The old gal still has it but I agree that the original studio version is the best. Of course it helps to have Stills on the guitar and Nash doing background.
Someday Soon on Elektra Records was the first single I bought. Loved this song. Judy Collins sounds as good now as then. I didn't know about this performance until I ran into this here (from YouTube recommendation after Send in the Clowns).
Ian Tyson Song? Gimme a break. Collins made this song famous decades before he did it. It's not that his version is bad -- no, it's quite good, but in my view, the gender change just doesn't work. The idea of a young girl pining for her prince just out of the service, & with a father suspicious of a guy as wild as himself in younger days rings true. Change genders & it rings false. Of course, if the woman was "just out of the service," it would be politically correct & perhaps comical as well.
Someday Soon was just a perfect song for that time. "I would walk down the tougest road I know." Judy sang the best of the best, Joni, Beatles, Carole King, and wrote awesome songs...."My Father", "Houses", "Since You've Asked"......
I was listening to the Suzy Boggus version of this song and thought, "well, it's nice but not as good as Judy Collins." But then I listened to every version of "Someday Soon" by Judy Collins on YouTube, from 1969 to the present, and she screws it up every time. Her original studio version is perfect, but every other performance she gets the words wrong, and the phrasing wrong, or she just phones it it. It's her signature song, so IMO there is no excuse.
It was September..1968..I had finally discharged from the Marines..22 months in Vietnam..I was just beginning to breath freely again..unless you have been there..you really ave no idea..my night torments would come ..later..but..I heard this song on an old A.M. L.A. Radio station..I..had no idea that someone knew me that well...because this was my song..at least it was for the moment...
Ok, ok.. I know You can not compare apples and peaches.. but..back in the sixties.. 3 ladies who sang a little bit the same were .. Joni, Judy and Joan.. I think I prefer Judy.. her voice has obviously more depth than the other 2..
@charlotia you should check out the machinations and the basically incestuous goings-on of this crowd before you deride my viewings xxx They make the best noise ever though
@charloti apart from a slight change in hair colour, Judy has not changed a bit...the voice is still pitch perfect and strong in her way. You might like to check out Sandy Denny or Natalie Merchant. Have a feeling you might like those voices as well
Man I just want to say that this brought tears to my eyes. Stephen loved Judy so very much and watching this it seemed clearly mutual. Thank you so much for posting this.
Great. Thanks for this. 1990, I think? Interesting to compare it with her original 1969 version. Plus the 1986 recording with Ian & Sylvia. There are some notable variations in the melody. I've been looking at many of your Judy Collins videos here on youtube and realising what a proficient, gifted musician she is - yes, remarkable voice, remarkable singer, but remarkable all-round musician too. (That is also detectable in the Antonio Brico film.)
betahifi I hope the re type is more of a cut &paste rather than a hand hack :either way --- very cool . tks fyi judy memoir I will buy ! hey at 65 I can still be in love ! I have the same chance with her now as i did in the 60's ----NONE ---LOL
betahifi : can't believe u are re typing all those comments! u rock !just had my Judy fix for the day. Steven: just did more reading about him /judy man I thought I had my heart broken --not even close that get together must have been rough
Thanks. I am trying to re-do the older videos with better quality clips. But I do want to honor those folks who posted thoughtful comments on the previous videos. So, yes, I'm re-typing the good ones by hand.
Here is a news flash for you. Judy is working on a memoir book that is due out within the next year. Title will be . . . .
"Sweet Judy Blue Eyes." So perhaps she will be sharing more details about her relationships with Stephen and the other members of CS&N.
FROM haworthhoarder: Great song by Ian Tyson - Judy was at the top of her game when this song came out, and those lucky enough to have grown up in the 60's know that these were truly the golden years for folk and rock -- the incredible vibes and creativity going on then in music have never been repeated since.
FROM vjstonevfr: They dated! What a lucky man. Magic happens 20+ years later. Too cool. Thanks Betahifi.
FROM honeysuckly1719: THANK YOU so much for posting this. How interesting that they all get along, mainly because I can only imagine the drama that went on in the 60's between these three.
FROM elarqui55: Watching this video really touched my soul. Thanks a lot, from Buenos Aires. Tinto y L'Albahaca.
FROM vegantamales: Great performance! I love them both. I think they are soulmates.
FROM dangerousbastard: Great stuff! Graham's mullet ain't bad either! LOL.
FROM pbyardh: Man, I used to think Judy Collins overrated, but this vid absolutely changed my mind. Ignorance on my part, that she did that old Ian Tyson song, but whatever connection she has with CSN certifies her as worthy! Thanks for uploading this. It is educational, to say the least!
FROM mthivier: Wonderful video, thanks for posting! Judy is remarkable. She is one of the few women performers from that time frame whose career continued through the decades to the 1990s and 2000s, and who STILL sounds as good now as she did then!
FROM rahlgren: She is unbelievably beautiful, with an unbelievable beautiful voice.
Yes, I've gotten better equipment and software, so I am re-doing some of the video clips that I first posted a year ago. This new version has better visuals, and better sound quality.
I am going to try to carry over some of the comments that were posted on the older, now deleted clip, but that will take some time for me to type them in. The really good ones, though, I will copy over.
Where are you watching from, by the way? USA? Elsewhere?

Cute to see the glances of admiration jumping back and forth. Never saw Stephen smile like that so much and Judy was positively giddy. Sweet.

It's something to see the source of Stills' inspiration for Suite Judy Blue Eyes on the stage with him, and Nash humming along in the background.
