave me, is more dramatic, desperate & direct than, if you go away, but cyndi delivers the goods & gets those hairs on the back of the neck rising.

  • Ohh my fucking god!!

    Cyndi is so great.

I Love this music and cyndi made it so... real... so true.. i don't know.. just love it.

    Cyndi is the best!

  • nice try, but does not exceed the original ... I recommend "Ne Me Quitte Pas-Ingrid"

buen intento, pero no supera la original... les recomiendo "Ne Me Quitte Pas-Ingrid"

  • The original one was of Jacques Brel, and it's better than Ingrid's, on my opinion... He sang it this such spirit... I think Cyndi likes to adapt French songs, she already sang "Le monde est stone" of Michel Berger...

  • Слово звезда здесь даже писать неуместно! Она поет так эту песню,как-будто ее только что оставил весь мир! Она фантастически талантлива!

  • Cyndi reminds me of a young version of Marlene Ditrich.

Personally, I like Lainie kazan doing this song, but I love this also. Just different.

  • It's Brel you moron!

  • not so much killing it. just givin it a new flow. im familiar wiht both versions and preffer the original, but her interpretation appeals to a different crowd and i think thats pretty awesome

  • Yeah. Original by Jacques Brel. And it's funny when you can't speak French and listen to the song... I thought he was saying, "Don't go away." Which implied he behaved like a jerk, like most men, and was now making his girlfriend feel guilty. Like most men. You know, the usual.

  • I just listened to the original by Brel with English subtitles. He IS saying "don't" go away, and forget all the rotten things he did. What do you know.

  • Actually it translates: don't leave me... But o well.

  • Well, think I got the essence. Sometimes I listen to him and, I'm sure, I misunderstand the lyrics. But still among my favorite songs. Anyway, some guy is imploring a spouse not to leave, and promises ridiculous things.

  • True, true. It's a very heart breaking song. And I think the despair radiates from Brel's song, even if you wouldn't understand a single word of it.

  • Unfortunately, the literal English translation of "don't leave me" (three notes) doesn't scan for the music's title line (4 notes). In the English translation by Rod Mckuen (Jacues Brel's long-time lover in Paris) it works far better. This is done all the time, though more noticeable when it's the song's title line.

  • Terry Jacks? LOL he can barely sing. Also, it was Jacques Brel's song originally. -2 to your credibility. Cyndi Lauper's version is so true to the original emotion of the song. Sorry...

  • This is one of the most heart broken songs ever written. Her voice is perfect for it.

  • Très beau Mme Lauper EXCELLENT!!!

  • She looks like Edith Piaf in this video...

  • god she is gorgeous

  • She's wonderful... great video... Thanks for sharing....

  • The English lyrics are by Rod McKuen.

The song however is by -

Jacques Brel wrote this song and many fantastic other ones.

McKuen also wrote the lyrics for 'Seasons in the Sun' - another Brel piece.

  • great voice.....

  • Jacques Brel RULES !

please go check the original version by this belgian Genius.

  • You can even be curious and listen to the original piece by Jacques Brel.

  • incredible pizza

  • Incredibly beautiful....

  • This proves that Cindy Lauper´s career is a true victim of bad songs choice to sing. When she decides to sing what she really feels, she sings much better, she puts not only her technique but also her soul in it.

  • Well the real problem is the Pop nature of her original 80's fame, and the difficulty of shaking off an old persona.

  • She is before her time here. I love her.

    Thanks Cyndi.

  • WOw. She makes bleakness facinating.

  • makes my heart stop ....

  • Oh this is good!

I've heard so many versions of this song I initially blaze about this but it's good.

  • also done by edith piaf

  • I'm impressed.

  • seeing her beg arouses strange sensations...

  • emotionally shocking I would add

it s an incredibly good version of this song-total understanding of its demands

  • the best version of this song i've never heard!

what a fantastic singer u r cindy! u touch people's heart with your magic voice

    thank u, i love u

  • Very good version!

You need listen to a brazilian singer called Mayza Matarazzo. Sehe sings this song in french. It's very good. Her version is in one of the first Almodovar's movie, The law of desire.

  • So far from the original one from Jacques Brel, yet very powerful and emotionnal. It's impossible to do as good as Grand Jacques but this version is surely very well done and unique. Bravo!

  • I suggest you listen to the Shirley Bassey version of this song (best english version in my opinion) - very emotional. Different from Brel but almost as good (I said almost :)).

  • I think Dusty version is the best:D

  • when she sings out she is among the best in history!

  • Her artistic representation of the song is perfect for the words and emotions behind it. Very well done.

  • what a voice/singer ... despite her success, she's still sooo underrated, i feel. rock on, cyndi!!!

  • cindy is & was best ever & ever!

  • great voice.....

  • I'm Belgian, and for me the best version of that song was the first one by Jacques Brel, one the most fabulous Belgian singer we've ever had.

  • too slow. this totally disrupts the melody. great voice tho.

  • But the original song is also really slow. Normally this song is nearly spoken.I think she is as good as people who sang the french version

  • it's deliberate...it's like she's no energy, she's almost given up...total desperation...so powerful!

  • I did like it a lot. Noy Cyndi fan and hardly know any of her songs. This I think was really beautiful.

  • Another absolutely exceptional cover she does is a version of Carey by Joni Mitchell

  • Cyndi's musicianships is always the best!

  • 4 me that's the best version of that song

    english or french

of course the original has another taste

but this one speek to my soul mind heart and existance

  • a little bit music-hallish, eh?

  • Of course Dusty's is the best version of this song. It is the quintessential pop ballad. No one beats it, but Cyndi interprets it as an art song. Her take is totally original and her phrasing is sensitive and artful. She makes it an intimate song. It is to her credit that she doesn't try to sing it like most singers do cause no one can compete with the original. This is a valid and beautiful version of the song.
