After Effects Tutorial: Star Wars/Light Saber HD

Is there a way to make one end of the saber not rounded. The beginning of the lightsaber appears flat in most circumstances. Just wondered if there was a way to make it flat without masking?

not sure what i'm doing wrong. when i create the obscure layer it makes the lightsaber effects disappear. then when the mask part ends the saber effects come back...so instead of just seeing half of the light saber, the whole effect is gone. Please help!!

I used Andrew Kramer's lightsaber method when I started using After Effects until 5 months ago. Now I use Ryan Wieber's lightsaber method. It doesn't mean that I don't like Andrew's lightsaber effect. It is good, but it turns out to be little bit of unrealistic or un"StarWars"like. Andrew's Method is very easy to rotoscope but the blade edges are way too round and the glow effects are bit weird. so I decided to use Ryan's method, which is more tricky and more boring rotoscoping, but more nice.

fantastic tutorial mate! but i got an issue. i am trying to do the obscure effect for a second time, and it won't work!?! i have tried creating a new solid and doing it exactly again, i have even tried just copy and pasting my solid and shifting the effect down the time line. still nothing!? whats going on? i'll be posting my awesome results once this gets sorted.
