  • A great version of a great game

  • Nah, the Spectrum version is better. And even the intro music is better.

  • @McGuywer you must be a sadist then lol

  • Augh! It's the evil toilets again!

  • sad, but I dont find many sam videos in youtube...

  • This brings back memories - I designed a level for this game (see the last name on the scrolling credit!). I sold my Sam a couple of years ago to someone in Spain on eBay... hope it went to a good home.

  • I disagree with much that has been written below. I think that this is an excellent version of the game. I believe that the Eugene referenced in the original game is Eugene Evans of Imagine software. Apparently Matthew Smith and Evans knew each other from their time at Bug Byte. Evans ended up at Infinite Ventures in the USA, Smith ended up as missing for several years.

  • I'm pleased you disagree with the people that aren't too sure about the SAM version, I think (well can only assume) that the main thing is the jump from 17 fps to 25 fps looks weird, or harder, but it plays the same, just faster, and that's good in my opinion :)

  • Was a good machine but came out a little late as the 16bit computers were getting more affordable

  • Is it just me or can Miner Willy jump a lot further in this one? Looks a lot easier than the speccy original.

  • It is not bad but it lacks the soul of the original... its simply not Spectrum Manic Miner anymore.... BTW Sam Coupe has no HW sprites and scrolling.... something I don't get for a piece of HW made around 1990.... Sam Coupe ... no thank you...

  • The sam coupe version of manic minor is a bit too polished if you know what i mean, one of the reasons why i love the ZX Spectrum version of Manic Minor was because it was gritty and looked like it was made by a 17 year old in his bed room, oh wait!!! LOL.

I really like the sam coupe tho, its been on my shopping list for about 15 years.

  • I found a sam coupe on a carboot for £1 and sold it for £70 lol such a rare computer now.

  • You What! you got one for a pound? U lucky sod. LOL

Ive been looking for one for ever.

Honestly, good bit of business there, u should of kept it, its worth a mint now. I saw one on Ebay for £250.

  • look out! Killer Toilets!

Shit, i remember those from the CPC version of manic miner. But where the hell is the giant egg man? And sugar factory? Is that a giant ball of suger energy out to get you?

  • I think "Eugine's Lair" was a reference to someone or other back in 1983, though I didn't realise it back then so I don't know why they were worried about it no longer being topical when the Sam Coupe came out. I think it's a shame the Eggman wasn't in this version. It looks like he's been replaced by one of the sprites from the "Wacky Amaebatrons" screen.

  • in modern parlance 'you owned'.

  • Wow, isn't it amazing how putting new graphics and music on makes a game lose its "soul" ??

I much prefer the C64/ Speccy originals.

  • Naa...me kedo con la de la Speccy...

  • Does that mean you like the Speccy version better/more? :)

I think most people will always like the Spectrum version the best *_+

  • The speccy version is more "warm". You don´t know how I missing this game...my ZX+ dies (natural death, I suppose...:( ). I think was the ULA, because when start up, the screen fills with flashing characters and crash...Anyway, I have emulators and PC conversions, but not are the same... :/

  • maybe i should create manic miner on my wrestling game

  • Nice. The atmosphere is really different, on this my fav are Speccy & Amstrad versions.

  • Remember me? Go to Google Video.Change the 0 in c0m to a regular 'o'. I hope you've been well... video.google.c0m/videoplay?docid=-1190598790586254547

  • Tommy-eeee :D Nice to see you around mate *_+ Expect a PM soon, and that multicolour speccy Mario on your link looks just as good now as when conceived, good work there by you and AA :)

  • lolxbox, go to retrospec to get manic miner and jet set willy

  • I /loved/ this game. I wasn't bad at it either.

It was installed on the old computer so I'm going to have to get my dad to dig out his hard copy of it.

    Rock on forever, Manic Miner.

  • yakc - yeah you have a good point there :)

  • something just not quite right about it. the jumping is not right either

  • I don`t dispute you not liking this version, or it not seeming `right` to you :) But perhaps the jumping seeming not right, is due to the 25 fps instead of 17 frames per second? Just a thought

  • eww horrible version !

  • Not really.

  • Yeah, it's really quick. But hey, what happened to Eugene? Why sugar factory?

  • I`m not sure to be honest with you, I know that on other versions sometimes the room names were slightly different, for instance on the Amstrad CPC Eguene`s Lair was known as Eugene Was Here, but why Sugar Factory I know not, I`ll ask the room designer :)

  • Maybe those little boxes are supposed to be sugar cubes :-)

  • lol, perhaps :D I know the guy a little who designed the extra 40 rooms on top of the original Spectrums 20, so I`ll see

if it was him who changed the name of this level, or if it

was the programmer of the SAM Version, and your right, it is a fast version, runs at 25 fps rather than 17 fps :)

  • Got it :)

  • Sugar = Alan Sugar.

Rather more relevant a figure at the time then Eugene... plus of course we couldnt find the blessed Eugene Sprite :)

  • Aha Davey, meant to ask you on the mailing list... nice to see you around :)

  • :D me too

  • Manic Miner.. I LOVE YOU!
